On tap at Little Bear in Los Angeles, CA.
Pours a clear dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark fruits, plum wine, and alcohol. Taste is much the same with some pomegranate and dark roasted malt flavors on the finish. There is a mild roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a low level of carbonation with an almost flat mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty average beer that is quite disappointing coming from Dupont.

Pour is opaque black with a thin tan colored head. The nose is nice, dry and roasted malt, notes of coffee and light chocolate, with a light hop balance. The taste is equally as nice. Very roasty with notes of coffee. Some sweet hop profile in the finish balances. Creamy and soft body with strong carbonation and a dry finish. Deep roasted malt profile and nice balance.

At the Merry Monk (Albany, NY)...
A - Looks like guiness but less clean, dark body and a nice tannish fluffy head.
S - Nothing there some roast and coffee.
T - Not bad, roasty with chocolate and coffee notes. An earthy finish from the Belgium yeast.
M - Not as big as the appearance, a bit light in the body for the head but increases drinkablity.
O - Good beer, with some eclectic combinations could have a few in one sitting.

served on tap in a thin glass.
appears opaque black in color, with cream colored head. good head retention. mild dry roasty aroma. taste is similar, with thin body, lower carbonation. I would like some more body.
overall - reminded me of a dry Irish stout.

Beer on draft at Churchkey in DC, served in a snifter. Beer is black with a thin lazy off white almost brown head of small bubbles, low carbonation and the head retention is low. It breaks quickly and pulls to the edges of the beer at the glass interface, leaving sparse lacing on the glass.
Aroma is mild, yeasty, a little roasty.
Beer is super thin and a little bitter, not much going on here, it is drinkable but unremarkable, not a repeat.

On tap at Churchkey. Served in a snifter. Reviewed from notes.
Pours nearly black without any real head formation or lace. A good swirl brings a few mocha bubbles, but that's about it. The nose brings some nice roasted chocolate character with some slight Belgian-yeast aromatics. The flavor falls back with heavy roast; the chocolate and yeast are merely background noise. Medium body with a semi-dry finish that is a bit acrid. Decent.

Black pour, but not inky black.
Very mild in aroma - some light roast way in the back and some tart notes.
Not even a stout as we would understand it - very little roasty/coffee/chocolate flavor but more of a very clean, dry, light bodied affair with mildy tart, tangy notes.
Is this like a Saison Dupont/ Guinness black and tan?
Hehe, maybe.

Draft at Monk's Cafe in Philadelphia.
Pours a very dark chestnut brown color that's black in the glass with a half finger beige head that slowly settles into lasting ring. Spotty lacing left behind.
Roasted malt aroma with faint earthy hops and estery dark fruits. Hints of dark chcolate, pepper and coffee countered by plum, raisin and other dark fruits.
Thin bodied and watery with lots of tight carbonation(slight oxidization) that lingers throughout making it tough to drink. Some roasted chocolate malt but its very dry and flavorless with subtle metallic and cardboard. Really unpleasant to drink. I was told by two different bartenders and another BA that this is the way the beer tasted. Not infected, just not very good. I'm not so sure but either way it tastes pretty awful.

On Tap at Teresa's Next Door.
Dupont's Stout pours in the tulip black creating a dark black look in the vessel. That takes care of that. A dense like cream colored inch of foam up top with good retention, yet no stick. Smell is english yeast up to the max. Interesting to see a Belgian brewery take on this style. More smells- peat, smoke, chocolate, vanilla and cream. Taste is pretty much stated above in the taste portion. The english ingredients take hold alot. Cocco, vanilla, cream and peat influence. Feel is light bodied with tight carb that's not bitey, yet there is a sourness towards the end which kills it. I like this low alcohol and light bodied stout, but it tastes a bit disjointed and the aftertaste is horrid.

On-tap at Beachwood BBQ,
A: Pours a dark brown to black with a medium tan head, nice retention and lace.
S: Chocolate and mocha, nice full notes of malt, hint of molasses.
T: Thin bittersweet chocolate, some brown sugar and a hint of mission fig. Not a bad flavour, but not expansive, a disappointment with the promise of the nose.
M: Medium-bodied, pretty smooth, creanmy, soft carbonation.
O: I love Dupont, Saison Dupont is a modern classic, and they make a lot of good beer. I loved the new witbier I recently had from them. This just isn't that good. Bland and uninspiring unfortunately.

