The Blast Furnace Stout on the cask-conditioned hand pull was the best offering of the Church Brew Works in early August of 05. It had a darkly colored, deep head which slowly disappeared after the first couple of sips. The overall nose was that of intensely roasted malt - which fit with the title, yet it was not an overpowering smell, as the cask conditioning had an ample dampening effect on the roast character of the malts used.
Aroma hops were nearly non-existent, but upon quaffing the Blast Furnace Stout smoothly slid across the surface of the tongue and opened up with a fairly significant body. Upon close, the mouthfeel dries out beautifully - making you grab the pint again before your hand has even left the glass. The finishing flavor is a complex blend of the aromas which were first perceived, that of mellow, cask conditioned roastiness.
All in all, this had to be CBW's finest brew in early August.

The appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that dissipated pretty quick. Streamy lace. The aroma had a good amount of roasted dark malts, substantial milk chocolate tones, some dark chocolate, some woodiness and a little bit of smoke. The flavor was towards the roasty side at first and bit into the sweetness slightly. Long roasty aftertaste and finish. The palate was about medium bodied and leaning towards a decent sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt fine. Roastiness doesn’t feel a bit bigger than expected but I didn’t mind. Overall, pretty damn good stout that I would love to have again.

Very dark blackish brown. Unfortunately the head dissipated almost immediately. No smell save a mossy smell. Tastes auite delicious. A bit burnt. A bit dry. Fleeting carbonation. Lingering malt like a porter. Not terrible. Wouldnt buy again. But would drink it if offered fo free.
