Style | ABV
American Double / Imperial IPA |  10.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round. bottle (1488), on-tap (79), growler (4), nitro-tap (2), cask (1)

Notes:
This oak-aged gentle giant has been gaining popularity over the past few years and is now available year-round.

For Burton Baton, we brew two "threads," or batches, of beer: an English-style old ale and an imperial IPA.

After fementating the beers separately in our stainless tanks, they're transferred and blended together in one of our large oak tanks. Burton Baton sits on the wood for about a month.

When enjoying the Burton Baton, you'll find an awesome blend of the citrus notes from Northwestern hops melding with woody, vanilla notes from the oak. The wood also tends to mellow the 10% ABV of Burton, so tread cautiously!

12oz bottle into a snifter.

Pours a hazy burnt orange with a very thin white head. Not really any head retention but decent lacing.

Aroma is a little weak but does contain hints of dark fruit, caramel, toffee, and some wood. Also some citrus such as orange and grapefruit.

Overripe fruit intially on the taste. This is followed by a little spicyness with cinnamon being noticeable. Wood is present in the background but stays there never really becoming prominent. The beer is sweet throughout with only a light to moderate perceived bitterness. Finish is sweet and sticky.

Overall, I used to like this beer a lot more than I do now. I love wood-aged beers but like so many other Dogfish Head brews, this one seems under attenuated and is quite sweet. It becomes a chore to drink after awhile.

I was a little hesitant to try this beer, although Dogfish Head has never disappointed. Beautiful in color, a mouth-watering smell, and punch to the taste buds, Burton Baton at 10% is extremely flavorful, especially when you get a taste of the oak at the back end. I would definitely put it up there with the 60 Minute.

Poured from a bottle into a perfect pint glass.

This is a solid beer. The smell kinda had a "damn, I don't know about this one" quality. Once I tasted though...love. It was a heavy beer. I could taste the IPA, the oakiness (if that's even a word), maybe some citrus in it too. The alcohol can definitely kick you in the ass though. A few of these and I would be more of a drooling idiot than I am now. All in all: I like it! Buy it, trade for it, whatever. It's worth it.

This is the second time I tried this and it's been about four years since the last time... This time was not good at all. It claims to be an oak aged imperial ipa but the whole flavor is malty alcohol. Perhaps the oak is overpowering the hops but either way it's not what I would want out if something called an imperial IPA. Not many dog fish head that I don't care for but I wouldn't want this one again.

Bottled on 11/28/11 (Opened almost eleven months after bottling.)

A: A slow pour into a standard pint glass resulted in about one-and-a-half fingers of head that was a light khaki color, and foamy and a little clumpy. After just a few moments the head dissipated to a single layer and left some very good lacing as the glass emptied. This head rested on top of a copper colored, reasonably translucent, and slightly cloudy beer.

S: The aroma was fairly mild and consisted of a bready yeast and just a little malty sweetness. It was very much a sweetbread-type of aroma.

T: The taste was very much like the aroma, only much stronger. It began with a rush of honey and caramel malt sweetness, and then some pleasant bready yeast joined in along with some nice graininess. There was also some balancing spicy hops bitterness and just a touch of alcohol warming.

M: The body was just a little to the heavier side of the medium range. Also, it had very little carbonation and was reasonably smooth.

O: This is a really outstanding beer. Like many DFH beers, this one was difficult to classify as any particular style. It is just a good, robustly flavorful beer. As far as style, it seemed to fall somewhere in between a barleywine and a milder DIPA. This beer is definitely worth a try just to experience the robustness of the bready yeast, the malt sweetness, and the graininess. These flavors came together with the just enough hops bitterness to create and explosion of flavors that worked well together.

The beer pours a woodsy amber bordering on golden brown. The body is hazy with a cloud of murk with a slight ruby character to it. The head on this beer is light and fluffy with a slight cream coloring to it, and the lacing is Splotchy and drooping, but nicely splattered.

