A - A very dark brown body...it doesn't even show the ruby highlights...a light brown head that stands about two fingers...slowly receeds and leaves decent lacing

S - There are some roasted malt notes with a touch of caramel sweetness...not much chocolate action

T - The chocolate and coffee flavor comes out on the palate...the roasted malts really stand out...they never come across as being burnt though...there is again a touch of caramel sweetness...the chocolate and coffee combine in the end to provide a roasted bitterness

M - Medium bodied...thin, not very creamy

D - This was a decent chocolate stout...not much coming off the nose but there are some chocolate flavors...try if you get the chance but there are better chocolate stouts out there

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – Pours a nearly pitch black color with a one finger tan colored head. The head fades relativity fast leaving a moderate level of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is of a heavy roasted malt smell mixed with a sweet chocolate/cocoa aroma as well as some sweeter notes of vanilla and some caramel.

Taste – The taste begins with a roasted malt flavor with some lighter dark chocolate flavors. The flavor is lightly sweet upfront with it growing even slightly sweeter as the flavor advances toward the middle of the taste. The sweeter flavors are mainly of a chocolate and light vanilla flavor but have hints of an almost lighter fruit like sweetness and a bit of caramel mixed within. Toward the end a bit of bitterness comes to the tongue in the form of a more earthy and herbal hop flavor leaving a rather roasted, moderately dry and chocolaty flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel –The body of the beer is on the medium side with a nice smoothness and a carbonation level that is rather average. Both are rather nice for the darker flavors of the brew and make for a fairly nice fuller feel overall.

Overall – A rather nice stout with a good chocolate and roasted malt flavor which still maintains a rather easy drinking character.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.

A nice styrofoam like looking head, three fingers tall with lots of staying power and a light cocoa cream faint tan color, that clumps and hangs. Body is a very dark dark walnut brown, with a good ability to see some fast rising plentiful carbonation if you look closely.

Nose brings a nice powdery whiff of dark chocolate, but it's fleeting and gives way more to a real nice light roasty malt grain. Good husky big thick grain quality, with a nice mixing chocolate angle. Basic, not varied, but simple and solid.

Palate even for a light stout comes off quite wet still, really doesn't coat well. Grainy tasting finish mixing with a light bitterness of chocolate. No sweetness. Roast character is more akin to a light coffee but with no cream action. Good roast quality with a matching chocolate bitterness.

Overall a nice light chocolate stout, not bad, kind of interesting. I could have this again.

This beer pours up a deep black with ruby highlights a nice one finger caramel colored head, decent retention, and a healthy bit of lacing. Nose is chocolate, roasted nuts, and coffee, very nice. Taset is sweet up front with notes of malt and cola. Finish is chocolate, coffee, caramel, and nuts. Mouthfeel is very pleasant. Loved this one.

I love the color of this stout as it seems more radiant than most almost to an opal like finish. A four goes to the color because the body is just weak with loads of bubbles and a thin head.

The scent is nice with dry chocolate highlights, tinges of coffee, light Graham cracker and chalky malt.

The taste is rather uneventful, thin in taste and feel and a touch watery. Roast coffee, dry powdered chocolate and burnt, smoky embers touch the tongue but never really grab you. I feel like there's more to be done here, perhaps an Imperial style to really impress but this is somewhat disappointing.

Pours a dark brown with a little bit of light passage, short tan head, significant lacing. Nose is heavily roasted with mild waves of coffee and cocoa. Taste has an astringent chocolate bitterness with bits of sweetness scattered in. Overall a dry flavor with plenty of roast. Mouthfeel is thin and highly carbonated.

This one happens to be available year round in my area and has become a staple in my beer cabinet. Maybe I'm a little biased on it but I certainly think it deserves a higher rating then I see here. I think it is close to excellent for a chocolate stout. Maybe it is downrated a bit since it has a relatively low ABV for a stout and that's OK, just means I can drink more of them before I fall down...

Poured into my new Christmas Pint Glass

A: Just looks alright, not much head visible. Loses points for me for no ABV on the label.

