lambic smell, grass, a hint of the strawberrys, tartness, the strawberry smell is sweet though

Tart taste, not as tart as the hansenns gueuze I think, strawberry flavor is very minimal but I pick it up on the tail end, lemon tart is the predominant fruit flavor I'm getting

Mouthfeel is pretty average for a lambic, dry and tart, not as palette coating as some lambics

Good beer, would have liked it more if the strawberry was more forceful and it was made with carbonation like an oude kriek style. Good pickup on the journey through lambic land though.

Poured into a Duvel glass. Glass of cold water on the side to sip from periodically. Lot C.

Appearance: As poured the beer is a mostly clear bright golden peach color with a 1/8 to 1/4” loosely bubbled head that soon recedes to leave a ring of medium large bubbles and a thin partial layer of foam. Sipping leaves no lacing at all as any bubbles slide back down to the ring.

Smell: The aroma here is a complex mix of several things that take a while to sort out and even then I’m not sure I recognize them all. From the moment the bottle is opened onwards there is a musty, earthy, leathery character that overlays a trace of fruit that has to be strawberry but which has more of a citric character than I usually think of with strawberry. While it takes some getting used to I don’t find it unpleasant.

Taste: The first sip puckers the mouth quickly and then the tartness begins to spread. Initially the impression is of lemon that turns into some sour apple that then transforms into mild strawberry with a light touch of sweetness as it rolls back across the tongue. Meanwhile the sides of the mouth are still feeling the pucker from the tartness and way back in the retro-nasal area there is still some citric character. Mingling in here and there throughout are the musty, earthy, leathery bits that let you know this is a lambic.

Mouthfeel: The mouth feel is on the light side of medium bodied with only some faint prickly carbonation. The finish is on the long side and is very complex. From the lemon tartness it seems to mellow out into a lightly sweet strawberry flavor before the dry astringency finishes things off.

Drinkability and Overall Impression: I’m finding this beer is surprisingly drinkable. Given the aromas and flavors and some of the descriptions I read before buying it I didn’t expect to enjoy it so much, but I think that this beer suffers from the inadequacy of words alone to convey the rich complexity of a sensory experience like this. I won’t hesitate to buy another bottle of this one when I encounter it. Its not something for every night but it is definitely a treat. My overall impression is of a beer that is extraordinarily complex and that I personally am giving high marks based on that complexity and the fact that I’m enjoying this one so much.

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass.

A minimal pop of the cork. Not much noise. Lot C.

Flat dead head. Nothing generated not even a colar barley a faint ring whispered of white. Body though is a soft orange and glowing yellow.

Nose is bretty, mild yeast and fruit strawberry. Smells more gueze like with its hot bread character. Very interesting.

Sour tart but not really that acidic. Tart citrus without a distinct fruit angle (the closest seems like lemon). Mild sour bread dough on the finish going off with the vinous fruit character. Even salty finish as well.

Overall quite a fun ride that moves from strawberry to lemon sour and even salty ocean saltiness. I am not sure if the appearance is to be this sort of "flat" but otherwise alright. Checking upon other reviews, appearance is about the norm. So I call good on that.

Bottle poured into a snifter.

A- Pours a nice blondish red. No head on this one at all. No lacing either. The color looks so inviting.

S- Lots of funk. I get some berry notes not sure if its strawberry but a berry for sure. It seems to be one-sided.

T- Nice and tart, its Hanssens. Nice strawberry finish. I feel the taste is a little more complex then the nose but still kinda one sided.

M- No carbonation, but you know what don't really care. I really feel i could drink this one anytime. It is very approachable sour, although rather tart it's lack of complexity allows it to be a good transition into sours.

O- I always love Hanssens sours. This is not the best but still very good. Lack of carbonation is somewhat disappointing but like i said not a big deal either. Nice and tart like i like em'. Easy drinking sour that i would love to enjoy again.

A- the soft pop of a cork, pours a red hint to a crude clear body with no head and no carbonation. There are a few microbubbles stuck to the base of the glass.

S- Even during the pour there is a full funky barnyard nose with some horsey notes and some mushroom qualities. The lemon touch is fruit and bright in the finish.

T- The soft tartness has a gentle fruit touch to it with a finish of sharp tartness and white cheese rind with a watery fruit hint in the finish. There is a bright tartness that lingers on the tongue a bit after each sip.

M- The slick mouthfeel has a bit of a water texture and no fizz or carbonation.

O- This is a bright crisp crude beer with a touch of fruit and maybe a strawberry hint when it is very warm as well as some septic qualities that come through. The tartness is full and everything is well blended. It was a nice beer but didn't have an dominating flavors, everything was subtle except the sour.

A - Hazy golden yellow like the rest of the beers of the night, there is no head formation, retention, lace, or carbonation. Not that I expect it from a lambic. Fairly true to style here.

