Poured from a funny looking 750ml bottle into my tasting snifter. $50 a bottle! Yikes...thanks to my brother-in-law Damon for bringing this to the table! Pours a hazy, apricot looking amber color. TONS of floaties in this beer! A very nice size creamy, yet fizzy white head forms...decent retention...but dissipates to a creamy rim. Doesn't leave much of a lacing...what's left is quick sliding. Appearance resembles a carbonated apple cider.

Aroma is wonderful! Tons of ripe and sweet fruits. Apple, banana, pear, malts, slight booze(surprisingly-expected to be a bit boozier in the nose).

Flavor is kind of a drop off from the flavor. Definitely a good taste, but nowhere as fruit forward as the nose. From what's noticable, some pear, apple, malts, wheat, yeast... I'd have to say, this is a very decent beer...but not a $50 bottle to say the least. I'd drink it again, but not at this price. Mouthfeel is medium, carbonation is medium to high. Booze isn't strong, again...surprisingly. Glad I got the chance to try it!

Pours a burnished copper colour, head of small bubbles but retaining well. Yeah, good.

Smells quite bretty and funky. Fair bready yeast character as well with notes of lime, pineapple and currants. Earthy at times as well, with a good amount of tartness. Nice.

Wow, taste is more like a perry. Seriously, pear, apple, a touch of vanilla and raspberry and a big gulp of cinnamon. Funky barnyard sort of rounds it out and adds a richness to the pleasant mélange of sweet/sour/spicy. Fascinating, and delicious palate.

Bit boozey hot, unfortunately, and quite noticeably. A shame. Decent body though.

Really enjoying this, in spite of the obvious heat. So much nice sweet, spicy and sour in great balance that I don't care that much.

Vintage 2011 - 50% off made this $25 bones.

Golden apricot with plenty of floaties that result in an obviously uber-bubbly beer. Solid sheet of light cream foam. Booze, apple, pear, light loose malt, co2, a little touch of tart smell. Sweet malts, some booze, vanilla, metal, some light pear (asian), some bitterness, some yeast. Medium on thin with hi carb and a wet and warm finish. I'm disappointed to say the least based on the pride/price of this one. It's got no real apparent flaws, but nothing to really set it apart.

"2010" 750 ml bottle poured into a NB snifter.

A - Pours a light, soft yellow. 1/2-finger head of fluffy, tight, slightly off-white foam quickly falls to fine lace across the surface. Beer is a sunset apricot-orange that's cloudy and mostly opaque. There's a thick column of bubbles rising from middle of the bottom of the glass.

S - Very rich, light caramel and malts. Notes of quite ripe tree fruits like pear, but not sugary sweet. Hints of vanilla and brown sugar. As it warms, a muted tangerine-lemon whiskey appears with just a touch of smooth woodiness. Overall, nose is pretty muted.

T - An incredibly complex mix of caramelized malts, figs, apricots, and caramel-covered Granny Smith apples. Undercurrent of liquor throughout. High ABV is well-hidden, but present in the same way it is in a rich, well-structured wine. Almost becomes a dark fruit brandy as the flavors ride the oaked malts. The thoroughness of the blend almost defies deconstructing it into constituent parts.

M - Fizzy and rather crisp. Exceptionally well-integrated structure. Medium body, on the lighter side, but definitely not thin. Moderate finish that leaves a warm spot in the tummy and non-cloying echoes on the back of the tongue.

O - After reading a review that asked whether a single bottle of beer could really be worth $40, and concluding that it could, I decided this would be the New Year's Eve beverage rather than the traditional champagne. What struck me most about this bottle was how complex the marriage of its flavors are, and how fruit-forward they are without being at all sugary sweet. I'm not sure taking tasting notes on the side of other activities really does this beer justice; it seems to almost demand full, slowly paced concentration to reveal every possible nuance it has to offer. I can't say this is a beer I'll make a point of having again, as its style isn't one I immediately gravitate toward, but without a doubt, this bottle was well-worth experiencing simply because of its exceptional quality and complexity. It would make quite a gift for anyone who truly appreciates an epicurean experience.

2008 vintage. I've been storing this one for four years and decides Xmas Eve was as good a time as any to finally open it.

Pours a very cloudy, dark golden amber color with dark orange edges and a two finger white foam head that quickly settles into a lasting ring. Streaks of soapy lacing left behind.

Vinous aroma with a strong barrel presence that's nicely integrated into the elements of the base beer. Strong toasted oak character along with vanilla, rye whiskey and calvados brandy notes. Pretty complex and similar to an oak aged barley wine with hints of leathery malt, toffee, caramel and dark fruits. Some spicy rye and apple lingering underneath the barrel notes as well as hints of plum, raisin and fig. Very nice!

Medium bodied with surprising amount of carbonation considering it's age and high ABV. As in the aroma, it feels more like a barrel aged old ale/barley wine. Complex barrel character with combination of virgin oak, whiskey and brandy barrel flavors. Toasted and slightly toothpick-y with dry oak, spicy rye whisky, and apple and brandy notes. Zesty spice compliments the spicy rye notes before being countered by sweet and earthy malts, bready yeast and dark fruit sweetness. Strong barrel presence but it doesn't overpower the base with hints of toffee, caramel apple, fig, plum, currants and dark cherries. There's a decent amount of alcohol sweetness and some warmth in the finish but the 13% ABV is pretty well masked. Complex and flavorful but definitely a sipper.

Bottle purchased for me by @epiclurk. Shared with Rich & Sam. You know who they are.

Pours a deep amber, turning to garnet, with a fluffy, but slightly bubbly and insubstantial head of white. No lacing. Body looks heavy enough, but also slightly oily and dangerous. It looks somewhat still and menacing.

Nose is spicy and sharp, but with a solid backing of stretched malt and toffee. There are definite wafts of booze coming through, with a heady intensity that already makes you a little woozy. Peppery, yet sweet. It's odd.

Taste is rich and deep, with a most pronounced lightness in feel and body that I was afraid was going to let the booze take over—fortunately, it doesn't, it sits in the wings with the suggestion of intensity. Light honey characters come through balanced with a little pepper and a mild astringency, which is tempered and restrained. Mild carbonic character on the finish, and the suggestion of apricots. It's not bad.

Feel is certainly much, much lighter than I thought it might have been. It could survive a serious increase.

Overall, it's pretty well-balanced, without getting too hot or intense, despite its strength. It's a complicated beer, no doubt, but it manages to stay on the side of respectability.
