a classic character that hit every good quality of a saison in one form or another. very middle of the road in possible flavors... from the very musty farm herbal to the very fruity spice. nose is funk, and belgian yeast. nice traditional look of straw murky... even from a tap. palate of very delicate sweet with floral qualities. some citrus that transforms with the help of the must into something bitter dry. but mild. anise, and lavender... the bitterness of grass. the sweetness of roses... the must of hot straw in the barn. great. a must.

Initial impression: picture-perfect Belgian. Appearance was a cloudy yellow-gold. No head, no lacing, but that was probably due to the pour.

Smell was hard to define--brassy, earthy (but not grassy), and spicy. Tasted almost like a pilsner on the first sip (malt upfront, hops in the back), spicy, hoppy, and sharp. Evaporated off the tongue quickly, leaving a refreshing and bitter aftertaste.

Excellent beer.

Presentation: 16oz pint, on tap at Ragtag Cinema, in Columbia, MO

Appearance: Hazy dark golden beer with hints of orange; lots of steady, streaming carbonation and a thick, ultra-creamy white head which is slow to fade and leaves some sticky Belgian lace. Just about perfect looking saison.

Smell: Vibrant! Huge hints of fruity bubblegum, spice, and other estery/yeasty goodness I'm having trouble identifying. Something phenolic in here, almost like a solvent, but yet pleasant. I know that sounds goofy, but this is crazy complex and quite nice.

Taste: Tons of somewhat slightly bitter lemon, spicy, medium-bitter herbal/grassy hops, green grass, hints of solventy phenols, some bitter orange, and just a hint of bone-dry malt. Quenching, dry, fairly hoppy, but not over the top. Beautiful summer beer.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, maybe light side of medium

Drinkability: High, especially considering the ridiculously hot weather we're currently having.

Conclusion: So glad to have finally gotten to try this. This and Hennepin are the two best saisons I've ever had. Which is better? I'd have to try them side by side I think.

A tulip served at TJ's in Paoli.

A: The saison is a hazy golden yellow, nestled underneath a full finger of dense white head. It is a little too full to be translucent.

S: A musty saison, the ale can't hide from its Belgian yeast side. Anise, light funk and pepper run wild.

T: Moreso than American saisons, this one relies on the its yeast to carry the taste. Luckily it is up to the task. Anise, tart fruits, sweet pear-like fruits and mild earthy hops define the flavor. The ale is very accessible, far earthier than many saisons.

M: The saison is fruity but assertive, a strong beer that isn't afraid of its delicate side. What? That isn't really informative? Well it sure sounds nice.

D: I need to drink this beer more often, it's a very solid saison.

A very bright beer. In looks, taste and feel.
Pours a slightly hazy, bright light gold with a 2 finger head. Clears up a bit as it sits. Lacing is nice and clean, not sticky.
Tight aroma, a tad weak. Spicy, bready, light. The light biscuit is present, sprinkled with coriander, orange zest, white pepper.

Taste follows the nose. Biscuit, spice, zest and dash of floral. It's quite a refreshing taste. I had it after a big meal, and it fit well.

Feel is just about perfect. Crisp and clean, spicy and smooth. I think a bit more carbonation would make it perfect, but this is just fine as is.

Great drinking. Didn't last long.

Appearance: Good carbonation. Very active beer. Cloudy and straw yellow. Lots of foam. Great lacing effect.

Smell: Doesn't smell particularly strong to me. I don't get any distinct smells other than a strong presence of yeast. This stuff smell very earthy.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Wonderful! Pretty thick despite the light color. Lots of pepper and honey with some lemon hops in the background. Great spicy/sweet ratio. The yeast comes through and makes this decently malty as well. I definitely enjoyed sipping this, because the alcohol is really evident. The finish gives off a nice whiskey-like burn. Excellent.

Drinkability: A true sipper in my opinion due to strong taste.

Overall: If you told me that Saison Dupon had been bootlegged I'd probably believe you. It doesn't have much alcohol, but it packs a punch.

