This is a tough one, I've had 3 bottles now and haven't matched the first with how delicious it was and how much strawberry it had. And now the price has gone up so tough to buy at that price. This review starts with the original and adds comments on the others that followed.

Pours no head, murky peach beige color no carbonation.

Nose is wow, light lambic, tart sour, strawberry lemonaide, juicy tart strawberries, lactic acid. The ones following were similar on the nose, but a touch less strawberry.

Taste starts with a nice sour and tart lambic, typical fruits and lactic acid, and gets kicked up a notch when the sediment is swirled and dumped in, suddenly Wow Strawberries! Tons of fresh strawberry flavors, strawberry lemonaide, light acidity, lacto, juicy, light sweetness, bit of tart funk, light bitterness and a great sour flavor, but of chewy malts, and light citrus. Funk is light, mostly just tart fruits and lactic acid. On the later bottles it started similar, but adding the sediment from the bottom was mostly yeast and funk, very little strawberry added , the sediment was also much less than the first bottle, and more yeasty funk flavors, not as pleasant.

Mouth is lighter bodied, pretty much no carbonation.

Overall just wow, the original bottle is one of the best lambics I can remember, but the ones since have just been so-so. hard to judge the score on which one, so I'll try to average them.

Purchased at Premier Gourmet in Buffalo. Corked 375 ml bottle, states Limited Edition 2000 on the label.

Pours a slightly hazed golden, thin white head forms, some lace spots, settles down to a thin ring. Smell is insane, very harsh, citrus acidity, yeast, super barnyard, musty hay, burnt almost sulphurous aroma, like burnt bread. Taste is crazy too, very sour and acidic, lemon, honey, burnt bread astringency, charred wood, funk, more acidity. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with low carbonation. Crazy beer, I give respect to anything that makes me wince in a good way now. Really challenges the palate, worth a shot if you like funky stuff.

No "pop"action at all from the uncorking. A vigorous pour does not form any sort of a head. Only the slightest of bubbly edging. Appearance is light orange with a dash of sunlight. This is one funky smelling beer. Got the horse blanket / barnyard thing going on. And also a little mixture of sweet and sour. Good nose. This beer has got no carbonation at all. Flat to say the least. Like kool aid. The taste is quite acidic and biting. Mouth puckering to a large degree. And tart. Lemon juice in a big way. Grass and hay. Acetic acid. The taste is o.k., but the mouthfeel really drags this beer down for me.

Pours a light blush/ amber color with a very thin, fizzy pinkish-white head that quickly dissapears. Funky aroma with hints of strawbeery and cream as well as an earthy, oak presence. Slightly watered down, with very little carbonation and a slightly funky, earthy oak flavor. Not very acidic and very easy to drink with with a slight puckering strawberry, floral flavor.

Coming in a 375ml green bottle, corked and caged, served lightly chilled in De Dolle Oerbier's long-stemmed goblet.

A: the bottle is opened almost without any hissing sound, suggesting a rather flat body; it ends in the glass a dark orangey golden hue, good clarity, with microscopic fizz attached to the sides of the glass all over, without any beer head.
S: very sharp and odorous funkiness (close to the level of Girardin's Black Label that I personally came [next to] sick to smell, but in a surprisingly... surprised way in my very early days in the world of Lambic/Geuze) comes with a faintly sweet oakiness, pungent cider and a thick body of savoury-sweet salted prunes and oxidised Chinese white pears... Strawberries (mixed of overripe-dessert variety & sour-tannic green ones) come closely at the tail of the pungent lambic, but overall quite trivial.
T: this is the most weird fruit-lambic that I've tried, for the fruits have provided neither a "spark" nor a backbone to the overall flavour, almost non-existent are the strawberries... well, never mind... The lambic itself comes very flat, though, that only the high level of savoury funkiness and salted citrus peels quickly develops and settles down equally fast to a really quiet aftertaste of chewy tannins of old wood, spicy hints of dried white olives and all the musty trimmings that an old lambic would demonstrate. Not bad is the taste actually, if disregarding the fruity bits...
M&D: flat-bodied, musty/funky to bits, with a super-light fruitiness from the strawberries that are said to be used in the brew. Perhaps I've never tasted any strawberry-lambic as understated as this one, but something tells me that this bottle is not pretty right, as this level of carbonation (next to none) is not even quite right for a bottled lambic. That said, the lambic base still shows a degree of decency in quality that can't be brushed off that easily. This is "Hanssens", so nothing should go too wrong, I take it?

