A 750 mL corked and caged bottle purchased at the West Chester location back in November. Since then, it has been cellared in my basement.
A: The cork pops with nary a sound, scaring the hell out of me (as the bottle was $20 or so). Luckily gas wafting out of the bottle was an instant relief. The ale, as poured, erupted in the glass, filling up 4 plus fingers of thin bubbly head. The ale has a cola color, much more brilliant with an orange hue when light shines through. The thick head has also left a significant amount of lace in the glass.
S: The nose is very grainy, full of toffee and nut aromas that nicely accentuate the English side (big on malts but not overboard with Pac NW hops).
T: The flavor is a pleasant extension of the nose, kicking up some caramel flavor. That flavor caught me a little off guard as I was expecting nuttiness but the surprise is enjoyable. The caramel flavors eventually mix with the toffee and nuttiness to creating a swirling mouth that comes close (but avoids) cloying sweetness. The entire malt body is met with bittering hops only, leaving a sweetness in the mouth that is devoid of any sign of alcohol.
M: The mouthfeel is malty sweet, keeping up an intense flavor that leaves a strong flavor throughout. The finish, as I let it sit, does betray a hint of alcohol warmth, assisting in breaking up for caramel and toffee.
D: For a strong ale, the abv is low enough that it won't do you in. For as much as I enjoy this beer, I don't think that it is worth the big price tag that is attached to Iron Hill beers (others are, this one isn't). On the other hand, I purchased this of my own free will...
