22oz bottle split 2 ways into tulips. Big thanks to BA KevSal for including this as an extra in a recent trade!
Appearance: Careful pour yields a huge tan head that dissipates slowly and leaves a thick wall of lacing. Pours black.
Smell: Subtle dark fruit aromas. Opens up with time, gets with more chocolate and booziness enriching the dark fruit.
Taste: Chewy date and fig flavors, then a big hit of dark chocolate that resolves gracefully into nutty roasted malt. Not as hot as 11% ABV would have you expect, but still a bit hot. This actually works really well along with the roasted malt bitterness to keep the rich dark fruit flavors balanced.
Like the aroma, the taste gets better and better with time and warmth. The complexity goes out, some subtle oak flavors start mixing in with the date/fig. Raisiny malt flavor blends perfectly with the fig and date additions. Great recipe, great execution.
Mouthfeel: Full side of medium bodied. Pretty hot. Moderate carbonation. Neither dry nor sticky or sugary.
Overall: I liked year old Black Butte XXIII a little bit more, but this is an awesome beer. The fig / date / dark chocolate additions make themselves known and benefit the beer.