Cloudy caramel colour with little to no head. Sour fruity aroma with a moderate strawberry component sitting on top of wood. The flavour is similar to the aroma, but the strawberry character is much more pronounced and there's more of an earthy quality to the woodiness. Pleasant, tart acidity balances the sweetness. Quite tasty and refreshing.

Labeled "B. United International's Masters' Collection Limited Edition Year 2000." I hadn't heard of this until I stumbled upon it at the Pizza Port bottle shop a few weeks back. It pours transparent golden with no visible carbonation, aside from the bubbles resulting from a hard pour, which aren't really indicative of carbonation. So, as I said, there is no visible carbonation.

The nose is of tart lemon and subtle strawberry notes. Notes of cheese, musty barnyard, wet leather, blacksmith's daughter, and wet horse blanket. It's pretty damn funky. There's a moderate lactic quality as well as oak.

The flavor opens with a strong citric acidity and notes of salty lemon rind, oak, and subtle strawberries. Brett quickly steps in and provides the requisite barnyard and horse blanket funk. Other notes are of musty cheese and enchanted caves. This is surprisingly delicious. Tartness is at an upper moderate level. Lactic and acidic notes are strong in the finish which, incidentally, is when the strawberries are most evident. They're subtle, but really add a nice touch to an already tasty beer. They stay with you after the other flavors fade. The acidity took me by surprise as I sipped absent-mindedly, causing me to cough more than a few times.

The beer is still, but the oak and acidity provide a pleasantly dry and full mouthfeel. Overall, an absolutely delicious beer and a lucky find. Highly recommended.

Thought this might be sweeter than it was- glad to see that it wasn't and I should have trusted this brewery not to release one of the sugary fake lambics that seem so popular. This is probably the only strawberry lambic I've ever had. Poured a murky golden with no head or carbonation. Not unusual in a real lambic. Aromas of light, sweet strawberry up front, followed by a nice mellow sourness and some funky barnyard smells. Classic. The taste is similar- sweet strawberry turns to sour funk while in the mouth with the typical slightlt bitter taste of damp hay and horseblanket right at the end. The mouthfeel is still, smooth, and even a bit creamy- nice trick, that. Quite decent if not quite transcendant. I'd definitely have another.

A 10 year old bottle purchased from Rick's Wine and Grocery. 375 ml bottle split with my favorite wife.

A: Almost completely flat, copper hue

S: faint hint of strawberries, funk, tannins, grapefruit

T: Sharp, very sour, strawberries have faded and have been run over by an angry, acidic sour monster

M: flat (taking into account that it is 10 years old), biting, makes ya pucker

D: I think this beer is past its prime, though still enjoyable. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to try it.

33cl bottle at 't Poatersgat, served in a Drie Fonteinen tumbler, Oudbeitje is a still, strawberry blonde, with no head or lace.

Smell is strong brett, unmistakeably funky lambic, with a hint of strawberries.

Taste is pretty good. Starts out very heavy on the strawberry, then a big lambic blast mid-palate before a very clean finish. Well made and enjoyable.

Mouthfeel is still, slick but light bodied.

Drinkability is high, this slides down with ease. A nice hint of strawberry but still strongly on the funky side, yet remains quaffable and clean. Yummy.

Appearance – The body is gorgeous. It lights up the room. It is bright orange, and I mean orange, orange, orange, in color. Predictably, the head was non-existent.

Smell – Oh, this one is raunchy. The barnyard notes and smelly horse blanket are here in spades. There’s a nice, sugary scent as well along with some kind of wicked spicing.

