I had this on tap during the hop attack event in Lancaster.

The color is deep bronze with slight caramel hue with thick ecru cap and ultra fine almost nitrous looking head. The smell is toffee laden with caramel sweet notes and fruity yeast with a yeast/hop blend with tinges of citrus and golden raisins, the aroma is malt forward and sweet. The feel is dry with spicy texture and very light stone fruit tanginess with yeast feel and mild toasted grain with a spicy hop finish.

The flavor has more of dry and spiced profile with piney tinges and slight bitterness is cushioned by the light toffee and nuts with subtle caramel fruit and accents of alohol with more pine and herbal hop flavors in the full bodied finish. The Overall impression of this is a good IPa, with more balance than most and perhaps a tinge toward the malt side with pretty easy to quaff for the strength. I enjoyed this even though I have had better IPA's in the style.

On tap at the Lancaster location, this brew showcases the usage of horizon hops. It pours a clear copper color with a finger of tan froth. As the cap fades, it leaves a webby wall of lacing effect on the glass. A streaming amount of carbonation provides some lasting support to the retention.

The smell of this brew has a bold array of malty sweetness. I get a lot of caramel and darker, toasty toffee sweetness to the nose. There are some fruity accents perhaps coming out from a combination of the alcohol and hops. Towards the back it becomes more defined as hops with a mix of both fruity and floral. A light inclusion of citrus and some minerals are the last things noted.

The taste again includes a surprisingly bold inclusion of malt. Lots of toffee residual sweetness mixes with some mineral character, citrus and fruity rind. A touch of more floral character is here that blends into some fresh herbs. It finishes a bit mineral-filled and surprisingly low on IBU's unless this sweetness is really covering it up.

This is a crisp brew that despite being a bit different from what I was expecting was very easy drinking. It had a medium body and a light level of carbonation. Not really a hop heads offering per say but this is something I would recommend as an ice breaker for someone wanting to get into better beer.

On cask, via gravity fed firkin, during the East vs. West Coast IPA Cask-Off held @ Iron Hill Lancaster on 2/24/12. Served in an oversized mug. This is a 6.8% take on an East Coast IPA.

Pours a deep hazed copper here on cask, with a couple billowy fingers of slightly off-white head. This retains with a big creamy dollop in the middle of the glass that soaps the sides with sticky and foamy lacing. The aroma smells floral and lightly herbal, with some sharp pine notes that round out the edges. Malts give a big push here, with a combination of caramel and bready character that melds with a prominent citrus presence to really impart a strong ripe twang in the nose.

The taste has a big time citric presence here as well, with an assertive bitterness that is well balanced out by a malt backbone that is equal parts caramel and light toasted bread. Ripe feeling herbal flavors flow throughout the profile, adding a certain amount of sleekness to this. The hops seem to show a bit more here on cask than they normally would, as this finishes dry and bitter, with a resinous feel that sticks to the tongue. The mouthfeel is fuller bodied, with a firm creaminess that prickles the tongue but then settles down into more of a smooth creaminess as this reaches out into the corners of the mouth. There is a touch of alcohol here but it seems to mostly just pop those hops a bit. Otherwise, it is very well hid.

This was an enjoyable take on the East Coast style IPA and I liked how the cask conditioning really opened up those Horizon hops here. Well balanced with lots of citrus and pine and a strong push from the malts, this was very tasty. I’d love to see this one return each winter.