Saison Dupont, on tap

A Small tight bubbles in the head. Thick on initial pour, but decreased with time and left a nice lace on the glass. The head covered the beer all the way to the end. Looks like a hefe, only not as thick. It is golden in color, very similar to a Czech pils.

S fruity and banana aroma, estery. I don't really smell any hops. No phenolics. It has a complex aroma that is hard to dissect. I will attribute that to the yeast, very pleasant.

T Nice malty flavor, has lots of flavor from the yeast. A little bite from the carbonation. Hops are more noticeable here than in the aroma. Good balance finishes clean.

M Medium to full body that is a little deceiving from the color. Though it is relatively high in alcohol (6.5abv), you can't really feel any dryness or tell while drinking.

O a great drinking beer, it is as refreshing as a German wheat beer but with more snap and bite. My favorite Saison, and the only one I can find on tap.

Had this one on tap at Dirty Franks in Columbus, Ohio.
A: Pale golden with a white collar and film.
S: Yeasty bread, strawberry farmhouse, spicy apricots, all in front of a honey apple sweetness.
T: Sweet rustic citrus and apple honey and strawberry. There is a lingering grassy bitterness.
M: Slightly syrupy, it ends dry and frothy.
D: Pretty good. About average for a saison.

Review from notes taken 3/24/10

On tap at Al's served in a classy little saison dupont glass. Pours a hazy golden color with a finger of white head. A solid curtain of lace clings all over the glass. Nose is citrus and spices akin to clove. Taste is on par with the aroma: citrus, clove and yeast primarily. Finishes slightly dry with a bit of hop bitterness. Light feel and modestly carbonated, it is quite drinkable. As it warms, a bit of pear or light fruit blended with grain comes through and is left in the mouth.

On-tap at Falling Rock in Denver. Served in a goblet.

A: Cloudy gold with a dense white cap. The head slowly settles to a thin film. A generous lace is left behind.

S: Mild, but pleasant. Straw, lemon and biscuits dominate. As the beer warms, a light barnyard funkiness comes through.

T: Light and well refined. Dry biscuit like malts start things out. Bitterness is very light and brings a bit of coriander and lemon. A light sourdough flavor hits at the end.

M: The medium-light body is grainy and has very soft carbonation.

D: This is a nice Saison. It's light and goes down easily. Not as funky as some examples of the style, but quite enjoyable. I'm glad I finally had it.

Poured into a tumbler.

A - Very nice bright golden straw color with some good yellow haze and a nice 1 inch head that is very dense and nice and sticky. Very similar to the bottled version.

S - Very nice fruit sweet smells along with a nice yeast aroma as expected. Smells very fresh and grassy almost funky. Nice grain and some hop as well.

T - Tart fruit hints of front that mellow out into a nice malty and grainy sweetness. Some wine and pear hints as well as some clove round out the sweet profile. Similar to the bottle but fresher still and a little sweeter but still with a nice bitter and dry finish. Very delicious.

M - Nice and fluffy mouthfeel medium body with nice profile and good CO2. Refreshing and very drinkable and nice ABV.

On tap at the Winking Lizard. Hazy straw colored beer with one finger of white head in a goblet. Looks nice, cloudy, and full of taste!

Smell is nice, really nice! Belgian yeasty esters, lemon, corriander. Surprisingly little if any funkyness. This sure isn't like the New Years Dupont.

Initially sweet taste. Candy sugar, clove and corriander, sweet grain - fruity at first and finishes dry. A touch of band-aid funk in the finish. Really good saison, but I like the funked up versions better.

Mouthfeel is good, but carb is high. That seems to enhance the dry finish's feel.

Great beer, could use a bit more funk, but this was good. Glad to have sampled.

GLASS: Oversized Wine Glass
TEMP: Approx 45 Degrees

This pours a hazy, golden, yellow color that makes me think of hay. A finger and a half of thick, fluffy, white foam sits on top. The retention is good and it leaves some nice lacing, of varying degrees, down the side of the glass.

