[Suggested Glassware: Dimpled Mug]

The pour was a clear medium brown with a reddish hue and an average (1-2 finger) light tan frothy head that slowly receded, down to a puddled film with a medium collar and had good sticky lacing.

The aroma was of sweet bread malts and a doughy yeast with notes of toffee, dark fruit (raisons) and a healthy nutty scent.

The taste was extremely malty with a bold toffee sweetness along with a hint of dark fruit from the get go, progressing slightly with a mild bitterness and a smooth bitter nutty ending. The flavor was average in duration with the nutty bitter taste left behind to linger on the taste buds.

Mouthfeel was between light and medium in body with a dry, oily texture and a carbonation that was a little more than mild in intensity.

Overall this was a malty sweet brew with a bold taste of toffee and a nice nutty ending...

Fort Collins Oak-Aged Maibock. Served on tap at Taco Mac Decatur on 4/25/12. Reviewed from notes.

$5.50 for 11oz.

(Appearance) Color is a deep orange color with a little haziness, and a light white surface cover, beer looks smooth and slick. Appearance is good overall, if not underwhelming. 3.5

(Smell) Mild wood tones over dark caramel and German malts makes this a malt heavy beer with a touch of sweet malt aroma. Potency is very low. Decent. 3

(Taste) Sweet toasted german malts and a hint of toffee with a distinct fruity wood finish. Avoids being too sweet but comes close, oak aged tones are also low in presence here but somewhat noticeable. Flavors are pleasant and approachable, but not overly exciting. An overall pleasant drink. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) Flat? It has a very slick texture, almost no carbonation to be found in the beer. It could use a boost in the department. Alcohol presence is medium, body is medium/low. Oak doesnt offer much flavor but does leave the palate very dry. Sub-par texture doesn't really give the flavor any more life, and it needs some badly. 2

(Overall) This oak-aged Maibock is on the sweet side of things but may be fitting for a small minority of drinkers. There's not much excitement in the flavor and texture of the beer and the sweetness may be cloying to some, like drinking a light syrup. Overall it's a decent bock but not something I'd seek out again nor recommend at any higher price. 3

Pours a somewhat translucent brown color with orange highlights when held to a light. Small antique white head that fades fast. Minimal lacing.

Good strong malty aroma. Both sweet caramel malt and bready malt.

Tastes pretty good as well. Primarily bready malt with some caramel sweetness as well. A bit of balancing hops bitterness is present as well.

Mouthfeel is smooth, not as rich as some. Much less alcohol presence than some Maibocks, which is not a bad thing.

Overall a good sipping beer. I drank the whole bottle between dinner and a Knick game. Very enjoyable!!!

im not a bock guy, and im loving this one. pours a clean mahogonay color with a foamy tan head. smells like a barleywine at first, but some german malts happening and a molasses sweetness. flavor is a grassy springtime vibe meeting an octoberfest head on. malty and full of seasonal life. i am impressed with the complexity here, not as sweet as the nose, just a touch in the finish. a little boozy as well in the finish. mouthfeel is suitable to the beer, medium to fuller bodied and long lasting at the end. this beer went exceptionally well with fresh ground lamb burgers, packed with red onion, fresh garlic, fresh rosemary, salt, black pepper, and chilli, grilled medium rare with a double slice of swiss cheese and pine nuts, a dollop of whole grain french mustard on dutch crunch bread. bomb! a nice mixing of the seasons

Appearance - A nice auburn color... the head is thin but reveals much lacing after a few gulps.

Smell - The aroma is a preview of how malty and sugary this brew is...

Taste - Very sweet - notes of figs, dark cherries, caramels, and hard candy. Stops short of being cloying though...

Mouth feel - very bready, and full-bodied, yet does not coat the mouth in any sort of sticky fashion.

Overall - everything seems in line with the way the style should be. Compares favorably to the couple other examples I have had. I would say my major criticism is that it could use more of a pronounced hop presence.

Bomber into tall pilsner
A – A clear reddish deep copper color with a large off white head, scattered decent lacing on pour recedes to a lumpy pillow, good lacing while finishing the bottle 4
S – Malty, milder herbals, with dark bread sweetness 3.5
T – Lots of toasted malts, caramel, a nice grassy bitterness, mild notes of chocolate & vanilla. Long finish/aftertaste is bready & sweet 3.5
M – Moderate body with a large rich mouth feel that is very smooth and carbonation is spot on 4.5
O – Nicely drinkable and good tasting but not a personal favorite, glad I tried it and I need to drink more of the style before coming back to this 3.5

22 oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into a Gouden Carolus goblet in high altitude Castle Rock, Colorado.

A: Semitransparent textbook amber colour. Pours a one finger head of decent cream, real nice thickness, and good retention for the above average ABV.

