Black black black. well, with the exception of the tan head. it has a beautiful aroma, chocolate, black, and earthy. the taste is where it fell apart for me. the malts that make that great aroma create a bit too much astringency, and even with the high alcohol, the mouthfeel is a bit heavy for me. I don't think it'll take to many of these to slow me down, despite being a good stout.

Picked up a 12 oz bottle from the local beer store

A- Pours a pretty thick dark black color, almost entirely opaque, with just a little light coming through the edges and giving it a beautiful deep red color. One finger of tan head that left some nice lacing.

S- Smell is dominated by coffee and chocolate. Pretty sweet, very nice nose.

T- Good chocolate and coffee flavors. Sweet, but not overwhelmingly so.

M- Really smooth and drinkable. Hardly any presence of alcohol, which makes it dangerous at 8.5% ABV. Medium bodied mouthfeel. I would have no problem downing a few of these.

O- A solid Imperial Stout with some nice nose, tasty flavors, and great mouthfeel. Would make a great session stout, in my opinion.

Pours a dark, dark brown with a thin layer of beige head that dissipates quickly and leaves little lacing. The chocolate and malt flavors blend well. The nose is far too mild, almost non-existent. The roasted bitterness on the finish is the highlight, particularly because it is accompanied by bittersweet chocolate notes.

The whole offering is a touch thin for a double stout, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Appearance is identical to the single version of this brew, brown with some clarity, short head, and significant lacing. Nose is heavier on the roasted malts an dry cocoa notes. Notes of bread come in behind the significant roast. Taste has cereal grain character up front with light chocolate and coffee notes an heavy dry roast. Tastes very light for and imperial and really misses the mark for mouthfeel. Mouthfeel is thin and highly carbonated. A bit of a disappointment in relation to my expectations. There is roast and chocolate but no body or depth.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip glass.

A- Pours a dark brown-black color with some red tones when moved in the light. Rich mocha head, fades fast yet leaves nice lacing.

S-Chocolate, but not 'double' chocolate, dark roasted malts, a hint of coffee in the back. Faint hops.

T- Now the chocolate comes through and blends well with the coffee, some graniness. Earthy.

M- Light roast, thin feel for a stout. The chocolate and hop bitterness keep the alcohol in check so it's quite drinkable.

O- A stout @ 8.1% abv that goes down easy, not bad.

The first thing I noticed was when opening this beer, it was low on smoke, hardly any schmoke floated out of this beer. : -( The view was ok but unimpressive. A dark beer with a decent head. A smidgeon above average. My favorite aspect of this beer though is the aroma. Nice chocolatte aromas arose clearly to my senses. It was like sniffing a nice chocolate bar. Pure chocolatte on the mild side....just like I love my women!

There is a let down in flavors. It was chocolate, simply chocolate and it was lightly sweet. The issue here this does not quite measure up to the few double chocolates that I have had in the past. I mean to compare this beer to Young's Double Chocolate or Rogue's Chocolate Stout, this is nowhere in their league. Thus, the lower score was given. Some might like a milder thinner chocolate dominated flavored beer, then this would be a nice one. This rides more like a an ale than a stout in a way. In that regards, one might enjoy it. It reminds me of the New Belgium's dark ale 1554 Enlightened Black Ale http://beeradvocate.com/beer/user_review/192/1914 which I like to think is pretty good, but this is not a rich thick well bodied smooth chocolate stout.

There is nothing wrong with the texture of the beer. Again I find it a little thin for a stout. Some might even find it a bit watery. This not a bad beer, it just doesn't measure up to my standards.

That's enough on this beer. It is made to go with the music of one of the western United States cool headed nature motivated jazz men from the 60s and 70s. That man is drummer Jerry Grannelli who taught at the Naropa Institute in Boulder, CO. The specific cds to check out is a duet cd with JAY CLAYTON on Sound Songs or Iron Sky with Jeff Reilly smoking in on bass clarinet. I always thought Jerry might have a performance with some of the Oregon guys.

Jerry Grannelli probably does alright. He gets a cut on the lp 'A Charlie Brown Christmas" ... Yes, Jerry was the excellent drummer on Vincent Guaraldi outstanding album for the classic TV special!
