Review from notes taken in Koln in March 2016:
Bottle from the Biermuseum in Cologne, Germany. Label calls it a "dunkle Winterbier." Astra "Ass Cold." Notes below are regrettably brief:
A: No head whatsoever. No lacing either.
Body colour is a clear cola caramel-brown, with soda-like carbonation bubbles plainly visible crowding the sides of the glass.
Looks quite poor, to be honest.
Sm: Artificial caramel flavouring, sticky cola syrup, off-puttingly high sweetness. Suggests a saccharine yet watery brew with no flavours of interest.
Aromatic intensity is moderately low (thankfully). I detect no booze, hop character, yeast character, or frankly any real robust malt character. Barely seems like a beer.
T: Yeah, this is abysmal. Artificial caramel flavouring fails to hide the watery taste of this weak brew. There's no hop flavour, no malt flavour (aside from generic sweetness), and no yeast flavour. Drinks like an alcopop at best.
Mf: Watery, weak, thin, smooth, wet, undercarbonated, unrefreshing. Poor execution across the board.
O: When I think of a winterbier of any style, I think of a robust malty beer with above average alcohol presence - a heavier brew to warm one on wintry nights. This is nothing of the sort - but rather thin near-beer with no redeeming characteristics whatsoever. I guess the label art and name are kind of cool?

Poured from a 12 OZ. bottle into a pint glass. The appearance is an light brown-copper color with a small white head. The aroma is a light malt and grass smell. The taste is mostly sweet malt. An excellent bock beer.

Nice take on this style (I was expecting another pale lager). Beautiful pour with thick airy head and nice dark amber color. Light malty aroma with slightly stronger, but mellow taste. Light lingering palate. A pleasant surprise.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #86 (Mar 2014):
Malty, Grassy, Rustic
A straight-up bock, a rarity in the US. Exceptional sweet maltiness from start to finish. Suggestions of currants, bitter greens and grape skin flaunt some complexities. A bit of a rare gem here; a little rough around the edges, but ends up being pretty easy to knock back.

"Arschkalt" meaning somthing like "fu*%&ç cold" and is like the name suggests a seasonal winter brew
color is somewhere between amber, copper and brown
pours a not very firm nor foamy head
smell is very light, hints of nordic wood and lawn
taste is a bit more defined, very present sweet roasted malts and some notes of blackcurrant and bittercress
a pleasant seasonal beer, however perhaps not a classic ....
