Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Jet black is the only way to describe this. Very intimidating. Like a black hole, I can't see through this at all even if I backlight it. Cool. Nice fine head of dark bubbles, I am used to white heads so it's cool to see a very tan one. Also props to the bottle for listing Fuggles and Willamette hops, I always like to see ingredients.

Smells like it has been burnt. Dark roasted malts, the cliche scent of chocolate or coffee. Kind of like a schwartzbier.

Creamy goodness. Very rich dark malts, a little sweet. Low hopped, the caramel sweetness is more present than the hops, but that's totally fine. Not the overpowering burnt taste I was expecting, this is welcoming and friendly. A complex mix of malts that I can't pin down. Light hops in the aftertaste that you notice the most 10 seconds after your last sip. The only problem is that this is an oatmeal stout, and the oatmeal is barely noticeable, even in the texture.

Mouthfeel is creamy, subdued. Carbonation is mild in a good way. Heavy, rolls around the mouth.

Maybe a little too black and heavy to be a session beer, but excellent one at a time. I was pleasantly surprised, this beer stands out and has backbone without going over the top in any dimension. Recommended, although I wish the oatmeal was more dominant.

Bottle. This was labeled simply as Wagner Valley Oatmeal Stout. Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malt and smoked meats. Flavor is rather sweet (almost fruity), with smoked notes in the background. The sweet and smoked tastes clash a bit too much for me. Odd fruity aftertaste too. In the end, I'm not a fan.

Enjoyed at the Alumni "Pub" at Vasser College in poughkeepsie, NY, this one poured a midnight brown color with a good sized dark tan head and great lacing. The aroma is sour cherry and lots of cider. Very unique with a touch of charcoal. The flavor is lots of mlky charcoal and apple. Sweet raspberry with mild carbonation and middle body. Plenty drinkable. Quite an enjoyable surprise.

Poured into a room temp beer mug and I let it sit for 5 minutes to warm up a little bit.

A - Very dark brown with no light coming through, creamy head.

S - Hints of coffee, cocoa, and molasses

T - It smells a lot sweeter than it actually tastes. Roasted coffee beans are prevalent in the taste. Not a lot of hop flavor, which is good for this beer.

M - Light on carbonation and has a creamy mouthfeel.

D - One maybe two would be sufficient, I wouldnt want to drink more than a couple of these.

Pitch black with a thin chocolate-milk colored head.

Mild aroma of cafe mocha.

Taste is on the plain side, although not in an especially bad way. Moderately dry, mild notes of coffee, mocha, cocoa. Low bitterness, low roastyness.

Fairly smooth, slightly more watery than I'd like. Still, not a bad stout to have a couple of with dinner.

12 oz. bottle poured into a nonic.

Pours a complete midnight black with a nice tan two finger head that quickly dies down to a thin layer. Stickenss is decent, spotty here and there. Smell is a sweet milk chocolate mixed with a nice toasted oat aroma...lots of malt in the nose. Taste is a bit weak. Not a whole lot of flavors there. Basically coffee flavors from start to finish. Not complex by any means. Mouthfeel is fairly light for the style with mild carbonation. Creamy and smooth. Pretty easy to put down but there are definitely better oatmeal stouts out there.

This offering brought back from NY pours a dark black leaving a thin splotchy head. The aroma is tart fruit, which might indicate something is wrong but let’s push on. There is a bit of smoke, chocolate, tart acidic, oats, grainy bready aroma. The taste is actually smooth, has dry bitterness to this beer. Sharp grainy, oat, tartness, followed by chocolate, caramel in the finish. This is a Jekyll and Hyde beer a lot of good qualities but that tartness is not what I expect in my oatmeal stouts. Making this a "so-so" beer.

Pours a very nice looking deep brown to near black colour with a big frothy, yet slight creamy beige head that has good retention time and a fair amount of stickiness to it.

The aroma blends chocolate, roasted malt, some oat notes and a hint of coffee for a nice overall mix.

The flavour is where this one starts to bomb. The balance is way off as flavours are all over the place. Yes, the roasted notes are there, along with some chocolate and oat hints again, but they are hit or miss with each sip and are mixed with some sourness, and an almost metallic raisin-like taste as well. Something is just off here. Mouthfeel is far too light and has a sharpness and overly carbonated feel to it that is not very pleasant.

I was extremely disappointed here. I really enjoy a good oatmeal stout and this just wasn't one. It starts off great: good appearance and a nice aroma, but the first sip is where this one starts to fail. Sorry to say, but stay away from this one.

