Deep ruby red brew that keeps frothy, with specialty malts dominating the aroma.
Flavor of malts, caramel blend with hops to create a balanced profile that's interestingly pleasing and insists on another sip. Full bodied great taste this beer is truly a memorable experience.

appearance- crystal clear, deep mahogany red, almost no head and dissapears quickly with no lace
smell- very sweet malt aroma, with big fruity notes. no hops noticeable
taste- follows the nose, big sweet upfront smooth..not much carbonation. syrupy flavor lingers, a little fruity like sour apple, cant taste any hint of alcohol, but definately feel it after the first few sips.
mouthfeel- semi-full body, gets thicker as it warms
overall- this is a nice beer, great for someone who is looking for a huge malt lager...i little too sweet for my taste and the hop flavor just isnt there, but still a worthy beer for sweeter beer drinkers.

750 mL bottle, allowed to warm some and split wth my cousin, My half was poured into my Brooklyn Brewery tulip.
Wagner Valley Sled Dog Trippel Bock pours a deep brown. It turns cherry and has lighter red highlights shining through when well backlit though. There's about a finger and a half of head, light tan colored foam. Retention is good, but lacing is basically nonexistent. The nose is very heavy on toffee and caramel, but there's also a bit of dark fruit to the aroma as well. The flavor also has a lot of caramel to it, with a solid underpinning of plums and figs. There's also a warming alcohol sensation that wasn't hinted at in the aroma, and is a pleasant addition. The beer stumbles just a bit in the mouthfeel. The carbonation is appropriately understated, but the body isn't nearly full and big enough for such a high octane, malt forward beer. Wagner Valley's Trippel Bock is a tasty beer, but it doesn't come close to measuring up to the best big bocks out there.

2007 Vintage Sampled at the brewery. Normally I wouldn't review a sample, but I had my 4oz sample, and after a sip each I received four more 4oz samples from the rest of my group. Not exactly a crowd pleaser. I'm glad someone else was driving.
Sled Dog Triple Bock has a burnt orange body that borders on a light shade of brown. Almost no head. A ton of very clumpy yeast floats around.
The aroma has tons of malt. Sweetness, toffee, caramel, bits of chocolate. A bit of cardboard lingers in the background.
I had high hopes for this beer, and I've been thinking about picking up a bottle for a while, but never got around to it. Sadly, I'm not a fan, mostly because this bottle is past its prime. The beer leads off with all kinds of malt, and that part of the beer is quite enjoyable. Tons of toffee and some caramel, lots of bready sweetness and light, powdery chocolate. A little bit of fruit is still in there. Next, however, comes a huge load of wet cardboard. I think a younger version, with less oxidation, might be the ticket here. Some warmth comes through in the finish.
Dead carbonation with a medium to heavy body.
This one was hard to like, but I see potential in it; with a year or two of age, this could be an interesting malt bomb.

Bottle shared by jayhawk73. Thanks Jeff!
2008 Vintage
A: This beer appears a burnt orange hue, perhaps slightly dark brown. The head stands in at an eighth inch and leaves some good lacing in its wake.
S: The aroma is pleasant and consists of lager malt, caramels, brown sugar, and toffee.
T: A delicious bock beer. Well balanced and full of flavor, this one is not too sweet or hot. Delectable toffees and sweet breads, along with caramels in soaked in alcohol.
M: Surprisingly smooth and creamy, it seems as though a few years of aging has worked some magic on this beer, though I have no point of reference.
D: Very tasty. I easily consumed my half of the 750 mL bottle. Would definitely drink again.

Another 2004 vintage (courtesy of my fantastic neighbor).
The smell on this beer is extremely lively and pungent. You can definitely pick up hints of the alcohol from the smell. The smell reminds you of a very malty Scotch ale and the taste of the beer does nothing to dispel this initial smell. This deeply hued beer with hints of red has an extremely malty and Scotch-y taste. Damn good stuff. I can't believe someone had the patience to age this beer seven years. Got damn. Also enjoyed the beer with a 5-year old Gouda. Holy smokes.

