On tap at Iron Hill Phoenixville, PA. Pours dark brown with long lasting, off-white, creamy head. Aroma is of prunes, coffee, herbal hops, toasted, nutty malt. Body is medium and smooth. Taste is similar to aroma. Finish is long, coffee like. Nice brew.

I had this on tap served in a pils glass.
A - Deep walnut/cola brown w/ a 1 finger light beige cap w/ subtle laces streams adorning the glass
S - Mild cocoa/roasted aroma w/ hints of noble hops and mild cream
M - Slightly dry feel w/ sufficient roasted character, moderate carbonation and mild bitterness. Tinges of nutty/dry toast in the finish are very good texture-wise
T - The flavor of this black lager is especially good w/ very light burnt malt notes and very tasty roasted characteristics +lager yeast givig the flavor a subtle mellow middle which leads into a crisp taste w/ bready, toasty and earthy hop hints. There is a hint of bran also w/ a light lactic quality which also brings a bit of mineral to mind, but it is only there if search for it.
D - An excellent lager, one of my favorites style-wise. I could probably drink a growler of this easily. You can tell the skill of a brewer by the lagers I am told - This is a traditional, well brewed schwarzbier

A 16 oz glass served at the Lancaster brewpub.
A: The schwarzbier lives up to its name, it is a dark black/brown color, looking like jet black coffee. Head retention was minimal.
S: The nose is bready, with burnt notes that are not intensely strong. A decent hop profile cuts through the burnt grain flavors.
T: The grainy malts dominate the taste, dark and burnt with a residual sweetness that has chocolate and caramel in spades. Hoppiness is evident but not overwhelming.
M: The mouthfeel is strong but not full. The flavors stand out but the overall malt-centric nature of the beer prevents it from getting to strong.
D: A decent quaffer, the beer is solid without a lot of bells and whistles.

On tap at the brewpub on 12/20/08.
Pours a dark brown (almost black) with some garnet highlights shining through and big ole' creamy head of mocha colored foam. The retention stays strong and thick, leaving a nice looking latticework of patchy lacing behind. The aroma is surprisingly floral and citric smelling up front, but as it warms, a solid undercurrent of dark roast, chocolate, and caramel emerges.
The taste is similar, with a surprisingly assertive hoppy profile of tingling bitterness and a splash of citrus that dominates at first. Luckily as this warms, a solid roasty layer of chocolate and caramel malts comes out to play, evening out the hops, and providing a well balanced profile with just the right amount of flavor without being overly bitter. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a nice creamy feel that almost gets up to fuller status. Pretty darn good considering that this is in sub 5% ABV territory.
This was a little too hoppy at first, but it evened out nicely and made for a quite refreshing and flavorful dark beer experience. And with the lower ABV, this is perfect for winter time imbibing. Good stuff!
