Style | ABV
English India Pale Ale (IPA) |  6.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round. bottle (21)

Notes:
This ale has its origins in the traditional English style, with a generous helping of American exuberance. Bright copper in color, it has an assertive hop bitterness balanced with a subtle malt foundation. Dry hopping at two sates of the brewing process provides floral and fruity hop flavors adding to the complexity of the brew. Original gravity ~ 1060; Alcohol by volume -- 6%.

12oz bottle, pours a deep copper color with a frothy white head that holds decent retention and leaves some lacing on the glass. Aromas are earthy, bready, malty caramel, citric, piny. Tastes are nice an malty up-front with bready malt and caramel, toasted grain, earthiness, pine, faint grassy hop, somewhat spicy hop finish. Nice balance with a good malty dose I'd expect from the style. Mouth-feel is medium with good carbonation. Overall, this one grew on me the more I drank. Great for a session, exceptional balance, very well executed.

A - Well rough start so far. Sediment floaties in my glass, very little head, and no bottling date to speak of. Ow and did I miss the fact this was a twist off? Never a good sign for a IPA. Color is a relatively clear dark amber brow.
S - Pine and citrus hops, somewhat muted, with an English tea like malt base.
T - Well it's hoppy but not dish soapy with a harsh edge it does have some balance. Malts seem to be a sort of toffee like sweetness parrying to the hops heck even lingers on the palate. Very impressive for such an average beer.
M - Medium bodied, somewhat chewy, not as dry as I expected.

Overall I guess with a bottling date and a non-twist off cap these guys could make this IPA much better. Slightly above average IPA.

This is a true IPA in every sense of the word. Pours a medium-medium copper with a 1 finger head. Slight lacing on the glass.

Smells piney with some citrus notes. Not overpowering for an IPA at all.

Slightly malty, but only if you concentrate on it. The hops really take center stage, but aren't overpowering if you're a fan of IPAs. Dry back-end, but not more so than any other IPA.

I don't know why I've been avoiding this (probably because I still harbor some resentment towards Mr. Geary after my last encounter with HSA), but this is the Eddie Murray of IPAs. It does everything very well, but not enough to draw attention to it. I'm here to change that. If you like IPAs, BUY THIS TODAY. I promise you won't regret it.

I was a bit skeptical regarding how this beer would taste, based on the fact it's brewed in Maine, bottle label is not too impressive, and it was on the cheaper side price-wise. I was indeed wrong. It's a fine English style IPA, tastes good, and goes down smoothly/easy.

It pours a hazy, copper colour. The nose is not huge, but I do get plenty of pine resins. The thing I like best about it, is the hop/malt balance. They did not go overboard and turn it into a sweet, hoppy, syrupy mess, as many of the current, overpowering, trendy IPAs do. Actually, those 'out of balance beers', could learn a lot from this "little engine that could" IPA.

I know it's written English only. But I do that since years, and it's like poetry. So here it goes, if you don't like it you can delete it. You'll miss dozens of others I will post on this site because it look nice and I just discovered it.

Donc :

Not surprised that Geary's would make an IPA, but what is surprising is that their label looks that of a brown ale. I guees looks are decieving, so this should be good.

A: This beer pours a bright, hazy orange, with a solid 2 in, bright white head.

S: Very powerful citrus aroma up front with an underlyning of pine and apricot. Residual scent consists of some honey and a dash of grapefruit.

T: The flavor starts out with some floral hops and grassy notes. Blended very well with an underlyning of citrus and pine, that finishes sweet with honey sicle and dry yeast.

M: A slight bitter hop bite and tang, but mostly tame and creamy. Does have some slight carbonation and is drinkable as a six pack.

O: Very good IPA by Geary's, not the most bitter in terms of hops, but very well balanced between the citrus and complimentary spices. gearys has a tendancy to make strong beers despite the ABV, and the flavors of this beer make it a drink 1, drink 6!

A: Poured - moderately aggressively - from the bottle into a pint glass. Body is clear amber with a small (half-finger) khaki-colored head. No lacing.

S: Nice - citrusy (grapefruit) and toasted grain. Kind of a cross between an English IPA and an American version.

T: Toasted malt and cereal grains provide the malt tastes, while citrusy hops provide hoppy bitterness and balance. Reminds me of an ESB, really - though the hops are just a wee bit too "juicy" to make this a perfect version of an ESB. Call it an American ESB and you have the idea. I like. Touch of spice/heat at the finish, slight lingering (lemony) bitterness.

M: Light-to-medium in heft. Carbonation is modest, but there.

O: Good stuff. Pleasantly surprised by this one.

Appearance: Clear, darker gold color with one finger of head that fades quickly with little lacing.

Aroma: a lot of caramel malt, especially for an IPA. Just a hint of of resinous hops and a bit boozy/ medicinal.

Taste: A nice, medium bodied malt base with a lot of caramel malt sweetness, followed by some non- descript bitterness towards the back end. Finish is pretty clean with some phenolic notes.

The Rest: Not the best IPA I've had, but if you had told me this was an APA, I would have said it was pretty good. It's lacking in the hops department, but is quite drinkable

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep golden brown color, with a soft off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains caramelized malts, earthy hops and some citrus.

T: The taste starts out with mildly sweet flavors of caramel and a little citrus that are quickly followed by a strong but not over-powering grassy hops bitterness. The mal character is hearty. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, this is a solid EIPA to drink for a while.

True to form, Gear'y English IPA is exactly what it says it is. The beer pours a nice clear copper with virtually no head or lacing. The smell is malt and bittering hops. The taste is bitter with notes of sour. The mouthfeel is medium to light in body and even carbonation. Overall it is drinkable, but there are just some many other beers out there.
