2014 vintage.
Deep mahoghany tone, thin layer of tan foam, birds nest of larger bubbles in the center.
Leather and dark fruit, molasses, oak, oxidized malt. Rich and old.
Taste is rich, big malt and oak, mild dried dark fruit. Mellow feel with very light carbonation. Chewy and dry, reminiscent of Thomas Hardys or Port minus the cloying sweetness. Dynamite pairing with dark chocolate.
Thanks to Kristina for this one, and happy 20th anniversary to Alvinne!

Special edition. Only 9% abv.
Pours black with a 2 finger head of tan foam sitting on top.
I get some fruity tartness and roasted malt up front with a mild nose of wood.
The tartness is the first thing I notice in the taste followed by roasted malt, dark chocolate bitterness, and some wood from the oak.
All of the flavours seem to working together nicely and the alcohol is not in your face. Just some warming after each of the swallows.
Close to full bodied with medium to medium light carbonation.
I do like this offering from Alvinne.

$23 a bottle for the 750.
Cellared for <2 years.
Drank on 10-11-12
The other reviewers are being polite about this failed funk. This beer tastes like an unintentionally infected RIS. Remember the infected 2009(10?) Speedway stouts that tasted like grape juice? This is very similar.
Infected on purpose? I don't know, I didn't do my due-diligence or any research before writing this review, so I may be completely wrong. I was expecting a Oaked RIS with hints of wine. It was a weird gross sour mess.
I'm not sold on the idea that it was totally intentional. If this was my home brew, I wouldn't share it with my friends.
disappointed.

Review from 8/2010 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a dark red amber. Thick tan head with lacing. Sour malt aroma. Odd flavor without any of the typical Russian stout elements. Flavor is high in fruit and is tart. Mild malt. Like a cross between an English stout and a lambic. Oaking is not strong, which is too bad as it would have redeemed this one for me. Initial taste is interesting, but the finish is astringent and slightly metallic. There was a hint of weeping around the cap on this bottle, so possibly compromised, but the flavor profile is in line with other reviews. Interesting, but a miss for me because of the finish.

BLACK! The head raises to about half an inch of fine, light coffee foam, then drops to a thin layer.
Roasted black coffee and some milk chocolate are evident but overpowered by astringency. (Windex?) The astringency builds with warmth then settles out.
Oddly, light red wine that builds with some chocolate and a fruity backdrop. The fruity flavors build into a long finish.
Medium body and up front with alcohol in a Dogfish Head snifter. Carbonation ranges from raspy to lively in this drying beer.
Fruitiness and aroma clearly hold this back, especially for the style. Not recommended for reading.
