On tap @ Iron Hill Phoenixvile on 10/8/10. Served in an oversized mug.

Pours a deep amber, with a thin foamy eggshell-white colored head. Retains mostly with some fizzy bunching around the edges, leaving back a spotty cascade that hurriedly slides down the sides of the mug. The aroma is a bit light at first but then opens up a bit more as I really get into it. Spices emerge first, quickly followed by some caramel sweetness and green floral character. I'm not really getting much pumpkin itself here.

Much like the aroma, there is a lot of spice here that is backed by a sticky feeling mix of bread and caramel. Earthy bitterness prickles the tongue and grows stronger as this warms, helping somewhat balance the strong sweetness in this. I'm getting a little more pumpkin flavor here in the taste, than I did in the aroma, but it still seems pretty light to me. The finish is all spice and lingers strongly along with some earthy dryness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and crisp and sharp feeling throughout. For 7%, this hides the alcohol very well.

Way too much spice at times, too much sweetness at others, and just not enough pumpkin flavors all around, I found this effort to be a bit lacking. I will say that this at least drank decently for the size. I put down most of this mug but was quickly inclined to move on.

Enjoyed at Iron Hill Lancaster on 10/10/10.

A - Rusty copper-tinged autumn orange body with a frothy off-white head that dispersed into a bubbly patch and produced a ring of lacing around the rim of the glass.

S - The aroma is not overly spied, like many of is peers, although cinnamon is displayed most prominently here. Still, there is some clove, allspice and nutmeg (typical pumpkin ale fare) present. Aside from the requisite spices, there is also a hint of malty crust, vanilla sweetness and roasted pumpkin meat, giving the ale a very well-rounded aroma.

T - Like the aroma, the cinnamon aspect is most noticeable, while all of the other spices are relegated to second chair. A hint of vanilla offers some sweetness, while the roasted pumpkin meat really comes out in the middle, giving the flavor an authentic taste of autumn. Finishes with a hint of floral hop bitterness in the midst of spicy cinnamon and nutmeg notes, which adds a bit more depth to the flavor.

M - Medium bodied with a light syrupy texture. Finish is sweet with just a tinge of hop bitterness on the palate and plenty of residual spiciness.

D - Pretty damn delicious pumpkin ale! This one exceeded my expectations, actually. This isn't just another overly spiced, one-dimensional pumpkin ale. This one offers a cornucopia of complex flavors and aromas, all of which remain well-balanced throughout. Nicely done, Paul!

I didn't like the pumpkin pie in a glass..however,this was one of the more better pumpkin ales of the 07 season. Iron Hill uses 150 lbs of pie pumpkins, roasts, and then adds to the mash. The beer was spiced with the traditional pumpkin pie spices instead of the finishing hops. Sounds lucious, and almost edible.
