On tap @ Iron Hill Lancaster during their Great Pumpkin Harvest Party on 10/20/11. Served in a footed Pils glass.
Pours black, maybe a deeper brown (there’s definitely some ruby that comes out along the bottom), with a ½ finger of mocha colored head. Thin retains with a thin creaminess, leaving back a foamy cascade that splatters the sides of the glass with rich spotty lace. The aroma is dark and delicious with notes of burnt roast, cocoa, caramel, green citrus, and then pumpkin spices that are funneled up the nose with some light warmth.
The taste is bittersweet chocolate up front, which melds into a flush of green citric hops in the middle, before finishing with a burnt and roast backend of coffee flavors. Those pumpkin spices are sprinkled throughout the profile, giving this a delicious festive feel that linger into the finish , along with dry roast and a leftover green feel. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and quite sharp feeling on the tongue before flowing out into more of a smooth creaminess that gets progressively easier and easier to drink as I work my way through the glass. That 6% ABV is practically non-existent in the taste or body and only adds to the VERY overall easy drinking feel of this.
This was pretty darn good and a great way to kick off an awesome night of pumpkin beers here. I think that their staple Pig Iron Porter is pretty underrated as it is and the addition of those pumpkin spices here just really gave this the type of festive fall kick that I’m craving during this time of the year. The drinkability of this was what really surprised me though, with such a smooth feel to it, that I could have sworn that it was on nitro at times. Good stuff!