Review from notes taken on 11/20/10.
Poured into a snifter, this brew appears a perfectly polished clear ruby amber color. A cap of yellowish stained head forms atop. Lace clings to the glass in patches with a thin webbing in spots. A swirl revives the head to a finger's strength that is composed of rather large bubbles.
The smell of this brew is fruity with notes of dark caramel malt. For 10% it carries a very faint indication of alcohol. The nose is fresh and grainy that includes more of a candy sweetness as it warms.
The taste is minorly sweet and candy-like. A nice contrast of caramel malt verse fruity hops. A fresh taste of toasty grain emerges mid palate. The finish tastes very lightly oxidized with an increasing herbal bitterness as the brew warms.
Medium to full feel with this offering as expected for the style. It has a modest level of carbonation. A brew that is quite drinkable and done well for the high abv.

1 pint 9.4 ounce brown glass bottle poured into a tulip glass.
Pours a magnificent deep ruby-mahogany with wonderful clarity and flaunting a massive rocky head of beige foam that fades away slowly to a fat cap, thick curtain-like rings of lace trailing behind the brew as the glass empties. Gorgeous.
Aroma is malty-sweet, with notes of brown sugar and toffee, along with some traces of plum and sweetbread.
Full in body and mildly carbonated, providing a smooth, rich mouthfeel, though not heavy at all. Caramel and toast open things up, mingling with a bit of honey -- Munich malt is very much represented here and hard to mistake, though there is also a touch of roastiness apparent that is difficult to pinpoint. Just enough hop bitterness is present in the middle to balance the malt sweetness, and the hops provide just a hint of grass-like character; dark fruit notes show up toward the rear, with plum and dark cherry sticking out. Finishes very sweet and long, with a seemingly everlasting malt fade on the back of the tongue.
Alcohol is very well-hidden and drinkability is on-par with, if not a little better than, many other Doppelbocks out there -- and that's saying a lot, since this is a so-called "Trippel Bock," a step up from the brewery's standard Doppel and weighing in at a hefty 10% ABV. It's quite a marvel that the alcohol is so subdued, as this is as smooth-drinking as any Doppelbock out there and in many ways virtually identical in character. I'd love to try the brewery's Sled Dog Doppelbock just to see how different the two brews really are. Superb.
Thanks goes out to my wonderful fiancee for thinking of me and picking up this beer while visiting relatives in New York -- I had never even heard of this brewery (or the town) before, and that's saying a good bit. I couldn't have asked for more.

750 ml bottle:
Pours caramel-brown/mahogany with a that head that settles to a wide patch. Trailing lace vanishes.
The smell is of caramel, molasses, nougat, with a subtle earthy spicing. Robust aroma that is strong enough to be very noticeable even at opening of the bottle.
The taste is of caramel/toffee with a hint of molasses. Heavy caramel maltiness, yet not too sweet with an earthy bitterness giving enough balance in the finish. Alcohol comes through with a mild pepper touch, though well-integrated for the high abv level. Finishes clean, as a lager - even a hefty one like this - should.
It has a chewy, yet creamy smooth, full body. Evil-ly smooth, even, with just the right amount of carbonation, lending smoothness but no fizzyness or sharpness.
This is 10% abv? Some peppery alcohol is noticeable, but the malty smoothness makes it deceptively drinkable. Think of a big, big doppelbock - this is it. Caramelly sweet, but with a balanced, clean finish. An enjoyable malty brew!

A-Clear, deep copper with a thin light tan head that held strong and left decent lace.
S-Like a dark chocolate and caramel covered toffe bar! Sweet and luscious with lighter notes of brown sugar and molasses.
T-Sweet caramel, toffee, and dark chocolate. Strong malt sweetness without going overboard. The flavours really blend together nicely into a liquified dessert offering!
M-Medium bodied with a smooth, viscous feel. Enjoyable without being cloying at all. Good lingering flavours.
D-A malt lovers dream. Certainly the best offering from Wagner Valley, beer wise for they make some mighty fine wines too. I am not a huge sweet, malt bomb fan but everything works with this brew without it going off the scale.
