Golden-orange and hazy, served with about an inch of white head with great retention. Legs in great sheets down the glass. Very attractive.

Farmhouse-earthy, phenolic yeast character, with some lighter colored fruit aromas.

Yeast-driven, this one is a little better in the bottle I think, given the secondary conditioning that works so well with this style. Grainy, herbal, with big phenolic character. So full of flavor, without much to hang your hat on.

Finish is dry, crisp, very smooth. Not much lingering flavor, but it's very pleasant with the high carbonation balancing beautifully the relatively full body. Recommended.

Enjoyed on tap at Novare Res, Portland, ME

Pours a hazy gold with a foamy three-finger off-white head that lasted for several minutes before fading to a thick cap. Decent lacing.

Smell is dominated by cloves, but there is also some banana, orange peel, coriander, pepper, candied sugar, and a bit of doughy malts.

Taste is sweet and spicy, much like the nose, and again is dominated by the cloves. It is very earthy, with a good balance of sweet, sour, spice and funk.

Medium-bodied mouthfeel. It starts off creamy and finishes crisp and dry.

Although it is not my favorite for the style, it is very drinkable and extremely enjoyable.

I love Hennepin and I know this beer is supposed to be THE saison, but I always seem to judge saisons against Hennepin. Is this wrong.

This is pretty killer though. More clear than I was expecting, but very nice. Spicy and full of cloves. Very solid.

This is a very good saison, but I think I will stick with Hennepin. I definitely recommend it though.

A: Murky, somewhat blonde (reviewed not long after changing the draft). A nice, semi-foamy head, leaving a thin lacing around the rim.

S: Quite a big aroma of fresh fruit peel, pear, some little hints of clove, and a sweet spiciness.

T: A fresh fruit zest, especially pear and apple peel. A little bit of very light citrus (not really at all tart or puckering). A bit of grassiness, and perhaps some clove. Quite nice.

M: I'd like a touch more carbonation, but some of that may be a result of the tap change. A medium body, which is nice, though. Decent, all around.

D: While this tends to lean towards a little nicer to drink, I think I'd prefer it as a sipper over swigging.

On-tap poured into a tulip glass.

A- It poured a hazy, bright, golden-yellow. I couldn't make out any sort of head, but there was a thin lace.

S- It had a lot of yeasty tones in the aroma. It made for a sweet and spicy scent.

T- It had the flavor I expected from the smell. It was wonderfully yeasty and spicy with a nice play between sweet and sour flavors.

M- There was a nice chewy and grainy feel to this beer.

D- It was an easy sipper. It had an interesting flavor, yet was quite refreshing.

On-tap 1/7/08 at Pitcher's Pub in Cumberland, RI, served in a snifter glass.

A: The beer is a light gold color, with a short white head that fades slowly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of bananas, spices, Belgian yeast, light malts and a touch of hops.

T: The taste is full of spice and Belgian yeast with a background of bananas. The malt character is thin and there's a mild but complimentary hops presence. The after-taste is spicy and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, very clean finish.

D: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, very good representation of style, this is a good beer to drink for a long time, especially if you're in the mood for the style.

I tried this beer at Max's Taphouse in Fells point on draft. The appearance was excellent, sparkling golden color with a rocky off white head.
Dupont had a fruity snappy hop aroma.
It's taste was more than delicious, it was magnificent. Light and dry but full bodied at the same time, it could be the most drinkable and delicious ale on the planet.

I would highly recommend trying this beer. It is also great in bottles where it provided an even stronger aroma. On draft seasonally at Max's. I found it at Astor liquor in Laurel in 11.2 oz bottles.

This beer has a nice slightly hazy orange/straw color combination with a good head that lingers and then leaves good lacing. Nose is yeast, wheat, orange, and hints of white pepper and lemon. Taste is great, with an earthy/clay yeast flavor and bits of hoppy goodness. Some spices come through as well as citrus. Mouthfeel is quite good, very full and frothy. Highly drinkable. Excellent example of a saison.

I had this on tap at my favorite pizza pub, served in a traditional Belgian ale glass.

Appearance was excellent -- pale gold in color, with a full, creamy head.

Aroma was unremarkable... but I've been suffering from hayfever of late, so I gave the brew the benefit of the doubt.

