This attractive brew splits the difference between the familiar NW hefe and the beloved Bavarian original. It's a ripe, fruity orange and a sturdy white head that doesn't blossom as much as a Bavarian but is still a good size. The aroma is waxy, yeasty, slightly off but not at all unpleasant. There's also some bright citric hop flavors that let you know this was made in the US. The taste has wonderful composition, and is totally united without any flailing off-flavors or struggling elements that come short. Everything is here and it's rounded and refreshing. Grapefruit hops lead off, followed by a cookie-sweet malt base, with the yeast and wheat providing a supple, almost oaky-Chardonnay quality. It's very drinkable. A very good hefe; it does not manage to become the oft-attempted-but-nearly-never-succeeded craft American copy of a German, but it's got a bit more going on than most of the Pac NW hefes. It's a fine and likable beer.

Picked up for $14.88 as part of a mixed 12 pack picked up on 9-2-11 at Wolds Valley Market in Seeley Lake, MT. Assembled on 7-18-11. Reviewed from notes made 9-4-11.

Beer poured golden-orange with a large head that left lacing behind.

Nose was wheaty on initial pour but nothing more even after warming up.

Taste was wheaty but lacking hefe yeast character.

Mouthfeel was light with good carbonation, refreshing.

Overall a nice refreshing summer beer.

Appears hazy orange with a thin white head.

It smells of wheat, and a little like cloves. Not much going on in the smell.

It tastes of slightly crisp wheat. There is a slight citrus flavor and a bit of a clove flavor. This is a pretty basic non-complex hefe.

The mouthfeel is somewhat crisp.

Overall this is an ok Hefe, but it lacks complexity and substantial flavor. It goes down easy though.

Appearance has a cloudy golden orange with a pretty thick head and having a lot of bubbles clinging to the side of the glass. Smell and taste of wheat thats a very noncomplex Hefeweizen with minimal spice leaving a cloying light bitter aftertaste. Mouthfeel light with good carbonation. Nothing too exiting, just a fair Hefewiezen.

12oz picked up in Lewistown Montana... Poured into the closest thing I could find to a pint glass at Brenda's parent's house.

1" head is rocky and sticks around for quite a while... the brew is not as hazy as most hefes.... lite orangey golden color.

Nose is pretty standard American take on the style... maybe a tad light... mildly clovey with a little more banana..

Flavor has more clove than the aroma.. wheaty and sorta bready throughout with a touch of banana on a fairly short and a little dry finish... the body is light and the carbonation is prickly.

Not bad certainly.. sorta like a "hefeweizen lite".... I gave this to a bunch of Brenda's Pop's farmer buddies and it was quite a hit with them... sooo... I guess it would be a pretty good gateway beer to German styles.

12 oz bottled poured into a weizen glass.

Nice looking brew. Cloudy golden body with a bright white cloudy head. Not as fluffy as I'd like, but not bad at all. Retention and lacing are good.

This is a pretty solid little hefeweizen. The nose is to style, but fairly tame. Flavors get a little livelier. Plenty of wheat with a lemony bite around the edges. Cloves are subtly present, banana even moreso. Kind of a general spiciness I can't quite put my finger on, too. Mouthfeel is fairly thick and fluffy. Goes down easy on a sunny afternoon.

Poured into a weizen glass:

Pours clouded lemon-drop yellow with a frothy white head that thins and stays through the duration. Trailing lace sticks.

The smell is of wheat tang with a hint of tart lemon. Not very banana/clove, but with some floral and slight spicing. Smells like an American wheat with a Continental leaning.

The taste is of wheat dough/bread, with a hint of lemon. Again, not much banana, but there is a clove spicing in the refreshingly dry, crisp, though rather abrupt, finish.

It is light-bodied and crisp.

A decent summer refresher that is, again, more of an American Pale Wheat with a Continental influence. For that, I think it's not a bad brew at all.

when i was young i used to do bottle drives with the boy scouts. all i remember is the smell of the un rinsed beer bottles. it was disgusting sweet rancid smell. this beer tastes kinda like the bottles smelled. there was little carbonation ~.1cm head. the smell was very sweet, a little tangy. i had almost no smell of clove or bananna. in the glass it was a nice orange -straw color and very clear. all i taste is wheat with a little pique of what might be hops.

is this beer just a wheat based lager? if so it isnt nearly as good as the one i had had bohemian in slc. is there clove in this beer, or is my mind playing tricks on me?

overwhelmingly wheat flavor lead to thoughts of pouring the glass. 25 minutes into this review i am a quarter of the way through a 12 oz bottle. ive had 2 bottled and 1 tap bayern product. the taped beer was amazing, the bottles were both dissapointing. is it the store i purchased them from, or the brewery?

way too many question marks in this review.

