Murky dark brown with a brief white head. Aroma is heavy with sugars, yeast, caramel malt and well-pronounced banana. Flavor is consistent with the smell as the banana and yeast are very prominent. There's also a light roasted malt component and a touch of lemon tartness. Finish is long and heavy on the sugars and yeast. The body has a medium feel with moderate carbonation that is a bit prickly. Sweetness limits drinkability somewhat.

While it's no Aventinus, this a solid beer and as best I can tell, a pretty authentic Weizenbock. Maybe just a little more malt to balance that sweetness, but this beer definitely grows on me the more I drink it.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a standard pint glass. The bottle has a freshness date of May 2013 (reviewed on April 16).

Appearance: pale reddish brown with a 1/8 inch tan colored head with minimal lacing. Thin strands of carbonation rising to the surface. Lovely swirls as the head recedes- reminiscent of a spiral galaxy or a caramel roll.

Smell: malty, fruity with a hint of apple. Quite subdued, with barely a hop aroma.

Taste: Malt bomb, baby! Deliciously complex, with herbal spice, subdued bitterness. The aftertaste is of spice, warming alcohol, maybe a little brown sugar, and a slight bit of sourness. Possibly some diacetyl. The hops are present, but allow the natural sweetness and bitterness of the malt to come through.

Mouthfeel: Crispness, lingering, even down into the throat, giving a brief feeling of fullness in the stomach.

Overall: I've been drinking Bayern beer since the 80s, and have never been disappointed. This genuine brewmeister makes the best lagers in this region, hands down- and perhaps in the entire country.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a weizen glass in high elevation Libby, Mont. Reviewed live.

A- Two finger light brown head, small bubbles, but a fluffy head. Decent retention, chocolate brown color with high clarity considering the darkness.

S- Toasted malts, some chocolate and roast smells. Warm malts, very low hop profile until the end of a good sniff.

T- Somewhat bitter with a strong toasted malt backbone to calm down the bitterness of the hops.

M- Thick, wet and sticky feel.

O- Not my favorite style, but not bad by any means. Balances the hops and sweet malts well. Above average. Enjoyable.

This is what we in the beer-geek world would call a “malt bomb.” Explosively complex, the decoction mash is tooled here with precision to create this amazing brew with tons of malt depth. Another beer that shows that German Wheats brewed by American brewers don’t have to be clove-and-banana palate killers.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: rich brown hue with a pretty heavy haze and two thick fingers of frothy tan head. Quite good.

Smell: quite malty aroma with a big grainy character. Not much wheat aroma, but it's definitely got that sickly-sweetness of a strong lager. Not bad for the style, but not outstanding either.

Taste: flavor is a little wheatier than the aroma, but it's still got that bock-y over-sweetness and some not-so-great yeasty fermentation byproducts. Again, within the style, but a bock (and even a doppel or weizenbock) can be done a lot cleaner.

Mouthfeel: big body with a decent carbonation and a rich smoothness. Not exactly creamy, but not bad.

Overall: if you are really into bocks in general, this beer might work for you. I just think it could be a bit cleaner.

12 oz single from "LifeSource" Salem. $1.79 Pours very dark brown almost black with a quarter inch tan head..daker than all the weizen bocks i have had. Very little aroma..which is a surprise for style what there is is spicy bubblegum Again the flavor is very poor for a Doppel weizen..its non-descript..yeah iots pleasant anough but not what i expected..malty,sugary. Palte is fine to be sure..soft and thick Very very dissapointed

Appearance is a dark amber brown supporting a steady healthy head leaving spotty lace. Smell is faint with dark malt, dark fruits and yeast. Taste of the dark malt, prunes and a little spiciness from the yeast. Mouthfeel has a medium body with a good spike of carbonation. For an American Weizen its not bad with the extra kick.

Poured into a weizen glass. Pours a very dark red brown, two finger fine light tan head with great retention and lacing. Looks nice. Aroma of sweet malt with a hint of wheat. Flavor is rich sweet malt and dark fruit, only slight wheat and clove weizen elements. A slight rye-like sourness, but melds with the sweet malt nicely. Medium bodied with slight creaminess. Finish is a bit dry and has a slight hop kick with lingering malt flavors. Nice flavor integration. I really enjoyed this one.

On tap at Brooks & Brown where we won trivia night.

