Had this on 2012-09-14 in Lancaster, PA at Iron Hill Brew Pub

A - Mostly clear, golden-mahohany with a big 2-finger head in a mug club mug. The head faded fairly quickly but left good lacing.

S - Lightly tropical with lots of pineapple. Flowery hop oils and a hint of caramel malt. The hops have faded some since the initial release of this beer in the spring.

T - Candied fruit (orange and pineapple) supported by caramel malt, floral hops, spice and some pine. It is initially pretty sweet followed by a moderatly-bright citrus taste and some oily yet-restrained hop bitterness. As the sweetness fades, the taste improves to a fairly sharp, red grapefruit bitterness and residual sweetness. The alcohol is present but not forward. I like the taste, particularly after getting past the initial sweetness.

M - Medium-heavy body and light-medium carbonation (almost as good as on-tap) Sticky, resinous and mildly prickly.

O - A very fine offering from Iron Hill. Glad to have this brew in any format.

This poured out as a very nice clear orange color with a small soapy white head on top. The retention is thin with a nice sticky lacing. The smell of the beer gives off hoppy aromas of oranges, banana, pine and some mango. The taste is sweet upfront with a nice malt profile that fades into the bitter strike of the hops that balance this out. The mouthfeel is smooth yet sharp with some strong carbonation and bitterness. Overall it's a sweet beer that transitions into a very resiny IPA. I found it enjoyable and very happy to have finally tried this.

A - Pours a dark gold color with a very thin head and lots of carbonation.

S - Tropical fruit and fruit rinds. Oranges, grapefruit, pineapple with super light caramel malt.

T - Hopped to high heaven. Tropical fruit, pungent rinds, spicy, and floral with minimal caramel malt coming through. This beer is a perfect mixture of sweet vs. bitter hops and is pretty much a full attack on the palette. The two nuances blend perfectly and creates a swirling sensation between the two going from one to the other before finishing with an aggressive pine floral combo for a long lingering finish that also coats the mouth with an almost metallic-like sensation.

M - Full bodied and smooth carbonation.

O - One of the best D-IPA's I 've had in quite awhile and well worth the effort in this out of the way Philly suburb city.

Thanks to IrishColonial for sharing this one the other night. It poured bright amber in color with a thin, sticky white head clinging to edges of the glass. Pretty clear with nice color and good lacing to it.

The aroma is bright with some really nice tropical fruits to it. Pineapple, mango and grapefruit all come out. It has a bit of a candied, sweeter fruit presence to it, which I love.

The taste shows more of the juicy, fruity, tropical notes up front. The finish shows some strong resiny bitterness with notes of grapefruit and pine. Nice range of hoppiness to it and very drinkable as well.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with carbonation being about average for the style. Overall, I thought it was a great beer. Very drinkable and hoppy with a very good range of flavors to it. The sweeter, candied, tropical like fruit flavors were especially outstanding in it.

Thanks to Centennial for the growler.

Pours bright amber, sort of an orange-ish yellow, just a shade or so darker than the palest of DIPAs. Perfectly transparent. Nice puffy white head, good lacing.

The aroma is packed with bright, juicy hops. Tons of citrus, tropical fruits and marijuana. It's fresh and clean and rich with sweet delicate hop notes. There's pineapples, mangos, grapefruits, lemons and wildflowers. A subtle, sweet malt backbone holds everything up. Excellent.

The taste backs up the promise of the nose. Lots more hops. It's a fairly resinous hoppiness. There's some apparent malt sugariness to round things out, but this is a DIPA with some bite. The bitterness is fairly strong but still doesn't get in the way of the more delicate hop flavors. It's just right for me. A pleasant, drinkable hop nectar of a beer that doesn't try to pretend that you only need aroma and dry hopping for a DIPA. Lasting finish with lots of lingering hop flavor, dank and tropical.

Mouthfeel is light and bright. There's good hop oiliness. It's well carbonated. The counter pressure-filled growler was a particularly nice touch. Tasted like it was fresh from the tap.