Ok, despite what some reviewers here have said, this does not taste like a wit. This is pure Hefeweizen in every respect, I get no citrus overtones at all. This is a good Hefeweizen from Bayern and to be honest I have not found a bad beer from this brewery. Nothing exceptional but just good beer.

This beer pours a cloudy yellow, with a good head. There is not a lot of intense smells with this one just pretty typical. Taste is pleasant but not overpowering. Drinkability is exceptional. A good Hefeweizen

Bottle best before date of October '05.

Poured a medium and cloudy golden color with an averaged sized white head. Aromas of yeast, light wheat, and if I really push some banana in the background. Tastes of wheat, light lemons, light oranges, light bananas and light spices (get the trend - everything on the lighter side).

Not my idea of a Hefe, more like a Belgian Witbier akin to Hoegaarten or something.

A= zero head, or so minimal that it disappeared after seconds. A few bubbles clinging to the sides of the glass down in the liquid, no lacing whatsoever.

S= modest nice citrus-floral with wheat, not very exciting for us.

T= very dry, yeasty and a slight bit sour-tart, akin as I said above more to a Witbier than a Hefeweizen. Modest citrus.

M= some hops florals and hops-bite in the aftertaste.

D= I couldn't take much of this. In fact, I got it when the other person (who is a major Hefe-fan) took one sip after we watched it pour, and they handed it to me.

A: Pours a cloudy yellow color, 2 finger width white head. Good head retention down the glass
S: Smell is very yeasty. Wheat smell is very abundant, slight lemon smell. Not picking up much banana though
T: Wheat/fruity/lemon slight clove taste and a dry finish
M: Smooth and easy drinking, carbonation is perfect
D: Not often do I get this excited about a wheat beer, really not my style usually, however I could drink this stuff all night long. This is an awesome beer.

A 12 oz bottle from Liquid Solutions.

A: The weizen is a slightly hazy golden yellow color, showcasing the occasional orange note. The head was close to one finger and has dissapated to a small white band.

S: The aroma is wheaty, wholly devoid of any clove or banana esters. This, based on aroma alone, makes me look at this as an American pale wheat ale.

T: The ale continues the restrained wheat flavor that I found in the nose. The ale has a light tart wheat flavor that is somewhat grainy but finishes with a surprising strength.

M: The beer fits into the American pale wheat classification, IMHO. The wheat is refreshing and slightly tart on the palate.

D: I could drink a few of these. They are light though and lack the weizen esters.

AKA: Bayern "St. Wilbur Weizen" - listed on their website as a "Bavarian Hefeweizen", ABV 5.1%. Picked up this 12 oz. bottle for 75 cents(!) from the New Seasons clearance bin. Best Before: Feb 07.

A: Poured to a pint glass rather vigorously by my lovely wife, this one's huge frothy white head gushed over the top of the glass. Cresting at 4 fingers+, this was one of the nicest looking hefes I've enjoyed. After a swirl and mixing of the sludgy yeast coating the base of the bottle, this took on a nice fuzzy golden-wheat color. Lace was fairly weak - otherwise, this may have received a '5'...

S: Appealing aroma of wheat mixed with a healthy dose of lemon. Grassy, a little herbal, and yeasty. Not the esters of a German Hefe but still a fine-smelling beer.

T: Quite dry, with dominant flavors of lemon and pepper beyond the full wheat flavors. Nothing very sweet in here; in fact the finish is medicinally bitter and even a little soapy.

M: Nice medium-full body with moderate carbonation, a more substantial mouthfeel than the few other US versions I've tried. Lemony flavor helps keep the mouthfeel crisp & clean, though the finish suffers just a little from that bitter/soapy aftertaste.

D: I'm glad to have tried this, a nice American version of a hefeweizen. It's pretty drinkable (generally tasty & low ABV per the style), goes well with food (tried with po-boys, shrimp & oyster) & is one I wouldn't mind having again.

St. Wilbur pours a cloudy, yellow gold body beneath a good-sized head of bright-white that holds up quite well and leaves some very nice lacing throughout the entire glass. The aroma is mainly of wheat-malt and fruit with limited greenish banana. The body is medium-light, and it's zesty, and creamy as it warms. The flavor is of a fruity-accented wheat malt with a very light banana and just a suggestion of clove. It's phenolic, but in a different way from many others, and not as sweet as some of the big producers. A touch of spiciness is present, and some floral hops find their way in as well, which is nice. Balanced! Dryish. The finish is refreshing with a touch of hop bitterness. An excellent choice.
