West Chester's Iron Hill recently has been pouring a good hefeweizen. Lots of lemon zest, good carbonation, and lots of flavor with each sip. Not weak by any means, but you can tell the West Chester brewmaster knows his wheat beers. Well rounded and good for beer novices to beer geeks. Recommended.

On tap at Iron Hill Media.

A good stab at a traditional hefeweizen. Appropriately cloudy appearance, thin white band of foam for a head, decent lacing. Lots of clove and banana in the aroma, same flavors, on the sweeter side for the style, grainy, a bit of banana candy along with the clove, allspice, and other less identifiable spices. Good overall yeastiness. Crisp and clean with a bit more lingering sweetness than would be optimal for me but overall not a bad attempt. Not up there with the best hefes but still more than passable.

Served in a pils style footed glass. Glass of cold water on the side to sip from periodically.

Appearance: As served the beer is a cloudy light lemon yellow color with a ½' white head that persists for a long time and leaves bits of scattered lacing when sipping.

Smell: The aromas are yeast, and grain with clove, and banana showing, but they are light and delicate and play nicely with each other.

Taste: The flavors are definitely a bit of grain, some clove and some banana but as in the nose they are also subtle and the banana is closer to fresh and lightly flavored than a mature banana and does not overpower.

Mouthfeel: The mouth feel is medium to light bodied with nice gentle carbonation. The finish begins with some sweetness, slides on out of the banana and tails off with some dry clove.

Drinkability: This beer surprised me in that at first I was expecting stronger aromas and flavors. But as I became accustomed to it I quite enjoyed sipping on an hefewizen that relies on subtlety and balance for its effects. Each sip followed the last quite easily, the glass was too soon empty, and I'd be happy to have another on a return visit to the Media Iron Hill.

Poured into a snifter. A slightly more hazy then anticipated bright yellow color.Did leave tremndous lacing a decent heading.

Smell was very crisp like a saltine cracker and an even crispier wheat aroma.

Taste is again very crisp and clean. Light cracker like malts with a nice hoppy taste. Nice lemon zestiness in this as well. Perfect for the hotter day that I was drinking this on. There is a somwhat soggy bread taste that linger's well after I was finished.

Mouth light bodied and very crisp.Finishes extremely clean.

There isn't all that much to say just an all around solid Hefeweizen.

A: Poured a golden-lemon, a full solid color with no transparency, topped off by a thin frothy slightly off white head that was average retention wise (2 maybe 3 minutes tops). The lacing was good leaving a full band encompassing the glass.

S: The nose was light in strength but managed to emit some spicy notes. Tangerines mixed well with some light banana breadiness. Light interlude of citrusy lemons intervenes throughout.

T: A nice spicy bite opens things up with a combination of tangerines and tropical fruitiness. Oranges and mild grapefruit juice hints add spicy notes per style against a wheaty backing. A good spicy twang also appears on the finish of citrus and cloves adding some liviness and enough respect to garnish good regards. Overall clean and spicy.

M: The mouthful was between light and medium, with a smooth texture but lacked that hard crisp bite and sat rather lazily on the tongue.

D: Easily drinkable, a nice spicy twang with a smooth delivery will make your thirsty for next one on a hot summer day. A good past time quencher for that backyard gathering with growler recommendation for such.

It arrived with a finger of off-white head with good retention. The color was an extremely cloudy lemon-yellow. The nose was a musty, yeasty smell underlain with the characteristic banana scent. The mouthfeel was medium with a distinct clove flavor up front, followed by the banana, and finishing with a return to the dry clove flavor. Leave it to the indomitable Mr. Rutherford to craft a beer that a self-avowed hata of the style can enjoy. That said, two of these would still be plenty for yours truly.

I used to live above the iron hill in lancaster and I must say that this is one of the worst beers I have tasted from the brewery.

The beer has a foggy yellow color that actually looked pretty interesting, but the beer didn't smell great. The taste was overwhelmingly a banana flavor with a few minor hints of citrus. The beer was very carbonated to a point where it almost tasted like a soda. However, it was very light and drinkable despite not tasting fantastic. Although I love most of Iron Hill's beers, I do not recommend the hefe.

Served on-tap at the Lancaster location.

A: The weizen looks like it was filtered, a litle to clear for my likes. The pale straw colorhas a little depth of shade. A finger of head lasted for the first half of the glass.

S: The nose is wheaty, not so tart but sharp enough to betray it. Some clove flavors pop out of the weizen but not as much as I'd expect.

T: The ale strikes me as a pale wheat rather than a hefe. Some spices pop through but the graininess of the malts is evident, even dominant. Clove and banana are sparse, just enough to be noticed but not ebough to zing. Too bad, it's tough to turn down a good hefe.

M: The mouthfeel has some pop but not enough to sustain it through a full glass. A little more yeast profile would be nice.

D: The ale is very approachable and quaffable, just not quite as advertised.

A - Perfect golden brown opaque. Thin soapy head dissipates quickly.

S - Spice and phenolics; bubble gum

T - Mild spice, clove, lemon, musk, good.

M - Layered but thin. Virtually no finish.

D - Good but could use more acid and or spice to liven things up.

On tap at Iron Hill Lancaster on 7/25/08.

A - Hazy, almost creamy golden/straw-colored body with half a finger of silky white head that held quite nicely and left lots of thick lacing around the glass.

S - Lots of clove and spicy, yeasty goodness with a bit of pepper as well as bubblegum sweetness. Some mild banana in the back.

T - Taste is primarily spicy with a good bit of clove and some pepper as well. Sweet bubblegum pushes through as well as a hint of banana and spicy yeast.

M - Medium to full body with a chewy texture. Moderate carbonation provides a good amount of prickle. Finishes quite spicy and a little on the dry side.

D - Pretty straight up hefe with more of a spicy palate and minimal sweetness. Overall, this is a nice representation of the style.

Served at the brewpub 6/6/08.

Pours a hazy pale gold with a finger of brite-white head. Retains well with a thin layer that sticks around and leaves some nice spooty lacing down the sides of the mug. The aroma is a pleasant Hefe bouquet of lemon, clove, yeast, and mellow malty sweetness. Pretty textbook.

The taste matches the smell with an initial sense of yeast and malt up front that gives way some prominant lemon zest and spicy cloves. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a creamy carbonation and crisp bite at the end that finishes wtih a bit of a pop.

Wow! No extra lemon needed on the side in this Hefe. It come built in! Big lemon zest and other refreshing character make this a textbook example of the style and one easy drinking beer for the summer. One to enjoy out front on the brewpub's patio on a hot day.

I had this on tap recently at the Brewpub in Lancaster at College Row.
Served cold in a wheat glass

A - A cider-like golden w/ hazing from yeast and a dishsoap white cap of about 1 finger crestst the wheat ale. The bead is miniscule and the lace is fairly well clinging and leaves confetti patterns

S -Mild tropical and hints of the standard banana and clove are there, but basically not overwhelming the nose

M- Very effervescent like a good hefe should be w/ grainy spice and yeasty essence giving a creamy effect

T - A pretty standard yet flavorful interpretation of a hefe, no bells and whistles, just very decent wheat flavor and a crisp maltiness w/ mild banana notes in the unfruited wheat taste. Nice flavors w/ yeast doing its job handily and just enough spice to make this a tasty unfiltered wheat

D - A great ale for anticipating summer w/ refreshing qualities and crisp refreshing weizen yeast giving the effervescent feel that refreshes and adds to the light yet tasty wheat