S - Fuuunky wild yeast and hairy armpit! Dry straw and faint fresh strawberry fruit in the background. Not very complex, but darn good!

T - Fresh bushels of strawberry are quite the unique experience in a brew. Straw and pale malt with subtle wild yeast notes to the back end. A little disappointing after the aroma. The funk is considerably lessened here.

M - Faintly tart, lacking that nice sour kick to the face, it still provides good balance. Oudbeitje has a crisp, dry, light-bodied finish.

O - I enjoyed the strawberry flavor in this lambic, but as a whole, it's missing that classic funk and sourness in the flavor and finish.

Thanks to schen9303 for this one. Poured from a 750ml corked and caged bottle into a Cantillon tulip. Most recent vintage.

Pours flat with a layer of big white bubbles from the pour that dissipates quickly. Beer is a clear goldenrod with a slight orange hue. No lace. Decent.

Nose is surprisingly funky. Sharp cheesiness mixed with strawberry puree and stinky wood. Some cobwebs and a pungent fruit tartness round out the experience. A very pleasant surprise.

Opens very tart strawberry puree. Intense sourness in the middle with very little else. A bit yeasty towards the middle. Cobwebs and straw. End is more tartness. Finish is acidic with some citrus. Aftertaste is dry, tart, and a touch yeasty. Very singular.

Light to medium bodied with little to no carbonation. Oily, slick, and filmy in the mouth and goes down sharp and dry. Dry finish with a lingering aftertaste. Very good.

This beer is a success on every levels except for the taste. Great funk aroma and a mouthfeel that is exactly what I'd expect from the style. However, the flavor profile here is very one sided. Worth a try and probably even worth aging to see what happens a while down the line.

Just one more on my Belgian foray. 375 mL into a GL snifter.

Good lord where is the head on this thing? And for that matter, where is the damn carbonation? I expect beer to produce bubbles, but not this thing. Not even close. Bright orange with obviously no lacing.

The smell is funky with slight notes of citrus and strawberry.

The taste is something else. This is what I pictured Festina Peche tasting like, only with peaches. The acid assaults the tongue for a few seconds, then comes the light taste of strawberries. Not too much, just kind lingers around in the nose and roof of the mouth.

One thing I've begun to notice about Lambics is that I taste a minty-tea type flavor in the aftertaste, and its here as well. It feels like im breathing a tea smell out of my nose, and sets Lambics a notch above others.

EDIT

Almost a year later and another batch, I get just a touch more strawberries. Its still a sour, tart lambic with some accent flavors. Perfect use of strawberries.

A: Golden straw color with some orange highlights. Very little head, actually even an agressive almost vertical pour yielded nothing but big bubbles that burst instantly. Clarity is average as there is still a decent amount of haze. 3.5

S: Aroma is pretty dominant with sweet strawberries. When I smell the neck of the bottle I get some tartness, but otherwise the glass pour smells predominantly of strawberries, or sweet berry pie. Nice though! 3.5

T&M: Taste is wood/oak, strawberries, acidity and tartness and some mild funk with a kind of medicinal flavor that starts early then fades. Mouthfeel is light, and carbonation is almost non existent. This beer had no head whatsoever and is not surprisingly very poorly carbonated. 3.5 / 2.5

O: Not sure what happened with the carbonation on this one, but it definitely affects the overall experience. The aroma is pretty awesome, if not surprisingly devoid of any funk and kinda sweet, but smelling the bottle did yield some tart funkiness. Also for containing strawberries I’m very surprised with the color. It’s in no way red or pinkish. Looks like a legit, no frills lambic. Overall this is pretty good and I’d probably drink it again. 3.5

A-Pours hazy light amber/rust color with a ring of brilliant white bubbles around the rim of the glass.

S-Intense pureed strawberry aroma, layered over Hanssens's signature barnyard funk. Hanssens lambics are so funky they occasionally smell like manure.

T/M-Thin, sharp acidic sourness, complemented by lovely sweet strawberries. The sour funkiness is right on the line of being too much, but it never quite gets there. Making a great lambic is a balancing act. You want the beer to be tart and funky enough, but the fruit flavor should also shine through. This beer embodies both qualities. Light/medium bodied with spritzy carbonation and a lingering, thin/sour finish.

O-Best strawberry based lambic I've had.

12.7 oz. bottle into a tasting nonic.

A: A slight but noticeable pop of the cork precedes an overwhelmingly funky nose right at opening. I tried really hard to slosh it around for some head, but nada. Despite that, it has a nice, hazy orange body. But almost completely flat.

S: Plenty of tartness and barnyard that mingle nicely with the strawberry and floral notes. A bit saccharine, even, and yes, vaguely reminiscent of cat piss. Not in a bad way, though. Definitely expected it, and the strawberry seems to bring it out.