Flavor was excellent, with a full spectrum of sweet-bitter flavor coming through. Pleasant mandarin orange aftertaste.

Mouthfeel was fine -- substantial and creamy with no acidic qualities whatsoever.

The brew was very drinkable. I also noticed some of my colleagues (even those who aren't fond of strong-tasting beer) were ordering a second (and some even a third!) glass.

On tap at the Map Room. Pours cloudy gold with a large white head that quickly fades without much lacing.

The aroma is very light and slightly fruity, with some light malts and noble hops. I can't pick up more than a trace of acidity or Brett character.

The flavor opens up with lemon citric flavor. Light malts show up mid-palate, and restrained noble hop flavors appear on the finish. Some tartness is present, but it's very slight. There might be some phenols lurking in here too, but all the flavors are so light that it's hard to tell.

Mouthfeel is light and moderately heavily carbonated.

Very drinkable, but ultimately too boring for me. I like a more assertive beer than this, but I don't know that I can blame Dupont specifically for this-- I've had the same issues with other Saisons I've tried. People go on and on about the complexity here, but I'm willing to be crass and unsophisticated about this one; it's just not bold enough or surprising enough for me.

had this on-tap at the hopleaf, and it poured a clear straw yellow/light orange. the bouqet was somewhat subtle, maybe it was because i was drinking this between some stronger, hoppier beers. it definitely had the unique aromas of belgian yeasts going on, smelled very much like a duvel. also some light bready notes and vegetal/grassy aromas. taste was just a hint of malt sweetness and a moderate amount of hops mixed in. light in body and spritzy carbonation but not artificially so. medium finish. would try it again if the price is right.

A- light orange with cream colored head, cloudy with a little lace.

S- floral. almost nothing but perfume, a mixed bouquet of lavender, lilac, yeast, citrus, alcohol and honey. wonderful and complex. after the glass is empty, it smelled like wheat grain.

T- suprisingly bitter. only a hint of malt, but mostly grapefruit, yeast. white bread, alcohol, lemon, and some piney hops. very long and sour in the finish. leaves a bitter citrus and a slightly tinny taste behind.

M- medium thin, with medium carbonation. lingering astringency in the finish.

D- average. too strong, bitter and sour to merit a higher score.

Judging by other reviews, this beer must be better from a bottle!

Served a slightly hazy light orange with hardy any head. The aroma was of sweet fruits with some spice and hops. There was an interesting balance of sweetness with bitter spice, hops and yeast, it was a little on the bland side, however. The beer sat light on the tongue with a low carbonation. As far as saisons go, I'll stick with Henepin.

I found this on tap at Taco Mac in Lawrenceville, Georgia who would of thought? This brings up a question how long does it take this place to go thru a keg of this brew? I've had this beer many times in the bottle and the extra yeast really makes it exciting!
On tap it seemed a bit tame. The color was still a hazy pale gold.
The nose was full of herbal scents mixed with pears and wet earth.
The taste of dried grains and a spicy white pepper kick quickly smoothed out with a yeasty, citrusy finish.

Found this wonderful beer at Stumptown, a downtown Portland coffee bar(!) - on-tap(!!!). On a gorgeous late September afternoon, I felt like having one & paying homage to a strangely similar afternoon two weeks ago, sipping a Saison with friends at "La Caves Dupont" in Tourpes, Belgium.

A: Hazy golden honey color - glows in the sunlight. A fluffy one-finger+ snow white head, crowning near the rim of a small wine glass. Gorgeous lace.

S: MMM...wild yeast, bittering hops, lots of pepper and spice. Wheat and cloves, apple...even some bubblegum-sweet esters as it warms. A complex aroma, straight from the rich agricultural fields of the Hainaut region.

T: Initially, there's a soft sweetness of ripe melon and crisp, juicy apples and pears with that delicious rural yeastiness/maltiness. A zippy tang then kicks in, with pepper and spice, followed by a dry and lingering bitter hop finish. Simply delicious - the finish causes some salivation - may I have another sip? ANd another...and another...

M: Crisp carbonated mouthfeel and medium body. That dry finish clings right down the center of the tongue.

D: Perfect summer/fall beer...no wonder those French and Belgian field workers have enjoyed this so much over the centuries. An exceptional example of the style. Quenching and refreshing, this is one of THE saisons to try. Very highly recommended.

