On tap @ Iron Hill Phoenixville on 7/9/11 during the annual Blobfest. Served in a tulip glass.
Pours a murky gold, with a thin covering of bright-white head. This mostly retains with a thin foamy ring around the edges of the glass, leaving back some light and spotty looking lace which quickly dissipates. The aroma is pretty much all cinnamon and some other assorted spices thrown in. I do pick up a sugary layer of sweetness from the base Tripel underneath, as well as some sharp yeast notes (even though it isn’t hugely identifiable) but the spicing here just absolutely dominates the nose.
The spices in the taste are once again fairly pronounced but not quite as much as they were in the nose, with much more sweetness coming through from underneath this time. A warm and dry yeasty feel takes hold in the middle of the profile (any peppery spice character from the yeast appears to be gobbled up by the other spices) and pretty much controls the finish on this, as it hangs on the palate with some extra lingering cinnamon as well. The mouthfeel is fuller bodied, with a lively crispness to the carbonation that then gets a touch creamier feeling towards the back. The alcohol is actually very well hid for a 9% beer but the strength that is present here really draws the boldness of those cinnamon flavors out much too strongly at times.
While this was certainly interesting, it was just way too lopsided toward the cinnamon and all spice aspect of things, to the degree that it reminded me a good bit of some of those over spiced Pumpkin Ales that come out every fall. 12 oz of this was way too much for me, as this was one of the few times that I’ve left beer back in the glass at an Iron Hill location. It you like lots of spices in your beer, you maybe will go for this, but it overall just wasn't my thing.