The beer smells big and grapefruity with pleasant undertones of sweet caramely malts and a cloying alcohol burn sitting below that. The sweetness is a little off-putting but the grapefruit hints are deliciously enticing. The beer tastes wonderfully bitter with an even better malty balancing that leaves this beer kissing my taste buds, with light spicy burning alcohol coming from the high ABV. The beer begins with bitter biting grapefruit and then opens briefly into sweet cloying malt and alcohol, before closing into a superb mixture of malty caramel and bitter grapefruit with light spicy notes from the bread and slight biscuity malts also coming through. This beer is superb, and gives me hope for barrel aged IPA’s. The finish is to die for, and the functions of both the imperial IPA and the English-style old ale. Mouthfeel is mellow and chewy, with lovely jelling feels on the tongue. It leaves the mouth dry with a slight linger of cloying malts and alcohol that’s wonderfully dampened by the bitters from the grapefruit hops. Overall this is a great off centered ale from Dogfish Head, and a superb balancing job. I’m very glad that barrel aged IPA’s work. I’ve heard that there are some great ones out there, and I’ve had some mediocre ones myself that dim the hops far too much, so I’m very happy to have seen one work. Try this beer.

Sniffer
2 weeks old

A: Cloudy kind of a dirty dark copper, orange edges. in color. One finger head. Nice lacing.
S: Oaky, big sweet carmel malts. Reminiscent of a nice bourbon there is also a nice citrus hop aroma. You can smell the booziness as it warms.
T: Oaky bourbon maltiness up front finishes with a nice smooth bitterness.
M: Thick almost syrupy consistency.
D: For 10 ABV this is very drinkable

This DIPA, very different in a good way. I would like to see how this one ages.
Overal: 3.95

Updated: One year old

Thin cap never completly goes away. The nose is similar to fresh. The booziness seems to have faded. Taste is great it all just comes together after a year. Oaky, malty, still slightly bitter. I am pleasantly surprized, I am a Huge Fan Aged!

12 oz bottle into my new Russian River Belgian glass.

Appearance: Beautiful deep copper. Nice off-white head.

Smell: Oaky citrus. Small hint of vanilla. Pine and booze too.

Taste: Hit with pine, lemon/citrus initially, then some grapefruit spice/alcohol. But then I get a very malty backbone. Spicy toffee. This tastes like an exquisite, hoppier, (dare I say better) version of the 90 minute IPA.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with standard carbonation. Despite the hoppy and alcohol spices, it's very drinkable. Leaves a dry grapefruit taste in my mouth, despite feeling resiny and sticky as I drink it.

Overall: An awesome beer from Dogfish that I wish I had tried sooner. Highly recommend this one.

Bottled 3/27/12

Pours hazy burnt orange and eventually clears up. Small head quickly fades to a white-ish layer of film.

More grapefruit hoppiness than i expected..in a good way. Some pine..then big creamy sweetness, some vanilla, caramel.

Taste is pretty mellow after 6 months but still has some bite to match grapefruit notes. Just the right amount of hops to work with the maturing sweetness. Bitterness and a bit of booze at the end.

Big, firm substantial DIPA or whatever you want to call this.

One of the more enjoyable DFH beers in my opinion..Gonna save one for a later date

Appearance is a light, translucent copper with a thin layer of head that dissipates rather quickly, but leaves some nice lacing on the glass anyway. The nose is hoppy without a doubt. Malt flavors are upfront, but this offering is also quite hoppy throughout. The finish is not as hoppy as the best DIPAs out there, but this is clearly a blend of styles, so I don't think that it was designed to be a hop bomb.

BA classifies this offering as DIPA, the bar that was serving this on tap classified it as an Old/Strong Ale. DFH website states that it is a blend of two batches - a DIPA (probably 90 minute) and an Old ale (possibly Olde School).

Whatever it may be classified, it is certainly unique and very, very tasty. This baby is good for sipping as an after dinner treat. The only "problem" is that it is not boozy at all considering the high ABV and the 10% will sneak up quickly if one enjoys it too much.