Some words of caution: when this beer is bottled in green glass, it MUST be kept in good conditions to avoid seriously nasty skunking. Fortunately, my most recent pour was on-tap, so it was in pristine condition. A few months ago, my wife and I split a bottle (or tried to...) of a Saison Dupont that was skunky to the point of undrinkability. Even at La Caves Dupont, the small pub directly across the street from the brewery, the saison began to get a skunky smell as it warmed in the sunshine while we enjoyed some on their back lawn. So beware and use extra care on this rather delicate beer! Enjoy!

This pours a hazy, almost opaque yellow color, with a 1/2 inch white head and substantial lacing on the glass. The smell is tart and lemony. The taste has a smooth yeasty component, as well as a lemony flavor with a hint of green apple tartness and a nice hop bite at the end. The flavors blend effortlessly. The mouthfeel is appropriately light. This beer is very easy to drink, especially in hot weather. A classic example of the style.

Poured into a little Saison DuPont glass (didn't even look like a beerglass, I dunno what to call it). Appearance was a hazy yellow-gold, almost completely opaque, with a fantastic frothy head that diminished into a nice ring after a few sips. Lacing was pretty nice as well.

The aroma was sweet and sour, like apple cider and yeast.

The flavor was incredibly complex! I'm not normally into the really yeasty brews, but this one was an exception for me. There were flavors of peach and pear and apple cider, yeasty Belgianness (or Belgian yeastiness, whichever you like), black pepper, and a bit of clovey spice. Definitely a pretty tangy brew.

The beer left only a SLIGHTLY dry mouthfeel, and I could slightly taste the alcohol, but not too much. It's an excellent sipping beer. I had it right after a big ol' imperial pint glass of Sea Hag IPA, and the contrast was wonderful. It was like having a liqueur at the end of a meal. It cut through the hop bitterness of the IPA to leave a refreshing cidery aftertaste, though I'm not sure if I would have wanted another glass. I wouldn't PERSONALLY have it as a session beer, but I'd say it's the perfect after-beer.

$6 a glass

On tap at the Stuffed Sandwich

A: Peach/golden hazy color. Head is solid, 1/4 inch layer of whipped cream on top of the body

S: Lots of funk. Earthy with citrus, spice, malt and bread dough.

T: Lots of various flavors. Citrusy and spicey with touches of pineapple and honey suckle. Somewhat musty with grass and biscuit. Touch of bitterness towards the end.

M: Lightly spritzy and fitting for the style

D: I actually wasn't a fan of this beer in the bottle. The tap was a different story.

On tap at Brouwer's cafe in Seattle. Fills the proper glassware with a somewhat thick marigold yellow that can't be seen through and a nice white head. Nose is fruity and intense, you can smell this beer from quite a distance, fruity aroma...also some herbal notes...some green tea-like notes were detected somewhere in the profile. Taste was big and medicinal but not off-putting at all, the yeast is very present but in a slightly different character....somewhat heavy and definitely rustic. This is my first saison and i really enjoyed it, I love trying all these new somewhat obscure beer styles and realizing how damn good beer can be.

Sampled on tap at Frisco's, served in a 0.3L tulip.
Pours a hazy golden with a big two fingered white head. Solid retention and excellent lacing. Streams of carbonation along the sides.

Very clean "Belgian" aromas of the brew. Mostly yeastiness with some citrus themes as well.

This is probably better for the masses on tap, since it loses some of its zing. Very smooth light bodied brew. The pepper, coriander and citrus flavors are here, they are just sharing space in your mouth. Very tart and dry, but extremely drinkable.

750 ml green bottle, and on tap the previous week. I'm reviewing the on-tap version because it was considerably better.

Formed a nice egg color head and massive carbonation that supported the head endlessly. slight haze and straw to golden in color.

Some light fruits in the aroma. Grounded by a hop presence that combined gives it a gritty smell. Little skunk presence but as it warmed its non-existent.

Rather spicy and grassy in the initial taste, dry, some grain balanced with some hop bitter middle. Not much malt to speak of but its in the background trying to get out. Finishes dry.

Notes: It's a decent offering. Not one I'll seek out. Price per quality ratio is lacking.
