A- This beer pours an opaque jet brown body with a faint glow of dark brown at the very base. There is a sticky thin light beige head that leaves rings as I sip.

S- The rich sweet smell of dark fresh wort has some dried leave notes in the finish.

T- The rich full malt flavor has a mellow breakfast blend coffee malt note underneath with lots of fresh wort flavors and some dark cola notes in the finish. This beer is a bit sweet in the finish but it does have some lagered characteristics. Some roasted black malt hints come though but they don’t have any bitterness to them.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with no alcohol heat and a thick texture in the finish.

O- This beer is tasty but a bit like carbonated wort, but much better than malta. The fresh malt flavors are nice but a bit too sweet to drink by the leader.

Pours a charcoal grey with rusty copper tints, moderate cap of off-white head. Scent lead by chocolate, semi-sweet, some notes of roast appear, mineral water, as scent mellows, a strong dark lager base is found. Taste follows suit, lots of flavor in this beer, chocolate and roast a bit stronger than others in style, nice mineral quality. Medium bodied. Solid Schwarz, slightly bigger than others in style but still enjoyable.

500mL swing top bottle. no cap at all, just the rubber swing top seal.

appears black in color, with garnet highlights in the corners of the glass. cream colored 1/2" thick head. good retention.

aroma of bready yeast and complex dark malt. chocolate, lots of raisin. in the taste, the malt flavors are not as intense as the smell, more muted. maybe some earthy hop flavors are in there. light to medium thickness. smooth carbonation, drinks easy.

overall - a bit more flavor than most beers I've previously had in this style. but good!

Innstadt Extra Schwarze Original

LOOK: Swing top bottle. Pours a ruddy deep brown color with a chill haze but otherwise decent clarity. Large mocha creme head forms and has excellent staying power and lace.

SMELL: Very malty upfront with suggestions of chocolate, bitter coffee, bread and a yeasty twang. There is a faint touch of hops.

TASTE: Prominent toasted malt, chocolate bread, char, and somewhat sweet. Low level of hops. The yeast gives it a light tang, which prevents the beer from becoming overly sweet. Big time chocolatey, nutty, and bready characteristics. Soft alcohol and little bitterness.

FEEL: Medium bodied, full flavored dark lager. Delicate carbonation at a medium level, malty finish.

OVERALL: The Innstadt Schwarz is a very good example of the dark lagers becoming increasingly more popular in Germany. Well rounded flavor and a solid choice.

Very malty nose and slightly sweet initially, this is a beer packed with flavor. At only 5%, it's sessionable if the chocolate toast doesn't get you first. Krugels in Wilkes-Barre has a good line on the Innstadt brand and this and the Doppel were a good choice during our mild winter. It's the hottest day of the year today and it's still going down well.

Pours a really really deep chestnut brown. A tall tan fluffy head is produced when poured into a glass of some sort. I really didn't take notice of any carbonation. I forgot.
As far as schwarze goes very rich and malty with a slight roasted malt asppect and molasses hints.
Taste is rich and velvetty with a deep malty taste with hints of roasted malts and molasses. It drinks on the fuller side of medium with a clean finish. I picked this up on a wim at the beer store and I'm glad i did, it's a fantastic example of a schwarzebier. You can read extra here as imperial. The beer drank smooth and with a big full flavor. You could throw in some pumpernil too in there. Compare it to an Einbecker.

A - Super deep dark brown body, almost black. The head is big and beige and hangs around for a while, sticking to the glass the whole way.

S - Alot of roasty, grainy sweetness in the nose. Tangy and yeasty also. A nice meal-like smell.

T - Touches of honey on earthy dark bread. Toasted dark bread with roasted grain. Honey-like malt sweetness, notes of molasses.

M - Very smooth and clean on the mouth. Medium bodied like a Scwarzbier should be and tons of flavor likewise.

O - This was recommended to me by one of the bartenders at my favorite Brauhaus and it was a homerun. I love schwarzbiers and this one is my favorite so far.

500 ml flip-top picked up at Tres Bonne Cuisine.. I thinking I paid about $4.50.. Poured into my smaller weizen glass...

big 3 finger head leaves great lace... tons of lace... the brew is crystal clear "black".. only shows clarity when held to a bright kitchen light and then only the deepest deep ruby shows.

The nose is a very clean Schwarzbier.. dark malts are the headliner... a little toasty malts help bring a needed sweetness..

Flavor mirrors the nose pretty much perfectly with a bit more maltiness mid palate that drains into a bit of coffee astringency and then trails off as expected.. this is a super clean black lager... and there is no doubt where it comes from.. some nutty/chocolate nibs show as it hits room temperature... but the brew is pretty much gone at that point... Very satisfying.. The body is exactly where it should be.. so is the carbonation.. this tastes very fresh and I am impressed with the German brews coming through TBC..

Clear brown lager with a good deep tan colored head. Beautiful ruby hues when held up to the light.

Smells malty and grainy with a slight grassy scent. Slight chocolate and toffee aromas but this beer is under scented.

Starts out malty with a coffee flavor ending with bread and yeast aftertaste. Toasted rye bread flavor and a slightly charred taste. Solid bitterness to this one mix of hops and patent malt.

Mouthfeel is OK.

OK drinkable beer, but I have to rate this one as just average in drinkability.

Nice 500 ml (a little extra in the bottle!) flip top. Saw it on the shelf at Perfect Pour. I never pass up any German import in a flip top with the word "Schwarze" on it. Fan of the style, I don't think I'd classify it as a true Schwarzbier, but it's much more than a Dunkel. Gorgeous black in the glass with mahogany highlights. The foam in the pour--even when done carefully from the bottle--was ridiculous. It looked like a stout when finished, but the foamy head disappeared after the first few sips and left a really nice lacing on the glass. Definite roasted malt in the nose with little else (a good thing) and the initial taste was refreshing deep roasted malt with a hint of coffee and chocolate notes, then a bit of hops scent in the nose with a slightly sweet, slightly bitter finish. No alcohol astringent taste, no metallic or cardboard. Very fresh tasting and really drinkable. I went through the whole bottle a bit more quickly than I thought and for me (a lightweight), it warmed rather quickly inside. Great stuff. I've never seen it before. Glad I found it! A bit steep ($4 for the bottle), but worth a try.

Found in a Moscow grocery store, the tall brown half liter bottle has a short neck, a swing top, and a gold on black label a tiny etching of Passau above the name, and not much else. Purity law applies. Best before 11/14/06, I opened it on 5/5/06.

Pours a clear burgundy-brown under a rich, thick 3 finger light brown head that settles quite slowly and leaves excellent lacing. The nose is very fruity, of plum or dark grape. There's malt here too, slightly sweet but mostly bready. The mouth is light and quite prickly, with just a bit of stickiness. Mild, smooth flavor throughout, starting with a touch of sour from the grape. Caramel is here, too, adding a sweet side. And the hops don't get cheated, leaving a mild espresso dryness in the finish. An unspectacular, but generally quite pleasing brew.
