From December 2006. A nitro pour served at the West Chester restaurant.

A: The porter is porter black, offering up brown highlights when held to light. The head is a 2 finger, nitro-thick pour.

S: The bourbon dominates the nose, creating a buttery sweet and alcohol-heavy aroma.

T: The bourbon barrel has left its mark on this beer. The first flavors to hit the palate are bourbon sweetness and alcoholic bitterness. That distinct bourbon flavor never really subsides, remaining buttery, chardonnay-like, and sweet. My only complaint is that the porter's roasted qualities neve quite shine through here.

M: The bourbony sweetness is nice on the palate but can easily overload the tastebuds.

D: The intensity of the bourbon makes drinkability tough, even if it only creates the illusion of a bourbon's strength. One glass though, delicious.

The Baltic Porter at Iron Hill had already been one of my favorites at this brewpub chain. Now throw it in a bourbon barrel for over 6 months and out comes an equally impressive beer with even more nuances.

A- Deep brown virtually black, like you'd expect. Tan crown that sticks around a while on top and on the glass.

S- Big, Big, uh BIG bourbon nose. Actually, could be offputting to some and intriguing to others. Couldn't pick up much else in the aroma. A bit like my Weyerbacher barrel as it dries in the sun after a drenching rain.

T- Vanilla, licorice, birch, oak, and more bourbon.

M- Smooth like you'd expect from the nitrogen. Just a bit slick.

D- A bit of alcohol warming (or is that the bourbon fooling me?). Such a joy to drink, but not all night.

Appears a dense black with dark caramel edges and a thick, foamy, light tan head that builds as the beer cascades down the glass from the nitro-pour. Lots of sticky lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is intense of bourbon sweetness, oak, vanilla, caramel, cocoa, and cream. I just couldn't stop smelling it b/c it was so addictive. This already fantastic Baltic Porter has gotten better by letting it sit in the Eagle Rare oak barrels that held bourbon for at least 10 years.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas in a taste that comes together like a designed recipe that couldn't miss. The vanilla, and roasted nuts play off of both the bourbon oak, and the Baltic Porter, making it complex and enticing. Throw in that cocoa and distilled bourbon mash and it's even more enthralling.
Mouthfeel is smooth, full bodied, sweet, and mildly bitter with the cocoa presence. You'll be licking your lips from the sticky, sweet bourbon flowing over them.
This is a well done brew. Served a shade too cold IMO but let it warm if you have the patience and watch this brew marvel your tastebuds.
