This is one of the first true competitors for the Rauchbier Urbock by Aecht Schlenkerla I have ever tasted.
The tatse is not as punchy smokey but rather more subtle and multilayered. There is a slightly more prevalent sweetness which I like and this is very well balanced by the smokiness.
The mouthfeel and drinkability are very good!

On-tap at the Mikkeller pub in Copenhagen.
Pours a hazy dark copper color with a one-finger off-white head. The head recedes into a patchy layer on top leaving solid lacing.
Smells of loads of smoked malts backed by sweet caramel malts and hints of earthy hops.
Tastes similar to how it smells. Smoked malt flavors kick things off and are shortly sweetened by good amounts of caramel malt flavors. Midway through the sip the sweetness is mildly tempered with the addition of earthy hop flavors that carry through to a mildly bitter ending. Smoked malt flavors linger on the palate after the sip.
Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with moderate carbonation.
Drinkability is also good. I finished my glass without any problems and could have another.
Overall I believe this is the biggest pure smoked beer that I've had. I have to say I prefer the smaller versions of the style but this take is certainly an interesting one and worth a shot if you see it around.

Presented as a rauch-doppelbock.
The liquid is a bit cloudy; the colour is red-orange. The small head is warm white. Some lacing occurs.
The smell is dominated by a sweet flavour of smoke, reminding of smoked ham. Hints of clean hops. It is elegant, yet a little simple.
The taste is sweet and very malty. Smoke and a touch of mint and white pepper. A quickly passing hoppy note with a German twist (some flowers). Dry somewhat bitter flavours in the aftertaste with notes of smoked sausages and cheese. The finish is surprisingly light with a tart touch.
The carbonation is fresh with small bubbles. The liquid is smooth and a bit sticky.
A fresh and not overly sweet doppelbock with a pleasant very German smoked flavour.
