Deep copper brown colour, ring of off white head with a bit of lace. Smell is full of candied dark fruits, some spicy yeast, brown sugar, raisin with touches of cocao present. Taste is spicy with some yeast, dark fruits, lightly bitter throughout as well, earthy, light alcohol, fruity aftertaste. medium prickly carbonation, medium bodied. Not bad, but gets lost among the much better examples of the style, still good and quite drinkable though.

Moinette Brune would likely have been a gorgeous, glowing amber if it weren't bottle-conditioned. All that sediment at the bottom made this instead a most ugly beer indeed. Is it my fault? Maybe. But I stopped pouring immediately upon seeing the stream turn murky and, frankly, feel a bit cheated leaving behind the last ounce (of an already meager 11 ounce bottle).
All that yeast may have extinguished the beer's complexion, but it set fire to its aroma. A super spicy - we're talking off-the-charts zesty - strain of Belgian yeast induces notes of pink peppercorn and clove that make a potpourri out of the beer's more floral and fruity components.
The yeast, assuming it didn't already, is again sure to stop you dead in your tracks. It heavily douses the palate in clove and pepper, obscuring the flavours of blood orange, stale rye bread, and over-ripe plum. Also on offer is a trace of coffee-ish toasted malt, an even smaller trace of lemon peel, and more significant notes of browned butter and/or hazelnut oil in the finish.
I have had very good experience aging Belgian Dubbels and Dark Strong Ales. That being said, as somewhat underwhelming Moinette Brune is today, I have a hard time believing it will be getting any better in another few months, much less years. I'd ignore the brewery's best before date - two years is way too long of a grace period. It's already thin enough for its strength.
Unlike Dupont's celebrated and emblematic Saison, Moinette Brune is more or less par-for-the-course as far as Belgian brown ales go. It is also a liquid endorsement for Monistat, but, the risk of Candidiasis notwithstanding, is by all accounts an enjoyable, if unremarkable ale.

A: Apricot orange, hazy, some material in the beer. No head, low apparent carbonation.
S: Green apple, some lemon, dates, grapes. Just a load of fruits.
T: Same as smell but with an added maltyness of flavours. Some brown sugar flavours, roasted nuts.
M: Medium carbonation, med-full body.
O: This is a great beer. Smell and taste are very different but yet balance each other.

Single bottle, part of a Dupont release at the LCBO.
Poured into an Affligem goblet. Bright caramel brown in colour, with about a half inch of head that recedes into a thin ring. Nice looking brew.
Nose is very fruity and quite on par for the style - grape, plum, raisin, dates - with spices and a bit of yeast.
The fruit, spices and bready flavors are all there, but there's that strong yeast component that isn't hitting me right, and the brew is quite boozy. Very sweet.
Carbonation is very sharp and it feels a bit off.
Not sure if this is my own personal preferences or just a less than stellar example of the style, but in either case I wasn't too impressed with this.

Beer is a light reddish-brown with a small off-white head. Head fades steadily.
Dark fruit jumps out in the nose; prune, raisin, date. Bread, brown sugar. Belgian yeast.
Flavour is not as nice as the nose. Prune and date are there, with a bready flavour, It all tastes slightly off somehow. Boozier than it should be. Both dry and sweet at the same time somehow.
Medium bodied, moderate carbonation level.
Overall, not bad, but not a winner for me. Can't quite put my finger on what it is I don't like about the flavour, but it detracts from the rest of what is going on.

(4.0) A: Deep reddish-amber with a relatively thin yet bubbly foam blanket that quickly recedes to a ring.
(4.25) S: Figs, cherries, oak, white grape, nutmeg, and toffee. Underlying leather aroma. Diverse mix of aromas that work well together.
(3.75) T: Dark fruits, cloves, banana, faint oak, and a lighter toffee-like base. Solid mix of tastes but probably not the most diverse. Oak flavour really starts coming through as this warms up – very nice. Dry with a touch of sweetness.
(3.75) M: Medium bodied with lower carbonation that comes across a bit flat. A bit sticky.
(4.0) D: A nice belgian strong ale and likely a good introduction to the style. Realizing they are different styles, I must say that if I had a choice I still prefer Moinette blond in general.

Pours a murky brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, brown sugar, and dark fruits. Taste is much the same with dark fruit flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp and prickly mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a nice aroma but the flavors aren't as good in my opinion.