Sm: Heavy malts, the best of which are toasted. Cherry fruit esters are really brilliant, fresh, and wonderful. Lovely caramelized malts. A great aroma, and a pretty strong one as well.

T: Heavy cherry, especially towards the finish. Light toasted malts are backgrounded. The foundation is comprised of unobtrusive malts. Nicely balanced, though the cherry ventures towards syrupy in the third act. Well buillt. There's not a whole lot of layering, but there an't a whole lot of hops. I do like it, though it's a bit too sweet.

Mf: Smooth and wet, but approaching syrupy in its latter phases. I'm not saying it should be thinner, but some ingredient feels wrong consistency-wise. The mouthfeel doesn't intrude and allows the good flavours to come through.

Dr: If they really worked on this, this could be a fantastic beer. I think they used puree for the cherries; real cherries would be much better. Also, aging in cherry wood would be an excellent idea. Quite drinkable and with some good flavours. The above average alcohol never comes through.

1 pint 6 fl oz bottle served in a whiskey sampler, reviewed live:

A - Pours a transparent amber/red color with a soapy off-white head of two fingers. The retention is decent and it leaves a nice lacing as it recedes.

S - Heavy caramel malt and cherry nose, with subtle floral and citric hops notes. Better than expected.

T - Caramel, sweet candy, cherry meddle as they finish a bit bitter. Fruity yeast esters play throughout. A bit sweet and a bit watery, but built really well overall.

M - really smooth and really wet. Medium bodied. Could stand a bit more carbonation.

D - I'd have this one again. It could stand to be a bit more balanced (read bitterness), but it's a good example overall.

Deep brown pour with light orange notes. Hazy. Fleeting 2-finger dark cream head. Zero retention and no lace.

Big bread-and-fruit nose. Bread dominates, but there are dark fruits underneath - plum, raisin, and fig.

Big malt bomb. Bread carries over to the tongue, as do lighter notes of the aforementioned fruit. Lots of caramel malt, especially as the glass warms. Light butterscotch underneath, but doesn't detract.

Feel is thick, sweet, and syrupy. Coats the tongue.

Overall, heavy for the style. Alcohol is light, but present.

Appearance: Beautiful ruby-amber color with a thin lacing.

Smell: Lighter, malty, sweet caramel.

Taste & Mouthfeel: Sweet malts. Rustic flavor in the middle part with some slight hops near the end, which reminds me of a red ale. Has a bready, sweet flavor that is almost too much.

Overall: Solid beer with a great flavor.

Pours a copper honey color with a rich, thick creamy head, nice retention but it fades fast. Leaves sticky lace walls.

The aroma is of toasted malts, bready, toffee and caramel and honey tones with vanilla notes and hazelnut hints.

Candy-like sweet and malty, full of honey and rich caramel, toffee, cream, and toast. Hints of hazelnut, vanilla, and a touch of alcohol burn.

Slight pleasant burn with a rich, thick, syrupy, slickness on a medium body. Creamy and smooth.

Overall an excellent beer.

Bomber split between my friend & I and poured agressively into two pint glasses.

This maibock pours a semi transluscent toffee amber color with a two finger off white fluff head that takes a minute to receed. Not a bad looking brew, nothing seductive here though.

Smell is beautiful! Roasty caramel malts & toffee cream. Very candy like sweetness in the nose. Delicious.

The taste was a let down though after such a nice aroma. All those flavors I picked up in the nose were muted. I wondered if I had served it too cold (I served at roughly 45 degrees), so I let it warm up for about 10 minutes. Flavor profile did not improve any - anticlimatic.

The feel was descent, just a bit too thin for my preference. It was carbonated well, clean & crisp - but I was expecting a bit more thickness to compliment the toffee caramel flavors.

Got this bomber at Total Wine & More for $6.99.

Draft at Freshcraft in Denver, CO.

Pours a dark golden copper/chestnut brown color with golden orange/mahogany edges and a one finger off white head that slowly fades into a lasting ring. Spots of soapy lacing left behind.

Sweet toasted malt aroma with hints of caramel, biscuit and hazelnut. There s a faint earthy hop presence but not much else.

Medium bodied with a nice balance of earthy hops, subtle spice and sweet malt. Hints of cinnamon and brown sugar as well as some caramel, nut, biscuit and toffee. Slightly toasted but not burnt, just enough to add complexity. decently balanced and easy to drink. Not bad.

Poured into a wide mouth chalice. Bright copper/amber hue with a decent head that dissipates quickly. The aroma is of yeasty/bready/malts. The flavor is SWEET malt, caramel, even a burnt grain taste evolves. There is a little bit of hop presence, but like it should does not interfere with the malt. The body is big full malt bomb. not sure of the alcohol, but if I were to guess I would say around 6% (the site here says 6.3%, but not on the label in FL). The alcohol is well hidden. Not my favorite for the style.
