An interpretation of a classic Polish beer. Brewed with a blend of smoked malt and malted wheat. Light-colored with a slight tartness, subtle smokiness and dry finish.

Poured into a weizen glass on Saturday evening at the Newark, DE location. Comes out a darker amber color with a good amount of turbidity to it. One finger white head has some retention and leaves lacing along the sides.

Smell is an odd mixture of what seems to be some yeast esters and a slight smoky malt undertone. There's some bubblegum and banana here and it's very reminiscent of a weizen beer. Taste is similar, but the smoke plays a much larger role in the flavor. The yeast esters are still present in the front of the beer, but don't stand out as much. Nice wheat twang throughout.

Interesting take on the grodziskie style with the spicy and flavorful yeast, I could do without it but it was still quite tasty.

From tap to Weizen glass at Iron Hill in Newark, DE on 4/14/12
*From notes

A: Beautiful tangerine copper. A .5 finger white head tops the beer. Healthy white collar and lacing follow as the head falls.

S: Smoke and coriander. It's not overly smokey (thank Christ), and the herbaceous quality adds a decent bump in complexity.

T: Like the nose, the smoke is properly balanced. In fact the wheat base of the beer really helps to cushion not only the smoke, but the honey and freshly trimmed herbs, too. Pretty complex. It continually evolves in my mouth as it warms.

M: Creamy and thick. Really well done. Had this been oily or thin, it would have destroyed the delicate balancing act that is Grodzinski.

O: Well done, Iron Hill. My Pops simply loved this beer. It was his favorite of the day. Me? I'd say that the balancing act here is a toughie, yet it's executed well and with a sense of ease. Certainly worth checking out. Thumbs up.