No light gets through this stout, and the head, while thin, is a nice burnt tan color.

Indeed, it actually smells like crushed oatmeal grains, also some smoke and light on the bitter chocolate.

Flavor is solid...smoky, toffee, nut, coffee, a little chocolate. All mingle together well and give you all the flavors you'd want in this style. Bitter finish, even burnt tasting, but that's good in this case.

Mouthfeel is on the thin side, watery...could've used a little more heft in this area.

This is a good stout to chill out with, nothing too heavy and certainly one that could act as a gateway stout for those who are unsure of this style. Solid stuff.

I liked this a lot. A smoky, chocolatey stout? What's not to like?

Poured a milky brown with a small head into a pint glass. Aroma is very pleasant: chocolate, coffee, tart fruits, some grains, and just a hint of smoke. The smokiness is much more prominent in the flavour, however, and dominates everything but the coffee and the more bitter chocolate notes. Aftertaste is bitter and/or sour, like the aftertaste of a particularly dark roasted coffee.

Very pleasant to drink, and I wish I had more than the one bottle.

Sampled from a 12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass at 45 degress. Thanks to tempest for providing this one!

A - Pours an almost black color with a medium brown/dark tan head that never really changes in size...starts as a small ring, ends the same way.

S - A little weak, but scents of smokey, burnt malt come through.

T - Flavors definitely picked up as it warmed. Roasted malt stays strong throughout, but more smokey notes than I expected. Unsweetened cocoa and a light touch of coffee can be found as well. Too bad for the thinner body, or else this would have been a great oatmeal stout.

M - Just felt too thin for the style. Still a creamy mouthfeel, but finished with a slightly watered down texture. Decent carbonation.

D - A solid performer that I'd love to try fresh, if I ever saw it available. Thanks tempest!

Sampling this beer at room temp poured into a snifter with a dark pitch black color. A thin tan head fades to nothing rapidly. Aroma is some roasted malt and dark fruit with molasses as well. First sip reveals a smooth texture and lighter body than expected. Fine spacious carbonation, but the thin body is a detractor.
Flavor starts with roasted malt and some brown sugar as well. Finishes with a quick bit of roast and then goes empty. This beer is disappointing and not a very good stout. Look elsewhere.

Poured a very deep reddish brown with amble tan head. Good retention and very nice sticky lacing.
Taste is extremely enjoyable with stong notes of coffee, chocolate, dak fruits, and a wine-like sweetness. Nice blend of smells.
Taske is also enjoyable with nice coffee tastes combined wuith the roasted malt.
Finishes sweet and rich in the mouth with excellent taste retention.
One of the best oatmeal stouts I've evere tried. First rate.

Poured a deep black hue with a half finger foamy tan head. There was minimal lacing and decent retention.

The smell featured a rich toasted grain an smoky aroma.

The taste consisted of smoky toasted barley, coffee and light caramel flavors.

The mouthfeel was full and mildly chewy.

Overall a nice oatmeal stout. Very drinkable and unique in its smokiness.

A smoked oatmeal stout - new hybrid to me. Pour black with a light brown head, always a good sign. Smells of rich chocolate. The smoke mixes nicely and isn't over powering in the aroma. Taste of smooth chocolate with smoke. At first I didnt taste the smoke, but as the beer really warmed up, it was undeniable. Basically just a tasty stout here, give it a try.

Nice to see Wagner Valley beers popping up around Buffalo,poured an ink blackno light even held up right next to the light a thinner creamy mocha colored head atop,French roast coffee and bitter chocolate aromas abound even a light nuttiness to boot quite nice.A nice almost fluffy mouthfeel not to thin and not overly full,highly roasted flavors but they dont overstep the boundaries in this beer there is a gentle rolling softness that keeps everything intune a sweeter chocolate flavor glides along for the ride with a hint of wood in the finish.I think a pretty good oatmeal stout quite flavorful and smooth.

A - Black with a relentless thick frothy brown head that leaves a healthy ring of lacing behind.

S - Very mild cacao with some dates and figs. It's quite good, but way, way too weak.

T - A wonderful meshing of sweet chocolatey flavors and burnt malt hit first, followed by a mild burnt bitterness. A pleasant flavor.

M - Thick, frothy, a little high on the carbonation and bit gummy on the mouth.

D - Alright. I don't think I would want to drink more than one of these. It could be called a tad cloying. I like it, but "drinkable" isn't the first word that comes to mind.
