This is a funky beer.

A - Semi hazy amber brown.

S - Smells like tart caramel. Soured and sweet in the nose. Roasty caramel hints with definite acidity.

T - Tastes like it smells. It has a malty backbone, sweet and earthy. Oak dryness and tart acidity lends a nice balance to the overfall impression of the flavors.

M - Dry, but not too dry. Malty but no cloying. I'd say a nice blend of the two.

O - This beer wasn't on the menu at the pub. I was told they keep it secret since much of the general public do not understand sour beers. Glad I asked.

On draft at the 2012 Barrels, Bourbon and Bugs event. Best I can tell from BA listings, this version appears to merit a new entry. From the menu: "Strong scotch ale fermented in stainless then aged in a freshly emptied Pinot Noir barrel and spiked with Brett L. Malt complexity mingles with a touch of spiciness and pie cherry aroma from the Brett and a warming alcohol character".

Pours a still, dark cola brown with a light reddish tint on the edges and a fleeting light tan head with no lace. Malt and dark fruit dominate the nose, smells like a typical wee heavy with a faint hint of some brett funk and fruity pinot barrel. The pinot is more obvious in the flavor; starts with a rich caramel and toffee malt body with rich red, ripe fruit and wine barrel juiciness before finishing hot and with a slight funkiness. Full body and soft carbonation. Interesting combination, but lacking balance and a little too hot.