SF Toronado. Served in a tulip, midnight black, zero transparency, mocha colored head, little lacing.
Aroma is underwhelming, no sense of the dynamic Dupont yeast. A little charred bittersweet chocolate. Bland.
Massive disappointment the flavor is. This is a bland english stout indeed and no more. Zero adventure. The massive disappointment is with Dupont, their imprint is no where to be found. Nothing of note. In light of this mediocrity the cost is absurd.
I am a believer in Brasserie Dupont.

(Am finally getting around to posting my notes taken on the spot at a winter-beer festival in Brussels last December. The festival billed as the debut of the beer; perhaps it had more than one. And what was presented might have been more of a preview, as I gathered from later speaking with someone at Dupont, possibly it was not the final recipe for the commercial run. When I find it again in good tasting environment, I'll re-review. For what it's worth, here goes:) Poured from the keg perfectly black with just a ring of ivory foam. Aroma of coffee, pepper, some herbal spice like coriander, a toasty or caramelized bread note. Surprisingly little malt sweetness, rather burnt-tasting, rather un-Belgian but very welcome. Some coriander or grain of paradise in there, too, and hops sneaks in at the end. Slight astringency, definitely less chewy than the standard Belgian take on stout -- again, not necessarily a bad thing, and all the more quaffable for it.

P: Almost pitch black body with a tan micro bubble head.
S: Sweet milk chocolate, molasses, fig pudding, burnt barley and fruit roll ups.
T/M: Chocolate, stale coffee, and sweet dark fruit jam. Oddly present tartness, cherry cola, burnt molasses, burnt barley and finishes dry with long lingering cigar smoke coverage. Body is more light and carbonated than expected.
O: Tartness is really throwing this off. The aroma is very nice and well blended. I could smell this for hours. For the price tag this is not something I would ever purchase again but I enjoyed the experience.

Beer is black, perhaps with some dark brown hints. Small tan head on top. Good retention.
Smell contains roast malt, coffee. A bit of a dark fruit scent, but not anything in particular.
Taste is very thin. Some roast malt, a bit of coffee. Relatively bitter. Again, a slight bit of dark fruit, almost grape in flavour. A bit astringent.
Quite light in body, moderately carbonated. A thin beer.
Overall, not what I would expect from Dupont. An OK stout, nothing exciting but quite drinkable.

Bottle from the Dupont LCBO feature, and the weakest though most unique offering.. Body looks like a nitro black. Faint roastiness, more molasses taste. A weaker stout for sure. So-so drinkability, and dare I say a little thin.A little bitter but not interesting.Watered down coffee substitute.

330ml Bottle from the Ottawa LCBO for $3
Appearance - Dark brown colour with an average size fizzy/frothy beige head. I can't make out the amount of carbonation showing and there isn't much lacing. The head lasted for 3-4 minutes before it was gone.
Smell - Malts, chocolate, grains
Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, chocolate, and coffee. There are also some smokey/burnt notes and a bit of a nuttiness. It ends with a chocolatey/watery aftertaste with a lingering roasted coffee bitterness.
Overall - Not really a stout.. Maybe more like a Schwarzbier. Anyways, I expected more from this brewer. Still decent, just needs more flavour and less of a watery feel.

A: BLACK, can't see any hues through it. Nice thick head that is off white and then settles to a thin film and a nice rim around the glass.
S: Coffee, chocolate, black cherries, some sour notes.
T: Some sourness present, strong coffee in the back of the pallet, smoky chocolate, cherries again.
M: Well carbonated for a "belgian stout". Medium-full body.
O: I just love the flavours of this beer. Some belgian notes are well present.

Poured into a Leffe goblet. Dark caramel chocolate in colour, with about a half inch of fluffy head that settles into a very thin ring. Some not overly pleasant flakes of sediment swirl around the glass before finally settling. Not the most attractive brew out there.
Nose isn't bad - dry roasted grain, a bit of fruit - cherry or strawberry - with a mild sweetness and a hint of Belgian yeast. Smells like a Belgian dark ale, which is more or less what I had expected.
But boy does it not taste like one. Extremely dry, tart, almost citric, which utterly dominates the brew, leaving little else for the taste buds to detect. It was okay for the first few sips or so, but man the finish really drags on. Very, very dry with a Belgian yeast component. Mouthfeel is certainly of the Belgian variety, and is lighter bodied and a bit slick.
It was intended to be a British-Belgian stout hybrid (I think), but the end result was certainly far less than the sum of its parts. Not a fan of this brew at all, which is a shame, as I was really looking forward to this. Don't think I'll be drinking this again.