Taste – This is good. The emphasis is on the horsey flavors, but the sweetness can not be denied. And, as indicated on the label, there are some nice, soft, strawberry notes in here as well. I particularly enjoyed the way in which the barny flavors came in.

Mouthfeel – I liked the play that I got from the sour and sweet combination. They mixed very well together, which may be an indication that my four-year-old bottle was ready to pour. This one also was beginning to take on some dry characteristics at the finish.

Drinkability – This was a complex example of the style and made for a great afternoon sipping beer.

Comments – This is a 2000 vintage.

Appearance - Extremely hazy blond with only a few wispy bubbles for a head. A light carbonation is faintly visible in the body.

Smell - Moderate barnyard funk mixed with an awesome strawberry jam aroma. Leather. Apple cider. The strawberry sweetness comes out more and more as the beer gets closer to room temperature.

Taste - Nice sweet/sour dynamic, leaning a bit more toward the sour side. Notes of oak and lemon peel with a big berry flavor. Light acidity - this is a pretty gentle lambic. The finish is surprisingly clean, leaving only a mild sourness on the palate.

Mouthfeel - Pretty light on the tongue. Carbonation is very low and just barely noticeable.

Notes - This lambic paired extremely well with spicy Indian food.

375ml bottle. 2000 vintage.

Little sound when the cork slides out and the pour produces a few disparate bubbles on top of a fairly clear golden amber with some pinkish hints. I decided to leave the residue in the bottle to start.

Aroma is nice and complex with some acetic acid, light sugary strawberries and a little bit of earthy funk thrown in.

Taste is initially acidic with a serious zing on the tongue. The strawberries are very subtle and don't show out as much as in the aroma. The finish is fairly dry with a little lemony tartness.

Mouthfeel is close to flat with low carbonation and some dryness.

Not the best lambic I've had but better than most out there. Glad I got to try this one.

Hanssens Oudbeitje Lambic

LOOK: Pours a still looking clear golden peach color.

SMELL: Strawberry is bright and in the forefront.

TASTE: Very tart base beer provides a nice sour edge. The strawberries that dominated the nose are much softer in the taste with just a small unripe green/pink strawberry tartness. Dry wheat base, oaky and full on sour.

FEEL: Light to medium body, a bit syrupy, with micro carbonation. Dries out in the finish with moderate barrel influence and lingering tartness.

OVERALL: Smells incredibly of strawberry, which fades in the taste and stays sour. Drinks like an unblended Lambic, as carbonation is minimal even from Hanssens standards. Still, I found this to be enjoyable. A nice dry sour from Belgium.

Year 2000 edition corked and capped bottle.

The pour is a golden honey lacking a real head of any kind. Their is a weird suspension and haze the stays right in the center column of that amber honey. A few bubbles pass through, but not many. The arom is a funky, earthy mess. makes me think of a refinery or old wet shoes. The taste gives some tart hint of strawberries, but not much. A very fiery tartness overwhelms the senses. Very acidic. I know lambics are supposed to be funky and tart, but give me a break. I will never buy this beer again.

When I was doing the Beerfly for the Palace Hotel, I came across my notes for the Hanssens Strawberry Lambic that I had there on the last night of our Easter trip in 2000. I remember it so vividly. Guy (the owner) was behind the bar and he had had some good trade from us throughout the weekend, and produced some unlabelled corked brown glass bottles with, as he called it, Hanssens Strawberry Lambic. The only sign of something strange was a dark red steel cap above the champagne cork but under the cage enclosure. It is now marketed and labelled as Oudbeitje I see.
The first surprise was the color - I expected some pinky red lambic - but this was a dark copper colored murky looking lambic with no carbonation whatsoever, totally flat. This was a lambic that had hints of strawberry, rather than say a steeped Kriek where the fruit is dominant. The acidity was still quite high (good), sourness was prevalant at first, but the tinge of strawberries invaded in the middle and balanced the dryness at the end to a rather sharp but sweet finish. Excellent attempt at a new fruit lambic, only really let down by its flat appearance. I simply must try this again.