S: Your standard chocolate stout. Really not overly chocolate but I do like the fact that it isn't artificial smelling.

T: Pretty smooth which I like in my stouts. Bits of chocolate and roastiness here and there but nothing overwhelming.

M: After looking into the abv level this beer gets bonus points. It is really drinkable right now and I think I could knock out a sixer of this pretty easily.

Overall: Pretty much the definition of average for me. Not bad at all but nothing mind blowing here. Grab it if you need an easy stout fix

Pours a deep, dark brown, almost black color with a nice one finger fluffy eggshell colored head, decent retention.

The scent is of roasted malt, sweet chocolate, and some notes of coffee.

The taste is first of dark, roasted malts, some sweet chocolate and some cocoa, slight notes of burnt coffee.

Full body, smooth but a little too crisp for the style.
Overall:

12 oz bottle from Denver during a trip in February of 2012. I poured this beer into my CCB snifter. Did not have a bottled on date.

Appearance: I cannot see through this beer because it is very black. The one finger head settled rather quickly but left a swirly sort or film atop the beer that looks somewhat like a bowling ball :)

Smell: Roasted malts with a hint of bittersweet chocolate with the smallest touch of earth herbal hops. Actually pretty straight-forward.

Taste: The whole taste seems a little thin on flavor. The chocolate and roasted notes are first, followed by an odd metallic sort of taste. A lingering semi-sweetness in the finish.

Mouthfeel: The body is smooth, but all in all feels quite thin. Carbonation is OK.

Overall: Sorry Fort Collins, I would reach for other beers before this one again.

A - Pours a black color with a tan head roughly 1 finger in width that dissipates rather quickly, leaving a decent lacing.

S - Has the aroma of roasted malts with hints of chocolate.

T - The hops are present in this stout, but are balanced out nicely with flavors of chocolate and roasted malts.

M - A crisp, full-bodied beer with medium carbonation; very easy to drink.

O - Not my favorite stout, but nonetheless a good stout. It has an easy drink-ability with great taste.

Enjoyed in a pint glass

A: pours an impenetrable black with three inches of very frothy large bubbled mocha brown head which lingers for quite a nice amount of time before dissipating and leaving a small amount of lacing
S: nice chocolate malt notes and something that, unfortunately, reminds me of a wet dog
T: chocolate malts, kind of chalky like powdered chocolate, bit of an odd sweetness on the tail end
M: slight carbonation tingle, leaves the mouth feeling oddly caked in chalk, not the best
O: ive had this one in the fridge for about 8 months now, given the style i dont think thats too big of a sin but this is not the best beer in the world to say the least, there are many more beers out there of this style that are much easier to get and much more well rounded, appearance was the best part of this brew, the rest was downhill

Bottle was part of a 6pk picked up at Wegmans in Warrington, PA

Poured and enjoyed in a DFH pint glass

A - Pour pours a very dark brown with a beige colored 1-2 finger head. Moderate lacing left after drinking.

S - A roasted malt aroma.

T - The initial sip greets you with a slightly bitter, slighly roasted malt flavor. It's rather creamy even though the beer itself it not what I'd consider heavy. After it warms a bit, a real nice sweetness come through. I don't get a lot of chocolate taste per se, but it is good. The alcohol is barely noticable.

M - Thin to moderate consistency. Light carbonation.

O - I enjoyed this beer. I'm sort of surprised by the lower ratings on this beer as I thought it was quite tasty. An easy drinking, easy sessionable stout. Not the best stout I've ever had but decent none the less. Give it a try!

Cheers!

Poured into a glass mug. Pours dark brown with a miniscule tan head that dissipates quickly. There are aromas of dark roasted barley malts, chocolate, coffee, and some hops. The taste follows the nose. There are dark roasted malts, bitter coffee, bitter chocolate, and bitter hops. It has that charred malt characteristic in the flavor. The carbonation helps chase the bitter aftertaste from the mouth. The body is light with plentiful carbonation. The drinkability is very good. Overall, this is a good beer that is worth a try.