Brownish ruby body, ring of tan head, not much lace to speak of. A bit of roast, smokey with some darker fruits, fairly odd smelling, yeasty and a lingering note of plastic that seems to persist. Taste has a bit of smoke and charred/ashy flavours as well, dark fruits with a bit of an odd bitterness as well here. High carbonation, light bodied, below average feel for a stout. Really quite unimpressive, not quite a stout and not quite a dark belgian, too many odd smells and flavours to make this enjoyable.

Bottled stamped 08/2014.
(4.0) A: Pitch black with a crimson edge. A bubbly mocha coloured head that lingers for a while and clings to the glass well.
(4.0) S: Quite a strong aroma as I could smell this when it opened. Dark cocoa powder, darker fruits (plums, raisins, fig), and quite a bit of smoke. Definitely belgian-y.
(3.5) T: A slightly odd tart lemon-lime pie controls the taste with some roasted malt notes which follow. Smokey finish. Lightly bitter with equal dryness.
(3.5) M: Light bodied with a higher carbonation. Fairly thin with a bit of slickness.
(3.5) D: Was pretty pumped to try this as part of the Dupont LCBO release but I don’t think I will be revisiting this one. Appearance and aroma were nice but the taste was too sour for my stouts and mouthfeel left a bit to be desired.

Dupont release at the LCBO.
Decent price, didn't see the ratings before buying... fingers crossed.
Dark brown, almost black pour with a fizzy, short lived light tan head. Lacing is minimal.
Some chocolate and coffee, a touch of soda and some dark stone fruits. Sweet biscuits and brown sugar. There is a touch of smoke in the back end.
Dark roasted malts, sweet biscuits, slight metallic taste with something that resembles peanuts.
Light body, high carbonation.
This wasn't terrible, but it wasn't fantastic. This had flavors and aromas that I never imagined or thought would ever go in a bottle. I guess I have some learning still to do.

750 ml caged and corked bottle. Cork says 2011 on it, so I assume it was bottled sometime last year. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with a huge 3 inch head. This one foamed up pretty much as soon as I started the pour, and it took a while for the head to recede so I could get a somewhat full glass. There's a good amount of lacing. Aroma is nice but light, it smells like roasted malt, coffee, bittersweet chocolate and some dark fruit. The brew tastes like roasted and burnt/charred malt, coffee, bitter herbs, and a bit of tart dark fruit. I liked the taste of this the longer I drank it. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it's smooth and has high carbonation. I thought this was a decent enough brew, I liked it.

330ml bottle served in a tulip glass.
A: Pours a deep black color forming a big dark beige to gray bubbled head. Good retention and only few lacings formed and left. However, a very thin layer remains for long on the top
S: Very strong on roasted malts. Notes of dark chocolate and coffee. Milky and sweet too. Very "Stout", I mean, reminds Guinness in the nose. Some bready Belgian yeasts that break a bit the main English character. Light flowery hops in the end
T: Slightly sweet and roasted malts upfront which turns quickly into a dry and mild bitter in the tongue. Notes of dark chocolate, milk, coffee and brown bread. Belgian yeasts. Finish is mainly made of roasted bitterness and some hops. Not bad
M: Light to medium body. A bit creamy. Good carbonation. Aftertaste is bitter and full of roasted malts
O: Easy drinking beer but, at the same time, not very attractive. A British style beer made in Belgian. That's perhaps the most interesting point about this beer

This bottle poured a monster head.
Color is a nice dark walnut.
Has a slight bucolic like nose- yeast, flowery--
The flavor is obscured by a fairly tangy mouthfeel.
flavor is thin w/o much character or something that make's this beer memorable.
There are hops bitterness, a dash of toasted malt, but for this beer to wear the badge of "stout"-- even Belgian style is a bit of a stretch.
One thing I do like is the somewhat lower ABV. I can put down two pints w/o being welded to my chair seat.
Overall it's OK but not memorable, nor a beer I'll hunt for-- lots of others out there...