Appearance is sweet - golden, amber, hazy, nice "walls" of head remain on the outside of the glass. Smell is bitter sweet - maybe a candy or molasses coming through. Taste is like a very strong British bitter - hops are present but well balanced with the extra malt flavor. Like drinking 2 beers at the same time - I go back and forth between the more typical British ESB flavor and then back to caramel and hops. When you see the layers this is a sweet beer but makes you work to find all of these flavors.

A: Clear and a burnt copper in color. Poured out with three fingers of off white head. Some thin, sticky lacing stuck to the sides of the glass.

S: Not a whole lot doing here except for caramel malt and a bit of oak. Dig deep and some orange-like citrus can be found.

T: A perfect mix of citrus and piney hops with the sweetness and woody taste of oak aging.

M: Smooth like an oak ale, but crisp like an IPA. Carbonation is medium, but is soft and tingly. Smooth and creamy.

O: I'm usually an IPA purist, but this is one cool beer. After finding out that this is a mix of two different styled beers that are then oaked together is impressive. It is hoppy like an IPA, but smooth like an oaked ale. It is truly like a 50/50 mix of the two giving it perfect balance.

Poured from bottle ive been sitting on for a while...Im hoping the bit of aging was a good thing.
Crazy hiss when opened...pours a hazy burnt orange with thick foamy head. Huge piney sharp hop aromas and a bit of oak/cedar. Really great oak/wood/cedar hop flavors with a very mellow hop (im really thinking the aging mellowed the hop out). Slight citrus and red ale type flavor. I really like the IPA nose but the citrus-like malty strong ale flavor. Easy drinker especially for the abv and a great DIPA...maybe along th elines of a Triple IPA.

Picked this one up in Las Vegas November of 2011. Poured this one into the perfect pint. Bottled on date of 7/20/11.

Appearance: A nice hazy copper with a thick three finger head. This beer has a creamy white 1/4 cap of persistent bubbles that leave wonderful lacing. Very inviting.

Smell: From a distance, all I smell is oak. As I draw the beer closer, I pick up some brown sugar like sweetness from the malts. Some muted or masked earthy malts to go under the oak.

Taste: Oak also in the taste. This just seems like an oak aged ale, I do not really get any aspect of the 90 minute with which it is blended. I guess I should not be surprised, as I have sat on this bottle for almost a year. The oak in the nose is just so strong. The malts are lush, sweet, and have a caramel taste. The finish a slightly bitter, with an alcoholic smoothness.

Mouthfeel: This one is on the thicker side with a lower amount of carbonation. The body is very smooth and very flavorful.

Overall: I wonder if I popped this one too soon (or way too late). This is an intriguing beer that makes me want to try more and plumb it's depths of flavor. I cannot recommend this one to the uninitiated, it will blow their brains.

T: The taste has a nice oak taste towards the end. I can also find Lots of lemon and lime juice together with orange and grapefruit peel. The alcohol warms at the end. Well balanced.

M: Medium body with strong carbonation.

O: A very fresh IPA with a nice oak flavour. The lemon and lime tastes are sweet, sweet stuff!

I've been drinking this for a few years and, for whatever reasons, I've never reviewed it.

I feel this is one of the best IPAs/Double IPAs out there; it looks great, has a solid head, smells wonderful, has a smooth consistent oaked flavor with no odd quirks as you're raising the glass/bottle for the next gulp. I tried this after a had a few Dogfish 90s and couldn't believe it was that much better than the 90.

I also like the fact I can get all Dogfish beers for slightly under retail at the brewery and, since it's in tax-free Delaware, not pay any taxes on the case or two I get when I'm nearby. Very nice!

A great beer; my favorite right now although I'm still looking around. It's also one of the few beers that my 86-year old father loves; he tasted one I was having and wouldn't give the thing back!

I picked up a bottle of Dogfish Head's Burton Baton last week for $3.89 at The Lager Mill. I passed up on this one last year because I was turned off by the whole oak aged IPA thing, but after hearing more about I decided to grab one next time it came around, so lets see how it goes. No visible bottling date, 2012 vintage. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a snifter.

