Nice orange glow, good head, decent lace/retention. Weird spice and butter aroma. Starting to get worried about the experimental beer I was most jazzed to try.
Where's the hops? And why all the butter/diacetyl? Is this like a joke, call it hop secret (along the lines of the buttery popcorn 'pop secret')? Anyways, dude, not cool, this is by far Deschutes worst alleged hoppy offering I've ever had. Maybe the secret is that they replaced hops with butter and soap.
Really, love this brewery, hate this beer.

I had this at the PDX Pub on 6.10.11
A - Comes to me in a Pint glass. Bright orange with a large, off-white head. Lots of lacing and decent retention.
S - Citrus, Pine, and strong floral tones.
T - All are here, but the floral taste is very strong. Tastes like girly soap to me.
D - Good carbonation.
O - I like the idea here, but the floral/soap taste was awful. I couldn't even finish it. I love Deschutes, but this one should have never been served.

Appearance: Hop Secret comes out copper in color with a lot of carbonation. Nice retention and lacing. Looks pretty solid.
Smell: Caramel malts, light grapefruit, a bit of spiciness and bitterness. All pretty hard to pick out.
Taste: Caramel malts up front with some spiciness following. A hint of bitter grapefruit follows, with a lot of hop bitterness on the back end. The bitterness is by far the most prevalent flavor in this beer. It seems to be bitter for bitterness' sake, without the other more flavorful grapefruit/citrus flavors that normally accompany.
Mouthfeel/Overall: This beer is between light and medium bodied with high carbonation. Very smooth. Good. Overall this beer is okay, but overly bitter with nothing to complement. Probably not something I would choose to have again if I had other options.