A big yeasty presence is prominent, but it's in a clean, almost mellow, sort of way. Nice notes of hay and cut grass. Pears, green apples, lemons and light tropical fruit notes are also here.

Follows the nose, almost exactly. Lots of grains combine with the nice yeastiness. A good amount of fruit notes bring a bit of sweetness along with some notes of 'peel/skin' tartness. There is a nice touch of banana. Some moderate spice notes creep in close to the end and help this one finish slightly more to the dry side.

This one has a medium, almost qualifying as full, body to it. It has a mild-to-medium level of carbonation. This helps it stay light and crisp, yet gives it a slight touch of creaminess, which helps it stay interesting.

This is very drinkable. It's light, crisp and very refreshing. The 6.5%abv helps you be able to keep this in 'session' territory.
An excellent example of the style.

At Gingerman in NYC, poured into 8oz tulip glass. Appears a golden color and slightly hazy.

Smells of earthy musty hops and phenols. There is an herbal spice to the nose that is quite pleasing. Belgian yeast strain very apparent as well throwing off clove.

Tastes phenomenal for a crisp refreshing saison. Mineral notes and some ripe fruit pull through followed cleansing phenols. I would say this brew has some grit to it - medium motufeel and lively carbonation.

Simply an awesome summer beer

On tap at Stone. Nice gold color with a cap of thick white froth. Subtle spicy aroma, cloves and pepper, lemons, and grain. Flavor is similar with a grainy base, lemony wheat notes, and a dry, peppery finish. Perfect balance and interplay between flavors are what make this the quintessential saison. Refreshing and drinkable.

Appearance: Light yellow, and opaque. Strong carbonation but fine bubbles rather than the larger ones we Americans are fond of. Belgium lace that lasts forever. Light head.

Aroma: Light yeast tones with a bit of lemon and a touch of flowers. Pleasant, but not overwhelming.

Taste: Bitter upfront, borderline too much for my taste, but quickly fades away leaving the bready/grain taste that I enjoy. Hints of sour throughout. Ends dry which seems quite appropriate.

Mouthfeel: Pleasant and light. Present without dominating the palate. Slightly above average, but could have provided a bit more pop.

Drinkability: For those who like hops and grain this is a very good beer to look for.

A- Golden, slight haze nice head that turns into a good lacing.

S- Pleasant Belgian yeast, bubble gum, fruit, spice.

T- Fruity, with a nice spice profile. Belgian yeast mixes in well but is not too over the top. Well balanced between the many flavors and the grain.

M- Very very smooth, medium to full body. Carbonation is moderate.

D- Very drinkable, can't wait to drink this during a hot summer night.

One of the better beers I have had in my life.

Had this on tap at the Birreria Paradiso in D.C.

Appearance: Gorgeous opaque golden color that almost glows with billowy, frothy head like clouds on a nice day. I know Duvel is the flagship Belgian golden ale, but in my opinion this should be it.

Smell: Like running in an Allegra commercial. Tulips, fresh cut grasses, hop fields, yeast, and just the slightest touch of lemon zest. Freshness all around.

Taste: Amazing. Citrus... like biting into a juicy lemon but with none of the associated sourness. Yeast, spices, hops... the flavor just explodes on your tongue. Finishes dry and overwhelmingly refreshing.

Overall: I can't think of any other beer that literally makes me want to go run in a field of dandelions. This beer has the imagery of a beautiful spring day associated with it (and no, I'm not drunk while writing this). Well done, Brasserie Dupont.

Had this on tap at a special function at a local beer bar. A cloudy, straw colored pour with a decent head. The aroma had citrus and light malty overtones. Flavors are oranges and a certain tartness, but very smooth. Excellent mouthfeel and finish. Letting it warm in your hands only adds to the flavors you can experience.

This is an excellent beer. It would have been nice to have more than on glass of it. Even Mrs. Kdog enjoyed it.