A- I really like the packaging on this beer, top to bottom it's nicely done and I really like the font. It poured a nice amber color that took on a nice copper tint when held to the light with three fingers worth of creamy light tan head that died down to a thick ring that stayed til the end and left lots of nice lacing. This is a great looking beer, the color is nice and the head is really impressive, this beer has great glass appeal.

S- The aroma starts off with tons of sweet malts that have a high amount of sweetness and impart some nice molasses, toasted bread, brown sugar, and lots of caramel aromas with just a slight bit of vanilla. Next comes a good amount of sweet dark fruits followed by a light amount of alcohol and some light woody aromas. Towards the end comes the hops which stick out nicely and are mainly citrusy with a nice pine resin like aroma right at the end. This beer has a really nice aroma, that is very complex, but the sweetness seems to be just a little overpowering.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma, it starts off the same with lots of sweet malts that have a higher amount of sweetness to them and impart all those nice caramel and toasted bread flavors along with some brown sugar and a little bit of vanilla. Next comes some dark fruits and a slight woody taste which is quickly followed by some nice citrus and piney hops that impart a high amount of medium bitterness that helps balance out all those sweet malts. Towards the end come a little bit of warming alcohol and it had a sweet caramel malt and bitter aftertaste. I liked the flavor of this beer, at first I thought it was too sweet, but then I noticed how nicely the hops and bitterness balance out the sweetness, but I do wish the barrel stuck out a little more.

M- Fairly smooth, sticky, a little warming, on the full side of being medium bodied and it had the perfect amount of medium carbonation. I liked the mouthfeel it worked well with this beer, no complaints.

Overall I thought this was a good beer and I thought it was a good example of an American Strong Ale, it had just enough Old Ale aspects as it had DIPA aspects, it blurred the line between the two and it was what it intended to be. This beer had ok drinkability, it went down fairly smooth for how strong it was, but the sweetness and warming alcohol would prevent me from wanting another, one is just enough, it's a sipper. What I liked most about this beer was the appearance and the complexity in both the aroma and the taste, they were both nice. What I liked least about this beer was that the sweetness got a little out of hand and I would like to have more barrel flavors and aromas in this beer. I might buy this beer again for a special occasion, but at $3.89 a bottle it's pretty expensive and there are many other beers that taste similar for a better price, so I don't think I'll be buying this again anytime soon, but I recommend giving it a try especially if you are into the higher octane stuff. All in all I have to say that Dogfish Head delivered just what I thought they would, another strong and complex beer that's a good once in awhile beer, I enjoyed it and I'm really interested in the idea of blending beers and would like to see some more brewery's experiment with this, good job guys, this is a good beer to sip on.

12oz bottle in Duvel tulip
bottled: 6/8/12

kind of surprised I had never reviewed this before.

A: Crystal clear copper color with a one finger white head, a surprising amount of lace. As the head drops, it never quite disappears, it just fades into a film on the surface.
S: Smells like an old ale, lots of caramel, a little bit of butter. As it warms, the hops start to develop, mostly citrus, but a little pine as well.
T: A nice mix of oak and hops, although there is some hop flavor (pine resin and some dankness makes me think Columbus), it mostly seems to be bittering hops. As it warms, the oak becomes more apparent along with a slight caramel sweetness.
M: The oak is very apparent on the tongue, there is a little bit of dryness/astringency, but it is not unpleasant. Very "creamy" mouthfeel, but not thick, "rich" is probably a better description.
O: I don't buy this often because of the price (~$15/4 pack), but every time I think I should buy this more often. This is a great change of pace for a sipping beer if you are getting tired of only having a RIS.

This pours a beautiful copperish or maybe a nice bronze depending on the lighting. Literally no head but bubbles are noticably flowing upwards when held up to a light. Has a nice medium level scent of oaky sticky hops. Smells very thick, and fairly pleasant. Very thick, and very sweet were the first things that popped into my head immediately upon tasting the beer. Has a very sweet oaky/mapleish taste upfront, becoming very bitter right afterwards, with the sweetness mixing itself with the hops as it slides down your throat.
This one stays very thick and sweet throughout, with a bit of alcohol making itself present on the finish.
Over all this is a pretty damn good beer to sip on right before bed.