This is really great stuff. Lots of hop aroma. Bitter without turning things bland. Excellent.

From 64oz growler to Portsmouth glass on 5/16/12
*From notes

-- Thanks to IrishColonial for the hook-up --

Filled at the Wilmington, DE location

A: Clean orange amber. A generous pour yields a pale white two finger head. A thick collar and solid lacing follow.

S: Hop pellets. Juicy, tropical hop pellets. A ton of fruit overwhelms the nose. This beer gives off a major West Coast vibe from start to finish.

T: Bitter, juicy and dry as hell. I get a little bit of malt on the mid. The finish is piney, the kind of hop influence that seeps through the pores on your face for hours. Again, it's bone dry even on the finish, moreso then I typically prefer on a DIPA like this.

M: Pleasant stuff. Good, complex texture. A bit too bubbly, but it in no way keeps it from being rich and inviting.

O: Certainly a tasty and extremely fresh DIPA, yet it's not usually the kind I reach for. In the end though, this doesn't hold it back too much, yet it never really reaches the upper echelon of the style. I'm stoked to finally tick this mother, though I feel there is better out there in what's become a fierce hop-forward market.

Counter pressure filled growler courtesy of SpillyBeers. Thanks!

A: Hazy yellow orange body with two inches of white sea foam. Impressive retention and a comical amount of lacing sheets stick to the glass.

S: Bright, vibrant hop aroma, redolent with notes of grapefruit, spicy mango, guava, pineapple, peach, and papaya. Floral aromatics waft from the glass, blending with dank marijuana. Malt is sweet but subtle, playing a decidedly supportive role for the hops. It's reminiscent of cracker and sugar cookie.

T: Delicious juicy tropical and citrus fruits. Mango blends with peach, pineapple, grapefruit, guava, tangerine, and orange. Very bright and very fresh. There's a little sweet crackery malt in there to support the explosive fruitiness. There's a smooth moderate bitterness throughout. The finish is dry and clean with a plethora of fruit that lingers and lingers. 9%? Jesus. Not a trace of booze.

M: Lower medium body with medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is sticky, smooth, and dry.

Overall: Right up my alley. It's clean like a Pizza Port beer with some nice tropical notes that remind me of Hill Farmstead.

On Tap at Iron Hill Chestnut Hill. Two Glasses.

Kryptonite poured in the snifter looks a nice bold gold with orange color throughout. Very clear looking beer and a nice dense off white cap of foam that clings to the glass. Smell is very bright and pungent with the citrus coming off prominent, yet not overpowering the faint biscuit malted scent as well. Big whiffs of the pineapple and the mango and the orange. A mild sweetness with warming. On the palate, this is one mighty fine DIPA. Tastes include some mild sweetness from the malt coming of with a biscuity/bready vibe. That is an understatement to the citrus and tropical flavor present including mango, pineapple, orange and fruity appeal. No trace of the 9% in taste but a warming quality comes in small sips. Feel is at about medium yet it drinks so easy, it comes off lighter than that with a very dry finish. A double that drinks like a single. Carbed up nice without a bite. The krypt just is an easy drinker with mad flavor that is all.

Growler from Centennial. Thanks!

Appearance: Pours a shade of pale gold, surprisingly light and clear, decidedly West Coast style. Two fingers of lasting, frothy head cap the body.

Smell: A ton of citrus, primarily pineapple and tangerine. There are lesser notes of marijuana, cut grass and pine. The sugar cookie malt backbone becomes more noticeable as it warms, though it remains faint. This smells great.

Palate: Juicy, ripe tangerines and pineapples up front. Lightly sweet and sugary, with a clean and crisp light body. Becomes a bit more herbal and resinous mid-palate. The finish is wonderfully biting and bitter, certainly more intense than most West Coast DIPAs, but it never feels excessive. Alcohol isn't noticeable at all beyond a bit of warmth in the swallow.

Overall: Such an excellent beer. I can't believe this stuff is coming out of PA - it tastes like a Pizza Port DIPA. Highly recommended.