T: Oooh, tart. This is a pretty solid lambic base, with a bit too sweet strawberry note--almost like powdered strawberry drink mix. A little bit of straw in the finish, back there with the barnyard. Overall, it's got a good lambic profile with some alright strawberry notes. A bit grassy, maybe.

M: Like drinking juice. This really does need more carbonation. If it had some bubbles, it'd make a most excellent beer.

O: Has some nice flavor notes, but falls pretty far short overall with what is just too flat a beer. I understand lambics and gueuzes aren't the most bubbly of beers, but this has nothing at all, and really needs something.

This beer pours a straw yellow color with a few buboes around the edge it is nearly still. The nose is funky tart apples slightly sour. The flavor follows suit with a good bit of sourness but nothing over the top the strawberry flavor is noticeable. The mouthfeel is light slightly Puckering and barely any carbonation just like a true lambic. I would definitely recommend this one to any one who wants to try sours that are not to off putting.

A: Pours a yellowish murk-- the color of polished brass. Appears a tad bit viscous than anticipated. Just the way a straight lambic should be.

S: Whoahfunk. Barnyard and pissblanket all over this guy. For the folks that smile when they walk on a horse farm, this is an experience you can really get behind. Hay blended with loamy lemons.

T: A tad bit disappointed, but good nonetheless. Acidity would have been complimented a lot better if it weren't for this muted metal on the front. Not puckering, but noticeably and pleasantly tart. Like biting into a bunch of strawberries with green ends. Not exemplary, but good.

M: A little thick. Somewhat of a slow moving liquid. Slides on the tongue a bit. For a lambic, I'd say it's spot on.

O: A really, really funky-fresh barynard lemondrop. Best enjoyed in a dirt cellar after shoveling horse shit for a day in Brussels. Highly recommended.

Sharp lactic punch. fruity strawberries wave hello amidst the puckering onslaught. dry bretty finish. the best aspect of this somewhat lackluster pour

Dismall without proper cabonation. I wish this wasn't an issue because otherwise this is a fairly delicious Lambic

Overall I would say this was a let down the same way opening up an uncarbed, 15$ beer from any other brewery is a let down. I bet it's delicious when properly conditioned

Corked and caged 375 split and poured into tulips. I've heard mice fart louder than the pop we got after pulling the cork.

A: Cloudy burnt orange hue. No head no lace. Looks sort of like dirty water in my glass.

S: Wow holy pool toys! Lot's of lactic sour and rather potent strawberry. The funk is mostly moldy basement.

T: Sour is mild in the flavor. Mostly one dimensional lactic sour. The sweetness of the strawberry is the only thing that gives this beer any depth.

M: Light and flat body. I understand that's by design.

O: So so I guess. By far the weakest offering from a brewery I love.

Poured into an oversized wine glass yielding a cloudy orange body with no head. Very still looking lambic, no lacing.

Strawberries, lactic sourness, musty/dank basement, and some oaky/vanilla characteristics in the nose. Strawberries come out more as the beer warms up. Flavor gives way to a berry sweetness, slight vinegar, and leather/barnyard/musty funk. Mouthwatering finish with a funky chalky yeast presence. Very sour beer.

Overall a good lambic. I tend to prefer my fruit lambics more carbonated, but this one was still pretty tasty.

Pours a cloudy murky orange color with barely a bubble from a very vigorous pour. The nose is very pleasant with lots of strawberries, a lactic sourness, a touch of oak, and a hint of barnyard. Taste is quite tart with lemons and some vinegar. The strawberry comes in to only partially sweeten the sour. Earthy funky musty come through before once again turning tart and lingering on the palette long after every sip. Almost non-existent carbonation, medium body, with a tart mouth puckering feel. I would have loved some carbonation in this bad boy! As is its decent but probably something I wouldn't purchase again.

This is a tough one, I've had 3 bottles now and haven't matched the first with how delicious it was and how much strawberry it had. And now the price has gone up so tough to buy at that price. This review starts with the original and adds comments on the others that followed.

Pours no head, murky peach beige color no carbonation.

Nose is wow, light lambic, tart sour, strawberry lemonaide, juicy tart strawberries, lactic acid. The ones following were similar on the nose, but a touch less strawberry.

Taste starts with a nice sour and tart lambic, typical fruits and lactic acid, and gets kicked up a notch when the sediment is swirled and dumped in, suddenly Wow Strawberries! Tons of fresh strawberry flavors, strawberry lemonaide, light acidity, lacto, juicy, light sweetness, bit of tart funk, light bitterness and a great sour flavor, but of chewy malts, and light citrus. Funk is light, mostly just tart fruits and lactic acid. On the later bottles it started similar, but adding the sediment from the bottom was mostly yeast and funk, very little strawberry added , the sediment was also much less than the first bottle, and more yeasty funk flavors, not as pleasant.

