Appearance: Pours a dark brown color, but not nearly black. Lots of ruby hints around the edges. Not much head to speak of or lacing. What head there is is a very light brown hue.
Smell: Smells of biscuity malts, a kind of berry like sweetness, and some light chocolate and roast notes as well. Very interesting.
Taste: Very dry initially with biscuity malts coming through. Some dark fruit flavors come through after that, think blackberries. Roast and dark chocolate are far in the background. It's pretty simple all in all, but I like it a lot. Pretty good in its simplicity.
Mouthfeel/Overall: Lighter bodied and very easy drinking. Extremely sessionable. I wish I had access to this beer all of the time. Has a lot of flavor for the ABV. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts for this beer.

Brenda and I stopped in at Big Sky long enough to realize there was nothing there for us.. so we immediately skipped across Missoula to Bayern... I love this place.. and I love the beers and the styles they brew.. that said.. this is the first time I've stopped in and the Schwarzbier was on tap.... I had a pint while the man behind the bar filled a growler for me.
Standard pint glass filled pretty much to the top.. what head was there was a khaki tan .. the brew is BLACK .. that is until I hold it up to the nearby window and a beautiful burnished walnut is revealed... very clear... and very pretty.
Aroma is continental.. I would if given blind expect this to come from Germany... very clean roasty and slightly toasty maltiness... rich with only the slightest whaffs of coffee..
Flavor is fantastic too.. slight malty sweetness combines seamlessly with roasted malts.. lite chocolate is apparent as it warms.. sorta nutty with a hit of dark rye crust... not really getting any hoppiness... but this brew is a benchmark for the American interpretation.. very very clean and very drinkable even on a warm summer evening.. the body is lite and the carbonation is prickly leading toward me wanting another pint.. but alas.... I have to take off... onward to Kettlehouse.

Had this beer in the tap room on a beer tasting trip to Missoula. It has prompted me to return twice and get it in growlers. The color is a real black color with deep reddish brown edges when held to the light. The nose is of roasted grain and maybe a little dark chocolate. Flavor is a melding of malt sweetness balanced with a roast and hop bitterness, that still manages to keep that refreshing lager quality. Mouthfeel is spot on lager, crisp, clean and refreshing. Overall this is a beer I would order and order again . . . . and again . . . and again . . . and again.

Stopped at the brewery on my way through Montana and had to try this one.
A : A very nice black color with a decent tan head.
S : Very light aroma, hints of roasted malts, some sweetness to it
T : Nice light flavor to it with roasted malts note. A little bit of hop bitterness on the finish. Exactly what I would expect from a schwarzbier
M : Light, crisp, and refreshing
D : Real easy to drink. Too bad it's not bottled and available in Texas

This is probably my favorite brew from Bayern. Darker than the other brews (obviously) there is a light berry sweet aroma with a roasted rye-like flavor imbedded in it. This beer is very smooth and the flavors meld perfectly.