This pours a murky brown with a decent khaki head rising up for a bit. On the nose there is the characteristic soft and fuzzy wheat aroma plus toasted, nutty malt, with some clove further back. In the mouth there is a slightly bitter beginning to the taste quickly moderated by the hazy wheat. There is wheat toast here. The body is medium and fuzzy with a long finish of toast.

Overall, this is very similar to Bayern's other beers in that it is a very solid, highly drinkable representation of the style without standing out in any particular category. I'm happy to drink this at $7 a pitcher.

The head is a snowy Santa beard white compared to the very dark body of the beer. The taste is interesting. I was hoping for the feeling that I got when I dove head first into two feet of snow, except that it slightly melted and froze a layer of ice two inches in. I was hoping for that tingly feeling, a bit of pain, but everything would be alright if I managed to man up.
Anyway, the pour from the tap I swear was black, but the light allowed it to ‘lighten up’ to a dark, dark brown. At the same time I must admit I am thinking a bit too hard about this, my attention span allowed me to draw a :) in the remaining head which is now has a visible tan line with the light, but a millimeter (if that) tall. The smell has the aroma of a dark roast, almost hoppy, but more of a malt sense. The feel is smooth, I do like this, but no sharp tastes, a smooth blend. I feel that it is a bit thin, which deceives the feel of the color. I also break social norms, I do not see any banana resemblance whatsoever. This is a sweet mix, the aftertaste lingers in a positive light. I do feel the positives toward winter when I sip this...where are you Santa? I would put this by the fireplace for you, as I would drink this and share it with others.

Appearance: black with hints of brown. Bone white head that dissipates to a thin layer, decent lacing.

Smell: Heavy wheat, a little alcohol. Some dark fruit notes.

Taste: Follows the nose, slightly more pleasant.

Mouthfeel: Low bitterness of course, good amount of carbonation. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Overall: Drinkable beer but not worth seeking out.

From the bottle into a Delirum Tremens tulip

Visual (3): Very dark, opaque black colour hearlding it's 'bock' base. Minimal visual carbonation bubbles, with little to no white head that leaves an attractive ring of small bubbles around the crown of the beer. Lack of a head is a little disappointing for an beer touting itself as a weizen.

Aroma (4): scents of alcohol, light smoke, grassy hops, and grains (wheat?). The alcohol hits the nose first and lingers for a while. The overall combination reminds me of a light scotch ale, or light barrel-aged porter.

Taste (4): Malty sweetness dominates with an alcoholic flavour that is light on the pallet. Deceptively light on complexity, but satisfying none the less. Little to no evident hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel (3.5): smooth mouthfeel with light carbonation and creamy mouthfeel. The alcohol doesn't really linger on the pallet as would be expected. A coarse grainy feel is light and does not detract from the smooth drinkability.

Overall (4): A tame beer for its dark colour, high alcohol, and 'bock' name. The weizen traits really shine through in the light malty wheat flavour and the creamy and easy-drinking mouthfeel. The power of the double malt is hinted at in the aroma and the colour. The higher alcohol content is effectively masked. Well done on an original style.

I poured two of these beers together into a nice big frosty mug.

A: A cloudy and very dark brown with a tan colored head. If poured hard the beer retains about a finger widths worth of head.

S: Slight roast smell and clove but only a minimal banana aroma. More than anything a nice wheat-like bread smell is the strongest.

The taste of this beer is as though they brewed it specifically for me, so good.
T: The first part of the flavor is a slightly bitter but mostly toasted bread with a hint of chocolate. The hefeweizen type taste, mainly a clove spice and slight hint of banana sweetness, comes in next blending smoothly with this sweet malty first flavor. This combined taste is homogeneous, full, and sweet. At the end a slight warm alcohol, also blends into the complex flavor leaving you with a nice warm tone.

M: There is a fairly strong amount of carbonation which I enjoyed, and the hef like, somewhat smooth, feel is also good.

Overall, I love this beer more than any other. It is sweet with a nice slightly roasted, chocolate type malt complex that is also blended with the flavors of a dark hef.

A pours a dark brown, almost cola like with a thin head.

S a hint of banana, and a bit of what I think is coffee. Interesting aroma to this one.

T some banana again, along with more coffee, maybe a hint of coco.

M pretty thick.

Overall this is a decent beer that is worth a try. It is definetly different as you get bock like notes along with some traditional weizen notes.