A: Bottle with a fun logo and no freshness or bottle on date, although the guy at the store said it had just come in so... Pours a dark reddish brown with a big creamy tan head that dissipates somewhat quickly. Lots of bubbles.

S: Chocolate, creamy, a little roasty. Somewhat subdued.

T: Sweet, light, some chocolate. Something stale tasting floating around there. I'm a little bit at a loss. It doesn't taste bad per se but there isn't really a lot of complexity here. Very subdued flavors.

M: Sits medium light then the carbonation really starts to make it sour.

Overall an ok beer. There isn't a lot of complexity with the flavor and it sits a little light. I'm usually a fan of stouts but this one is a little disappointing.

a - pours dark brown with a thin cap of tan head that dissipates quick. leaves some thin leggy lacing in the glass.

s - milk chocolate, molasses, faint cola.

t - roasty with dark chocolate and faint burnt malt notes. has an odd mineral or metallic quality, almost like i just sucked on a penny. ample bitterness in the finish.

m - lighter side of medium bodied, adequate carbonation, coarse co2 profile. doesn't feel substantial like a stout should.

o - not bad but nothing to go chase after either. definitely adds another dimension to the style though.

We pour a dark brown brew. It sports a chocolate brown one finger head of big creamy bubbles. Retention is low, and bits of lacing are left around the glass. This is, however, nicely reproducible with a hearty swirl of the glass. No sediment is noted, and carbonation appears average. The nose sings of roasty chocolate malts and steely coffee. Hop balance and bitterness comes in the form of florals and grass. There is cooling sweetness of vanilla spice and syrup soaked strawberries. Band-Aid phenols seep out a bit with warmth. Our first impression is that this is pretty mild, but that the malts have a nice roast. As we sip, dirty coffee, steel, and bittering grass come through. The malts quickly take on a deep chocolate and char, which really cuts all other flavoring away. There is no real sweetness to the peak, but rather we get hit with a more soothing roasty malt, mixed with medicinal bitters. These, too, quickly wash away, leaving simple watered down chocolate malts, chalk, and a dusty basement muskiness. The aftertaste breathes bitterly, of roasty malts, plastics, musk, and a faint herbal hop. The body is thinner, and the carbonation is medium. The feel is way too thin at times, and the mouth is left wet and unsatisfied. There is a nice slurp and cream, but little else to each sip. The abv is appropriate, and the beer drinks cleanly.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was the richness to the malts. These were, however, hard to find at times. They come strong at the start, and give great flavoring, char and roast, but by the end everything is washed with thinness and water, diluting the original strength. Additionally, the coloring is nice, and the head and bubbles upon swirling produced an attractive beer, but the follow through on the sip and the feel fell a little short for us.

Pours a pretty nice mostly complete black color, with a dark tan colored head. Looks pretty good.

The aroma is mostly roasted malts, with some light chocolate notes.

The taste is of dry, roasted malts with touches of sweetness and an even dryer chocolate powder kind of taste. Again, pretty average.

The feel has a little creaminess to it, with a mostly medium body. Carbonation is fine.

Overall, it's just an average sort of stout. They don't use actual chocolate, just chocolate malt. It's kind of a rip off to call it a chocolate stout when they only the malts (which is pretty standard for a stout malt bill anyway) and not chocolate...especially when it's pretty weak too.

Appearance: Virtually black, with a brownish tint. Pours a thick and creamy chocolaty head.

Aroma: Bitter dark chocolate, nice change from the sweetness of some beers of this type.

Taste: Pretty standard chocolate stout, with hints of roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Not sweet, more like bitter. I prefer this flavour profile to the sweet type of chocolate stout.

Mouthfeel: Quite light for the style, light to medium bodied.

Overall: Lighter than some of its counterparts, which is nice because sometimes you might want a chocolate stout without an insane ABV and richness/sweetness. A nice beer.

