Served on-tap at Iron Hill West Chester as part of Belgium Comes to West Chester. It is served with the main course of pork prime rib.
A: The ale is a slightly hazy yellow color, close to golden, with a head that weighs in close to 1 finger.
S: The aroma is a buttery chardonnay-like oak flavor. There is little that tells me that this is a witbier.
T: The ale is assimilated the oak nicely. The flavor is buttery, strong and intense, almost but not-quite bourbony. The oak flavors overtake all aspects of what is normally a delicate witbier.
M: The mouthfeel shows no sign of witbier. It is all chardonnay, buttery oak and very enjoyable.
D: I used to rave over hand-pumped ales. I now find that barrel-aged beers are my taste du jour. I love the buttery softness imparted by an oak, it overtakes most flavors but never ruins a beer.
