Pour is a murky muddy deep brown with thin off white head which fades almost instantly.

Nose is rather sweet, with hints of caramel, sour cherry, peat moss, cedar and a little booze.

taste is also surprisingly sweet. Lots of caramel up front with hints of moss, and maybe a little touch of vanilla. Follows with a nice but simple boozy malt, nice basic scotch flavors are pronounced and linger.

Feel is medium, a little thinner than I would prefer for this style.

Surprisingly good. Would maybe even be cellar able for a year or so and improve. Better out there, but totally worth a look.

Been holding onto this one for a little while, and with power out it was a good warming beer, but power just came back on... but I'll try it anyways.

Pours a darker brown fizzy head covering that disappears fairly quickly, over dark molasses cola brown color with a little mahogany light sneaking through.

Nose is interesting, plenty of dark reddish malts, sweet, caramel, candy syrup, dark molasses, chewy malts, hint of booze, light biscuit malt, almost barleywine sweetness, hint of toffee, touch of chocolate covered caramels, and just a bit of an earthy like hop.

Taste starts semi sweet and rich, little creamy even like creamed caramels, some candy reddish malts, plenty of toffee and caramel, little molasses even, with some caramel chews candy like. A hint of a darker malt but not much, little bitterness from some earthy hops but very little. Booze follows the sweetness and rich malts with a touch of phenol and a bit warming. It also brings a touch of fig and and just a bit nutty. Finish is still fairly sweet, little more toffee and even a little coffee syrup, chewy malts, caramel, toffee, touch smokey even.

Mouth is med to fuller bodied, rich, little syrupy, some warming just a bit tingly booze, lighter carb.

Overall not bad, decent overall flavors between malts, fruits, booze, candy flavors, etc. Not very drinkable but that's not really the plan for this one. But overall tasty.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a reddish color and a hazy consistency. There was a half inch of foamy head that quickly dissipated. Not a whole lot of lacing.

S: A decent aroma of roasted malt, caramel, and some hops.

T: Tasted of caramel, roasted malt, chocolate, dark fruit, and grassy hops in the finish. Not a bad flavor - it almost seems more like a barleywine than a Scotch Ale - but doesn't quite push hard enough.

M: A fair amount of carbonation with a super dry finish. Medium-bodied.

O: On the whole, a solid enough beer, but could have been a little better. Still, a drinkable brew.

12oz bottle into a Duvel tulip.

A: Deep chestnut body under a finger of creamy tan head. Good retention, light lace. Pretty nice.

S: Pleasant mixture of chocolate, toffee, dark fruit, and a hint of smoke. Quite good.

T: Opens with sweet and roasty chocolate malt, followed by some spicy booze and finished with caramelized prunes. A little harsh on the finish, but generally pretty tasty.

M: Slightly sticky full body with lots of lively carbonation. Quite a mouthful, which suits the style.

O: Good, but not quite great. I like the chocolate and spice, but the booze and overripe fruit is distracting.

Cheers!

Served on-tap in a 12-oz. brandy snifter glass at Max Burger's CT Tap Takeover in West Hartford, Conn.

A: Poured a very dark, near-brown amber color with a two-finger head of off-white foam that left some patchy lacing on the brew and walls of the glass. Nice ruby highlights adorn the edges of the glass' bottom.

S: Rich, deep and robust aroma of wet tobacco leaves, floral, fruity esters and a complexity of dark fruits meshed with cocoa nibs and roasted caramel.

T: Excellent blend of roasted malts that allow fruity esters to permeate the rich, smoky sweetness of this strong ale. Caramel and mild chocolate flavors meld into the tobacco leaf and array of dried figs, plum and raisins. A subtle, earthy hop flavor cleanses the palate a bit before washing back with a boozy, slightly bitter warmth.

M: Full-bodied ale with a little malt chewiness and boozy heat that flickers against the palate along with a delicate hop pull and slick malt resin.

O: A very nice, deep-sipping Wee Heavy more suitable for the cool evenings of fall and early winter. The 8.5% ABV is warming, especially given the complexity of fruity and earthy malt flavors at play. The flavor does let up at a few points on the palate, but remains quite tasty and drinkable throughout.

Found on tap at Trio’s restaurant in Narragansett, Rhode Island and served in a proper big bowled snifter, this is a dark, murky brown colored ale with a modest tan head that immediately breaks to a firm ring with decent lacing. The nose picks up thick coffee chocolate with a beautiful sweet spruce mintiness, almost a creme de menthe to brandy idea that is very attractive in my book. I can’t add much else, just nice stuff. The flavor strikes me as considerably pared down from what the aroma suggested, focussing on the brandy side of the equation with a very grainy-malt background. It’s a solidly medium bodied brew with fine carbonation and a drinkable quality, aqueous but “bright” feel. I pick up plenty of dark fruits, currant, prune, honey and more spruce oriented hop bite. The complexity really improves as it warms and breathes. This is a very nice surprise from Cotrell. Well done!

A. Pours dark brown and sits dark brown/black in the glass. Smaller white head with smaller retention and almost no lacing. Not much lively carbonation.

S. Big dark fruits and malt. Lots of raisin and currant along with a subtle chocolate and roasted malt. slight phenol scent but low key. Smells okay.

T. Follows the nose pretty well. Big time raisin and darker sweet malts. Toffee and caramel as well. This is pretty sweet and dark fruits dominate. Think run soaked raisin but lacking depth.

M. Medium feel with a slightly heavier viscosity. Carbonation is pretty light. Drinks pretty nice for a scotch.

O. Pretty nice Scotch. Nothing really stood out bit I nice scotch I have never seen nonetheless.

12 ounce bottle poured into my pint glass.

Pours chocolately dark brown with with a smidge of white foam at the top. Malty peaty smell and a touch of pine. Taste is quite hearty with an earthy/dirty/peaty mouthfeel. Whisky/bourbonish finish. Loads of flavor, very hearty.