375 mL bottle, corked and caged, with a label that states "Masters' Collection Limited Edition Year 2000". I bought this for $9.99 at Merchants in Dearborn about 3 weeks ago, and just today saw it again in Columbus for $10.99. One of the positive benefits of the surging interest in sour styles is that interesting things from Belgium are becoming available in the midwest in greater quantities. I'd like to try a newer version, maybe sometime in Belgium I'll see it.

This lambic pours with little carbonation, a hazy peach color and no head whatsoever. I don't really get strawberries in the aroma, probably 11 years in a bottle minimizes the fresh fruit flavor just a wee bit. Very sour smelling, lactic and acetic, very agressive lambic aroma, at this age it's not really for beginners.

Tastes just as it smells, abrasively sour and punishing, very enjoyable actually. I'm sure this was intended for consumption a long time ago, but after all this time this has turned into a delicously sour beast.

No trouble finishing my glass, going for the Oude Kriek from Hanssens next tonight.

2006 vintage at Maxs tonight

A: Absolutely flat. Clear, light amber. Halfway through, I add the yeast in to make things a little murky (after tasting, of course)

S: The most delicate and nuanced strawberry note is present in the back, behind the funk. Absolutely beautiful

T: Starts off pretty funky with a definite deliciously rancid flavor before the strawberry wafts in gently, makes its presence felt and ambles along leaving a long, dry, funky finish

M: Somehow, Hanssens manages to do the uncarbonated lambics right. This one feels pretty good, though, with a little more sweetness, it would be even better

D: Probably the tastiest beer I drank tonight. Will seek out again

**Edit 12 March 2012**
Drinking a bottle of the 06 that I picked up at Maxs back in the day. I found the 2000 harsh and undrinkable, so I didn't have high hopes for this one.

The glorious but delicate strawberry character that this beer had fresh has fallen off, but not by much. As it breathes, it does grow in prominence, with a fairly complex fruit character. Delicate strawberries with some seed tannins (not as intense as raspberry lambics, though). For a Hanssens lambic, this smells surprisingly mellow, and it is so on the palate as well, with a fairly oak and vanilla forward lambic base with a sourness that brings to mind rotting lemons, less some sweetness, and some lactic acid. Fairly slick on the palate. The strawberries are still fairly noticeable on the palate, lending a sweetness and acidity to complement the lemony lambic. Funk character is quite low here, apart from a mild earthiness on the mid-palate, there isn't much. This is one aspect that I wish had a little more complexity to it. Quite oaky on the finish with vanilla and tannins to add the low level of carbonation that's present. Oh, and it doesn't really need much carbonation for the flavor profile IMO. I never thought I'd say it, but this is a fairly mellow and easy-drinking Hanssens beer, one I could drink multiples of. Enjoyable, recommended, unique. 4/4/3.5/4/3.5

This is a great traditional lambic beer, brewed by the fine folks at Hanssens. This beer poured a nice dark yellow colour with a small white cap of foam on the top. The aromas were of horse blanket, various farm odors and animal smells, musty grapes, and a more general mustiness. The flavor was super tart, lip puckering and excellent. Nice strawberry flavors appearared in the middle, before the dry as all hell finish. The mouthfeel was very lively and carbonated and the drinkability is good if you like these traditional lambic beers (which I do) A far cry from a lindemans, or even a liefmans!

Cheers!

A - No head whatsoever. Perfectly clear with a light copper colored body.

S - Deep earthy, sour, cheesy smell. Aromas of sour cherries, wet, mossy stones, and earthy, salty cheese. Some noticeable goaty, caproic smell and a hint of black olives. Very savory aroma overall.

T - Profound, puckering acidity. Tart pie cherries and a surprising fresh parsley note. Strong apple like flavors, reminiscent of a New England cider but with more complex earthiness.

M - Very thin body and no carbonation.

D - Drinkability as such is pretty low on this one, in that it would be quite difficult to take down more than one of these. It is probably the most sour beer I have ever had; and while the aroma is spectacular, the flavor is a bit o a let down.

