Sample from bottle, RBNG 2014 in Halden, Grand Tasting. ABV was 7.5%. Golden to orange colour, large white head. Distinctly spicy and hoppy aroma and flavour. I tasted only about half of the beers available at the Grand Tasting, but this was the "Beer of the Tasting" for me.

750 ml bottle into signature tulip glass, late 2013 bottling. Pours slightly cloudy bright gold color with a 2 finger dense and rocky white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Dense foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big lemon, grapefruit, orange zest, pear, pepper, clove, light banana, cracker, bread, light honey, herbal, floral, grass, light pine, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/earthy hops, pale malt, and fruity/spicy yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of big lemon, grapefruit, orange zest, pear, pepper, clove, light banana, cracker, bread, light honey, herbal, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/yeast earthiness. Fair amount of earthy yeast spice/hop bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, grapefruit, orange zest, pear, pepper, clove, light banana, cracker, bread, light honey, herbal, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/yeast earthiness on the finish fora while. Awesome complexity and balance of citrus/earthy hops, pale malt, and fruity/spicy yeast flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and slightly prickly/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome Belgian IPA. All around great complexity and balance of citrus/earthy hops, pale malt, and fruity/spicy yeast flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

750 ml bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. "Best before 2016" printed in small print on the bottle. I found this oddity at the local Costco. '2013 Limited Edition'. 'Poperings hommel bier'. 'Nieuwe oogst'. Not entirely sure what to expect with this one.

Poured into a Duvel tulip glass.

A - Pours a golden citrus orange colored body with four to five big fluffy fingers of white foamy head. Hazy with lots of very fine sediment floating in the glass. Fat scraggly lacing. Looks very nice.

S - The smell is very nice also. Fresh, grassy, grainy, wheaty. Lightly citrusy lemon / orange rinds. Floral & herbal. Crisp Belgian yeast presence. Smells very nice.

T - The taste follows the nose - lots of crisp Belgian yeast, grapey, bubblegum, grassy, wheaty, grainy, herbal & floral. Very earthy and pure tasting. An interesting and unique hop variety used here, that's for sure.

M - Feel is crisp, clean, with good moderate hop bitterness / resins. Herbal, floral, and bitter on the finish.

Overall, a very nice Belgian style IPA. Crisp, clean, and fresh. A well executed example of the style from this random find, a brewery I've never heard of before. Nicely done, I'd be interested to try more from this brewery.

Poperings Hommel Bier 2013 ---4/5.

This one pours a a very cloudy pure golden bier that has a fluffed white thick head that is very long lived that settles so slow it leaves virtually no lacing. The head is vibrant and very aromatic. The foam nearly a perfect white with a slight golden tint as well.

The nose is wonderfully spicy with breadiness, floral notes, vanilla, nutmeg, lemon and citrus with the hops being the floral notes. The hops are very aromatic in this one with the freshness being fairly obvious due to the fact that drying hops loses some of the highly volatile essential oils.

The taste is extremely bitter hops and is the most dominant feature of this beer as was obviously intended. Poppering Hops are just so unique that their bitterness is rather sharp while the nose is floral. there is strong contrast between the nose and flavor that is counter intuitive. The malt is very dry but not drying to the palate. The beer leaves a nice wet finish to the palate with a slow to fade, but not lingering, aftertaste that is quite pleasant. The breadiness of the bottle fermentation is there but subtle as is the spiciness due to the dominant nature of the hops. Typically I prefer a slightly fruitier malt with such a strong and bitter hopping, but this is an exception. This dry malt with extremely bitter hops just flat out works.

The mouthfeel is not as rich as I was expecting from the appearance but is not too watery either. The dryness of this beer is in contrast to the mouthfeel that leaves the palate moist to savor the lingering effects of the volatile elements of the fresh hops.

Overall this is a fantastic beer. I just love it in it bitterly refined awesomeness.

Poured from a 750 mL corked & caged bottle into a Brewer's Art goblet. Moderate hand. Best served before 2016 per the label.

A: Hazy, golden yellow-orange. 1.5 finger off-white head with good retention. Light lacing.

S: Belgian yeast with a nice, light spice. Rich European-style hop with a distinctly fresh quality. Grass, straw. Light bread. Touch of citrus, indistinct fruit. Hint of vanilla.

T: Touch of pale malt sweetness and clean Belgian yeast nicely intermingled with a relatively assertive hop bitterness. Dry finish with a solid crispness. Minimal alcohol. Light pine and grapefruit, but mostly a balanced, noble-type hop.

M: Moderately high carbonation with a pleasant creaminess and no prickliness. Moderate body. Drinks supremely.

O: I am a big fan of the usual Poperings Hommel Bier offering and this 2013 limited edition was no disappointment. Very nice hop notes in a tasty Belgian pale framework. Admittedly, it's more pale ale territory than IPA. The hops take center stage, but there is solid supporting cast of even-handed, high quality yeast, malt, fruit and spice character. Very balanced. Man, this is a really nice beer.

Prost!