Mouth is lighter bodied, pretty much no carbonation.

Overall just wow, the original bottle is one of the best lambics I can remember, but the ones since have just been so-so. hard to judge the score on which one, so I'll try to average them.

Reminiscent of apple cider with a hue of red. Orange juice viscosity and density with no head except for a few floating bubbles.

Wonderful aromas. Very sour and pungent, funky, light strawberry and berry aromas, iodine, horse blanket, earthy esters. Tart and tingles my nose hairs. Hard to quit smelling this lambic.

Very nice, huge acidity in the middle and lightens slightly in the finish. Funk galore, horse blanket throughout, cereal type malts on deep in the finish. Tongue puckering body. Fruity and earthy at the front and middle with wood tones everywhere. Hints of strawberry, earth, and other tart fruits. Delicious.

A - pours a bright pale, a little thin looking, and no head to be noticed.

S - oh what the Funk. The beer is funky all over the nose. A very fruity sour. Lemon peel sour zest is all over. Love this.

T - really sweet. It has a very strong strawberry presence. The fruit fights with the sour funk. Lovely.

M - a little light, but still there. Very mouth coating.

O - very nice beer. Stood the test of time. A great beer.

Picked up a bottle recently and thought I'd give it a try.

It pours a nice gold color hinting at orange. ZERO carbonation. The aroma was interesting and awful at the same time. Strawberry was present as was some grassy funk but the main aroma was.... well.... urine. A ton of urine aroma. Urinal at Great American Ballpark type stuff. Just awful. The lambic is there but the catty urine aroma will not go away.

The flavor was okay. Acedic, sour, and not quite as dry as I like. Strawberries make themselves known. The real killer here is the lack of carbonation. It destroys the mouthfeel and drinkability of the beer. Feels heavy even though it isn't. I've run into this with Hanssens Kriek before too. Just flat as a board.

Overall, I wouldn't buy this again under any circumstance. A below average lambic with some weird stuff going on. Pass.

As it pours it looks really pale golden with a tinge of pink. No really head to speak of, just a few bubbles. Much more hazy in the glass. Perhaps poured a little too cold. Has an almost glowing look to it. The body is pretty, but the head is no existant (minus points). 2.5
The nose smells like horses… straight horses, and hay. I even get mushrooms, and just such a huge level of funk. Some lemony citrus notes as well. I love a good does of horse blanket in a sour beer, but this is almost too much. There’s also an almost vegetative quality, which is a bummer. 3
Super duper sour. Almost a now and later. Like biting into a lemon. Then a touch of strawberry mid palate, but its overwhelmed by the sourness. Maybe a touch of hay, but I don’t get any funk until the aftertaste which has a ridiculously long lasting finish. In the aftertaste there is a touch of cheese like funk and mushrooms. 4
The mouthfeel is epicly tart. Almost zero carbonation. Needs some carbonation to break up the tartness. 2.5

A- Clear orange with no head and no cork pop.

S- Barnyard funk is big,I am picking up some strawberry but not a lot, sour.

T- Getting a good amount of funk, a hint of tart strawberries, and a big sour finish with a hint of vinegar. Flavors seem a little out of balance but still do work well together.

M- Almost no carbonation, smooth, lighter body.

O- The more I sip this the more I enjoy it. I have had better Lambics, but this is still good. I feel that if it had more strawberry flavor and some more carbonation it would be a great beer.

375 mL bottle, corked and caged, with a label that states "Masters' Collection Limited Edition Year 2000". I bought this for $9.99 at Merchants in Dearborn about 3 weeks ago, and just today saw it again in Columbus for $10.99. One of the positive benefits of the surging interest in sour styles is that interesting things from Belgium are becoming available in the midwest in greater quantities. I'd like to try a newer version, maybe sometime in Belgium I'll see it.

This lambic pours with little carbonation, a hazy peach color and no head whatsoever. I don't really get strawberries in the aroma, probably 11 years in a bottle minimizes the fresh fruit flavor just a wee bit. Very sour smelling, lactic and acetic, very agressive lambic aroma, at this age it's not really for beginners.

Tastes just as it smells, abrasively sour and punishing, very enjoyable actually. I'm sure this was intended for consumption a long time ago, but after all this time this has turned into a delicously sour beast.

No trouble finishing my glass, going for the Oude Kriek from Hanssens next tonight.

Served in a La Chouffe snifter.

A- Hazy golden honey color. Little to no head or lacing. Tiny bubbles cling to the edge of the glass.

S- Vinegar and tart funky lemon. No strawberries noticeable on the nose.

T- Vinegar and funk hit you right away, with some tart lemon/citrus flavors. Very faint amount of strawberries in the aftertaste.

M- Very thin with almost no carbonation.

O- A little disappointed there wasn't a more noticeable taste of strawberries, but still a good sour lambic. Still love their Oude Kriek though.