A: a deep orange to gold hue, slightly copper. Hazy with a great two finger white head.
S: whiffs of sweet malt and vanilla dominate. Picking up hints of booze and oak. Surprised at the lack of floral and citrus hop aroma.
T: very sweet at the front with the vanilla and malt notes that were present in the aroma. Toward the middle to back, a faint bitterness blends with an oaky booze that takes over. Slightly rustic.
M: Sticky, yet smooth. Medium carbonation. A long, sweet, boozy hang. Perhaps a tad cloying, but nice.
O: fantastic beer. Labeled as a double ipa, this drinks more like a pale ale blended with a barley wine. A fine brew to sip on and savor. Perhaps a little too sweet for the style, but beer is art and interpretation is independent.

A - Two fingers worth of dense rich frothy off white colored head shows starts to fizz away before showing solid retention at one fingers worth... The color is a pale vibrant caramel brown with a amber hue that lies beneath... The carbonation is a mix of sluggish and moderate paced streak throughout... Loads of lacing clings to the sides of the glass... A very nice looking offering...

S - Caramelized brown sugars... A light whiff of vanilla... Some delicate fruity notes... Just a faint hint of the oak aging... Very pleasant, but perhaps a bit understated...

T - Light brown sugar... Fruity notes... Loaded with earthy tones throughout... The hops are present, but take a back seat... A boozy heat radiates... The finish is dominated by a fairly potent mix of oak and booze...

M - On the fuller side of medium bodied... Starts a bit lush... Moderate carbonation... A bit chalky midway through... The finish is a bit dry astringent boozy finish...

D - A very nice beer... A quality sipper... Provides a nice warming feeling... Not something I would necessarily buy a case of, but something that I would gladly drink again when the opportunity presents itself... A very nice way to finish a day...

Didn't really like this one the first time I had it (several years ago), maybe its time for a redo.

A- Poured into a tulip with a dark red body. Creamy white cap forms to about two fingers and fills the glass off nicely. Head retention is quite good and a thick ring remains. Great, thick lace patches all over the place.

S- The big three things in the beer show right away. Big caramel from the Old Ale mixes with fresh oak hints and it is all finished off with some citrus and pine hops (the Double IPA portion). There seems to be a bit of nutty toasted hints as well.

T- Everything somehow changes here. There seems to be a clash between the big caramel, white grapes, pine resin, fresh oak and massive hops (mostly citrus and huge pine) from the Double IPA. None of this is helped by a fair alcohol presence and bitterness. It feels muddled to me.

MF- Thick and creamy body with a nice silky feel. Alcohol warms up the palate quite a bit. Bitterness also hits pretty heavily.

I love strong beers and I love both Old Ales and Double IPAs. Something just doesn't feel right to me here. Alcohol and some roast note seem to take a stand and throw off what allured to me in the aroma. Not terrible by any means but the balance of flavor is off to me and it just doesn't work out. It seems like everything is over the top somehow. Maybe with some age?

12 oz bottle poured moderately aggressive into a tulip glass.

A - Dark amber-copper body with a 2 finger light tan head. The head is taking a good while to settle. The lacing is quite evident of the 10% alcohol content.

S - Oak, vanilla, slight alcohol (not overpowering), earthy malts and dampened hoppiness (surpressed by the thick maltiness)

T - Huge complex maltiness. It has a faint resemblance of bourbon in a way. Very bready and full of a bark-like taste. It is rather sweet on the tip of the tongue, but once the beer rolls to the back and sides of the tongue, there is a much stronger hop presence. When leant over, aerating the beer pulls in a much stronger alcohol bite, that otherwise is very well-balanced.

M - Left with a little aftertaste of alcohol, the finish is rather dry, leaving almost no "hop-burn" lingering. Remaining is a bready smooth caramel slightly sticky sweetness.

O - Overall, an amazing "sipping-beer". This beer was obviously not made for chugging, gulping, or doing keg-stands on. It is extremely complex and multi-dimensional and worth taking the time to analyze it. I plan on sharing a bottle of it with a friend.
