Notes:
This extreme Double Imperial IPA is brewed with American Cascades and English First Gold hops for a deliciously unique hop profile. Bitter, malty, with a definite alcohol note, this beer is one of our most assertive and extreme.

Pours a slightly coppery orange. Big bubbles create a one third inch of off-white foam.
Dank grapefruit, surprisingly malty aroma. Lots of pine resin to the nose.
Tastes is surprisingly sweet. Lots of caramel, malt is very forward. Some mandarin orange slices mix their way in. Some bready, slightly unpleasant acrid soap aftertaste. Only real downside to an otherwise very pleasant flavor. Minor burnt pine can be detected.
Needs more carbonation.

A - Impressive orange\amber pour. Cloudy, and with a high white foam. Sticky lacing webs the tulip glass.
S - Scent of fresh pine, flowers, and an interesitng blend of hops. It is certainly different.
T - There is some initial sweetness, but it quickly changes to a medley of a bitter hoppy bite. This is a treat for true hop-heads.
M - Sticky feel that coates the tongue. Hoppy feel is intense, but did get a little tired.
O - Enjoyable DIPA that paired well with spicy food. Worth trying but is not quite on par with the noteworthy west coast examples of this style.

Poured from a growler into my La Fin du Monde tulip.
As advertised, this brew is a translucent hue of gold and apricot, with a sizable half-inch off-white head that leaves a ton of caked-on lacing. It's really a very pretty beer, and I almost don't want to drink it, but I must, for science! The nose is quite hoppy, with an undertone of grapefruit and grassy pine. Sweet caramelized malts appear after the initial barrage of hops, along with a very minimal tinge of booze on the back end.
A slightly sweetish note to start on the initial sip, which is quickly quenched by a big blast of hoppy bitterness. I've had bitterer brews before, but this is definitely living up to its touted description. Notes of pine resin and quite a bit of citrus accentuate the bitterness and provide a smooth contrast to the subdued, but substantial malt character. Booziness is detectable on the finish, but doesn't really detract from the drinkability, thanks in part to a lush, near-full-bodied mouthfeel. Carbonation is just-so, enough to support the tenuous spiciness.
After having had Altered Beast by the same brewery, Mach 10 was up against some admittedly stacked odds. And while it didn't exactly come close to matching its tastier brother, it is still a very, very good beer that hopheads and bitterbombers will enjoy very much.

A - Hazy amber, nice off white head, low carbonation, head fades to a covering quickly and leaves some lacing.
S - Light citrus and alcohol.
T - Boozy, alcohol up front and throughout. The citrus hops are there, but not a whole lot of hop flavor when compared to the bitterness and the alcohol. There is a bit of sweet caramel malt flavor in the middle, but finishes with alcohol.
M - Nice moderate body, that ends resinous and bitter. Some carbonation would help clean it up.
O - I love Bear Republic, I do not love this beer. Could really use some more hop aroma and flavor. I can forgive the carbonation because it was a growler...carbonation is also dependent on the server. Not their best beer or a great example of an American IIPA.

Had on tap at the ginger man in NYC- poured a slightly hazy golden orange color with a half finger white head; decent retention and a tiny bit of lacing.
Smell is very enticing- I smell piney hops and black tea (not unsimilar to sorachi ace). Nice bready malt sweetness with a bit of warming alcohol on the waY down. Excellent taste and perfectly balanced.
Surprisingly quaffable- good medium body with moderate carbonation. Buy if you find it!!

Had this on 3/2/12 at Gourmet Haus Staudt.
Never seen a DIPA that looks like this one - a hazy golden orange that looks thick like mango nectar and glows in the light. Looks beautiful topped with a finger of dense head and lively carbonation, good lacing.
Smells of concentrated citrus: orange marmalade, grapefruit rind, mango, melon, and some dank & floral notes. A bit of light breadiness and the ABV is hardly noticeable at all up front.
Hard to pinpoint but there is definitely something unique going on with the malt and hop bill. Lots of citrus like grapefruit, apricot and peaches mix with earthy and spicy English style hops and a notable amount of English-inspired malt - light bready and cracker notes with a bit of subdued sweetness.
Malt is even more evident in the mouth - sweet and creamy at first in a way that makes it more filling than a typical DIPA, but it still finishes fairly dry and with a lingering bitterness that you feel on the tongue, but not sticky at all. ABV becomes more evident after it warms but doesn't ever detract from the experience.
A really interesting DIPA that blends west coast and English character into a compelling experience. A big bitter beer that is utterly drinkable and refreshing, it took some effort to pace myself because I was enjoying it so much! Hope this makes it into a bottle one day soon.

Had on tap at The Gingerman, NYC:
A: Nice looking, dark IPA, modest head and lacing.
S/T: This is perhaps the booziest and maltiest of all the Bear Republic Imperial IPAs that I've had to date. It was almost like an American version of an English-style barleywine, given the huge presence of the West Coast hops.
M: Nice, creamy body. Relatively middle of the road.
O: Unlike anything I've ever had before from Bear Republic, but still a winner. It was not what I was expecting, given the the Racer X, Apex, and their others, but I think it serves a place in the BR library.

Had a mug at the Blue Tusk in Syracuse. Yes, it's hoppy and malty, but not hoppy enough for a DIPA. I guess I'd call it more of a blond American barleywine. The barley felt thick, even for a 9% beer, and wasn't particularly distinct. It was more of an overly-sweet caramel bread with a little toast. The hops don't stand out enough. The spicy citrus hops are balanced on par with a pale ale. Even if there's 100+ IBU, they're getting lost. I shouldn't get too down on this beer, it's tasty and something different for the style. I just want less sugar and more hops.

A - poured with a small head of white foam on top of a hazy golden body. The head settles fairly quickly and leaves dense lace.
s - sweet malt and fruity hops. Notes of grapefruit, orange, pine and blackberry.
T - thick malt up front with lots of fruity hops. Notes of pineapple, grapefruit, and pine in the middle. More sweet malt and pungent hops as the finish washes over the palate with strong bitterness.
M - medium thick body, average carbonation, and a slightly sweet finish.
D - very good, complex hop character, lots of malt to balance. Despite the high IBUs, it is balanced and quite drinkable.
