A. very nice christmas bottle that goes with a evening of holiday cheer. it poured a little cloudy with a little head oh foam.

S. smelled like a barleywine with a alcohol hints. maybe a little other flavors in there like vanilla and caramel, but the alcohol stood out the most to me.

T. first sip, i said this was better than expected, and enjoyed the taste to the very last drop. it was good cold, and even as it sat it stayed just as good as it warmed up. i sipped it slowly.

M. very enjoyable, then the alcohol flavor disappears, and the aromas kick in there. maybe a little vanilla, spice, caramel and just a good combination of flavors.

D. wish i had a little more. i will remember to get this beer every christmas.

BBE 2014. Not sure when it was bottled.

Beer is a relatively light brown with reddish elements. Much lighter than expected for the style. Smallish off-white head fades quickly, leaving just some film.

Rich smell. Prune, fig and red grape. Vinous. Bready. Yeast.

Taste is similar to the nose and quite focused on dark fruits. Raisin, cherry, red grape, prune. Brown sugar and some bready flavours. Some spices. Alcohol is noticeable but remarkably well hidden considering the strength. Quite sweet.

Full bodied, moderate to strong carbonation, some alcohol heat, sticky sweetness.

Overall, very sweet but very good. A real beast of a beer. If this is really 13% (I have a bit of trouble believing it), it is one dangerous brew.

750ml bottle into a snifter

A: Quite light for the style, it's medium amber with three fingers of large bubble head, which quickly receded to a thin film. Not good.

S: Nothing like any BSDA I've ever had. Sour cherry mixes with prune. A touch of spicy esters, but not much.

T: At least this is better than the aroma. Sour cherry is still there, but it's not nearly as strong. Plums and prunes are also there, but not as strong as I'm used to for the style. I get some buttery qualities and a ton of booze.

M: Quite thick with low carbonation.

O: I hope for this beer that this is a bad bottle. I get butter and sour cherry, but it's more subtle than I'm used to for an infected bottle. The beer is also overly thick, has little to no esters, and no bright citrus to balance. Oh, and it's way boozy.

750 ml bottle, chilled down to 45f and served in a tulip glass.

A - Considered the best way to describe the appearance of this one while I had a glass or two, so I hope I'm not too tilted when I say it looks EXACTLY like sweet tea. The haziness, the little particles floating around inside, the black tea color, even a thin layer of foam. I'll add that while the carboantion is still strong (which was not long out of my bottle) its like a dirty snow globe inside my glass. How appro for a holiday ale.

S - Loads of brown sugar, toffee, dessert wine and baking spices. Captures the essence of the season well and decently complex.

T - Sweet and more complex than the nose indicates. All the spices stand out individually here rather than blend together, seems like a different taste every sip. It is a bit more vinuous than I expected, more white wine than sherry or port. Faintly woody also, like oak or alder wood. Very good.

M - Its syrupy and strong up front. Dries out very quickly and finishes with little more than a warm feeling in the back of the throat. At 13%, how that can be done is a work of art IMO.

O - In the holiday ale context, I love it. Not quite up there with the best beers I've had, but I cant wait to introduce friends and family to this one each year when the holidays come around.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before 2014. Pours lightly cloudy red orange color with a 1 finger foamy off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace that lingers. Slight spotty foamy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of big raisin, cherry, prune, caramel, apple, brown sugar, molasses, cinnamon, candi sugar, pepper, earth, toast, clove, and herbal yeast spiciness. Damn nice aromas with big complexity, strength, and balance. Taste of raisin, prune, pear, apple, toast, caramel, molasses, brown sugar, toffee, candi sugar, cinnamon, pepper, earth, clove, and herbal spiciness. Fair amount of yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of complex dark fruits, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, molasses, toffee, candi sugar, cinnamon, clove, pepper, and herbal yeast spiciness on the finish for a while. Fantastic flavor complexity, robustness, and balance of flavors; with a good balance of spicy flavor despite big maltiness; with zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a slick and fairly syrupy mouthfeel that is very nice. Alcohol is extremely well hidden at 13%; with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding Belgian dark ale! Huge balance and complexity of big robust flavors; and very smooth to sip on for 13%. A highly enjoyable strong Belgian style offering.

Bottle from Belgianbeershop.com Head: off white, dissapears very quickly. Colour: dark red brown. Aroma: sweet, malty, fruity, clear alcohol presence. Taste: malty sweetness, fruits, caramel, spicy, complex but well balanced. High ABV is detectable. This is a very fine Christmas beer.