Single brown bottle, from a Make-Your-Own 6 pack I got in Denver.
From the label: "Sweet is Subjective. A velvety smooth mouthfeel and impeccable flavor make this stout positively seductive. Subtle hop bitterness evens out the character of roasted barley and chocolate malt. Our stout is a proven classic."
Pours dark, almost black, completely opaque when held up to the light. Leaves a short layer of light tan foam, nice looking sticky lacing.
Smells of dark chocolate, coffee. A bit of earthy, herbal hops but more on the sweet side.
Taste is full of roasted malts. Coffee, bitter chocolate, and burnt sugar. Mouthfeel and body are lighter than expected for a stout. Also not as creamy smooth as expected, lots of carbonation bubbles.
Overall, this was a good beer, but not a great one. No one element stuck out, but still very drinkable.

Thanks to Ryan Montgomery for passing this one along.

This pours black with a small khaki head that leaves decent lace on the way down. On the nose is dry cocoa powder hanging with some roasted malts. In the mouth the roasted malt takes over and the chocolate mainly shows up in a short finish. The body is quite light, drinkable but definitely lacking in heft, with a pretty vigorous carbonation perhaps a bit too much.

Overall, this is a decent chocolate stout, though I prefer their doubled version of it.

Very dark, almost black, except for velvety walnut brown highlights when held to the light. The head is dark almond and fleeting, leaving little lace, but does leave a film on the glass with each swirl.

Rich, roasted malt and coffee is followed by unsweetened chocolate. The exquisite simplicity of the aroma requires warmth to shine as some pine resin makes a nice contrast.

There is a good dose of bitter, black coffee with baker’s chocolate. This is followed by some measure of pine sap and hops. All in all, for a stout, this one is fairly clean. There is a chocolate/coffee confection as well.

Chocolate Stout has a medium body, is dry and more carbonated than most stouts. It has a velvet texture and modest astringency.

A good drinking beer from a pint glass, this is better for social occasions and would easily mix well with bar food. Check the brewery’s website for their great Chocolate Stout chili recipe.

I picked up a bottle of Fort Collins Chocolate Stout last week for $1.89 at The Lager Mill. I was looking to try a beer from a new a brewery to me and since I have not a had a beer from Fort Collins before I figured I should take a chance on their Chocolate Stout, so lets see how it goes. No visible bottling date. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a imperial pint glass.

A- The label look Ok, but it isn't that eye catching. It poured a dark brown color that had ruby red tint when held to the light and it had two fingers worth of tan head that died down to a thin layer that stayed till the end and left a little spotty lacing. This Stout doesn't look too bad.

S- The aroma is pretty rich and roasty. It starts off with loads of dark roasted malts that have a lower amount of sweetness and imparts some bready and roasted malt aromas along with a little bit of coffee, Next comes the chocolate which is closer to dark chocolate then milk chocolate. The aroma is ok, and it has enough chocolate aromas to live up to the name.

T- The taste is similar to the aroma just not as robust. It starts out with some dark roasted malts that are low on sweetness and impart a grainy, bready, coffee and roasted flavors. The dark chocolate shows up but it's not bold enough for me to pick it out as the showcase of this beer. There is a little bit of bitterness at the end with a roasty and grainy aftertaste. The flavors was a little lackluster, this is a pretty average tasting Stout.

M- Smooth, slightly dry, on the light side of being medium bodied, and it had a nice amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel was ok but it felt a little watery to me.

Overall I wasn't too impressed with this beer and I thought that it was a pretty average American Stout. This beer was called a Chocolate Stout, but I don't think there was enough chocolate presence to make this stick out from just a regular American Stout. This beer went down smooth but the flavor didn't really hold my interest so I don't think I would want another one. What I liked most about this beer was the appearance, it looked pretty proper for an American Stout. What I liked least about this beer was the lack of chocolate taste and the watery mouthfeel, if those were fixed this beer wouldn't be half bad. I wouldn't buy this beer again and wouldn't recommend it, their are much better Chocolate Stouts to be found. This beer really didn't do it for me and it didn't make for a good first impression for this brewery, I would like to have a couple more beers from them before I fully form an opinion on this brewery, but after having this beer I won't be in a hurry to try their other beers, hopefully they are better then this one, better luck next time guys.