I paired this with some Taleggio cheese and homemade pumpernickel bread, and while the aroma matched the cheese quite well, the flavors were a bit dissonant.

The smell of strawberries spreads around the room when I opened the champagne-style cork.

The liquid is opaque. The colour is an odd semi-bright beige-red-orange one that I have never seen before. There is no head at all.

The smell is a blend of sweet strawberries (both wild and the usual ones) jam and earthy notes of vinegar/iodine. As one could have expected… Maybe a little bit too candy-like for me.

The taste got nothing to do with sweets or artificial flavouring! It is dominated by a powerful dry sourness with some gentle notes of red berries. There are also iodine and minerals, malt vinegar, malic acid and bitter herbs. Yes, it is very sour! The aftertaste is tenderer wit sour mineral notes and a fine, growing natural taste of matured strawberries.

The carbonation is mild with some gentle small bubbles. I had thought that it should have been much stronger.

A tricky fruit lambic; The fruit is all there, but the dominant sourness is just a little too much in this beer. Don’t get me wrong, I like lambics and geuezes, but this one just wasn’t balanced the way I like it.

350 mL bottle with '2006 Limited Edition Masters Collection' on the label. Been sitting in my cellar for the past two and a half years. Pours a pretty clear dark gold color with a slight pinkish hue. No carbonation whatsoever, I am bummed that the bubbles must have escaped some time ago.

Heavenly strawberry aroma with the delectable notes of lacto sourness. Absolutely amazing, perfect blend of the fruit and lactic acid.

Wow - tart and sour as hell with a very nice and prevalent strawberry presence. Lack of carbonation is a bit of a downer, but I am surprisingly still loving this beer, a delightful sensory experience. Damn I love lambics! Just enough sweetness to counteract some of the sourness. Has a nice bit of 'funk' in here as well. As the bottle drains, it becomes more tart than sour as the palate adjusts fairly quickly to the sour aspect. There is also a mild rubbery flavor that has me thinking brettomyces might be involved here. I wish I had 20 more of these around, awesome beer. Lack of CO2 is the only thing keeping this from an A+ in my book.

No date or info. (Limited Edition 2006)

Thanks to Beerwolf77 for sharing all things sour!

A - Hazy golden yellow like the rest of the beers of the night, there is no head formation, retention, lace, or carbonation. Not that I expect it from a lambic. Fairly true to style here.

S - Fuuunky wild yeast and hairy armpit! Dry straw and faint fresh strawberry fruit in the background. Not very complex, but darn good!

T - Fresh bushels of strawberry are quite the unique experience in a brew. Straw and pale malt with subtle wild yeast notes to the back end. A little disappointing after the aroma. The funk is considerably lessened here.

M - Faintly tart, lacking that nice sour kick to the face, it still provides good balance. Oudbeitje has a crisp, dry, light-bodied finish.

O - I enjoyed the strawberry flavor in this lambic, but as a whole, it's missing that classic funk and sourness in the flavor and finish.

Reviewed on 7/2/08. Bottle, 2006. Pours a cloudy orange with no head. Aroma is extremely funky, with some sour fruit. Flavor also quite funky but not too sour, some wood/oak, sharp sour finish. I get a vague fruitiness but no strawberries in particular. Very drinkable for a lambic. I'd love to have a draught sample of this...if it existed.

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass.

A minimal pop of the cork. Not much noise. Lot C.

Flat dead head. Nothing generated not even a colar barley a faint ring whispered of white. Body though is a soft orange and glowing yellow.

Nose is bretty, mild yeast and fruit strawberry. Smells more gueze like with its hot bread character. Very interesting.

Sour tart but not really that acidic. Tart citrus without a distinct fruit angle (the closest seems like lemon). Mild sour bread dough on the finish going off with the vinous fruit character. Even salty finish as well.

Overall quite a fun ride that moves from strawberry to lemon sour and even salty ocean saltiness. I am not sure if the appearance is to be this sort of "flat" but otherwise alright. Checking upon other reviews, appearance is about the norm. So I call good on that.
