Poured from a 341ml. bottle, best before May 21, 2013.

Appearance: Thick black body, a dense brown head that pops a lot before fading completely away with no lacing. The real nice color gives it a half-point nudge.

Smell: Quite shy, can coax roasted notes, mild cocoa and light smoke.

Taste: This is all malt for sure, tail end has a bit of hickory and smoke but otherwise pretty plain.

Mouthfeel: Quite average, a bit dry, slightly watery.

Overall: Very average. Could be used as a gateway for the Guinness drinker.

Poured into a Boréale pint glass I got while in Québec City on one of my many visits. Pours velvet black with a thick two and a half finger tan head.
Smells wonderful, roasted malts, espresso, and dark chocolate, some smoke... a bit of molasses on the nose as well.... smells delicious
The taste is amazing... bitter dark chocolate, strong coffee, some smokiness, burnt caramel, and a bit of licorice with a bitter dry finish. I thought this was a very flavorful stout.
Rich and velvety, full flavored... yet easy to drink.
Always one of my favorite beers from Boréale... i only wish I could buy it here at home :(

From the bottle into an official Boreale glass in Montreal at Governer's Restaurant.

Real pitch walnut black body, making easily about two/three fingers of nice creamy tan head, good tiny bubbles in the head but not much retention and lacing.

Nose is light roasting char, mild carbon and faint burnt grain. Hints at porter.

Taste is porter and light bodied, with a good roast character. Mild coffee and grain. Wet bodied slightly, not caring much of the flavor though in the finish.

Overall not bad, seems more like a porter, could easily have again.

Pours an inky black with a quickly dissipating mahogany-coloured head. Mouthfeel is crisp and pleasant, without the viscous oiliness I'd expected from watching the pour.

Aroma is malt-forward; with predominantly roasted dark malt, coffee and chocolate tones. Well balanced taste contains all of the flavours in the aroma and is nicely smooth, with a milky sweetness but a surprisingly bitter underlying finish.

A pleasant surprise, bought randomly in a Quebecois grocery store, and definitely a beer I would seek out again.

This came as free sample with a tasting guide that included roasted grains--a nice touch. The point is that you are supposed to sample the malted grains while the beer is warming in your glass.

The appearance is jet black and the little head you get has no retention or lace. The smell is of chocolate and spoiled milk. It has a sweet taste for a stout-very little bitter notes. Like others in the style it pairs well with chocolate and spiced nuts. I could have two but no more than that, not a session stout.

A: Black with a tan head, very little retention, no lace.

S: Dark roasted coffee, licorice, brown sugar.

T: Nice coffee flavour, a little licorice, molasses, pumpernickel rye bread, modest bitterness.

M: Light to moderate body has a light, roasted acidity.

D: A good drinker.

The beer is very opaque with a finger white head and good lacing. The smell and taste is surprisingly on the absinthe side, but slight malts and little hops could also be detected. The mouthfeel is smooth, yet true to the style, also very dry. This is a very sessionable beer and a good example of a stout. Try it if you are ever in Quebec

Enjoyed on nitro at Le Fripon, Montreal.

Poured a black hue with a one finger creamy white head. There was god retention and lacing.

The smell featured a chocolate. caramel and musty hops.

The taste consisted of chocolate milk and burnt grain elements.

The mouthfeel was toward the fuller side of the style.

Overall a tasty and easy to drink stout.

Interesting brew, some amazing stregnths, starting with the highly persistant head, creamy mouthfeel, and drinkability, but the flavor is a little unusual. This brew has a malty anise, or licorice taste, with some sweetness, and very little hops. Didn't get much in the aroma department. I suspect this is one beer you either love or hate. Put me in the "love" category.

341ml bottle acquired in trade (another one I didn't write who sent it).

Poured a dark black color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of roast, chocolate, some dark fruits and light coffee. Tastes of roast, chocolate, with a very light coffee finish.

Notes from 09/22/06.

A: Nice opaque ale with light brown head. Head is weak though and doesn't last for long.

S: Interesting here. Roasted malts dominate the overall smell but I still could find some vanilla, dark chocolate and smoke aromas. Although very interesting, I found the smell a bit weak.

T: Roasted malts come upfront. It's definitively more a roasted taste than something like coffee or dark chocolate. Vanilla is still there, well hidden. Smoke is stronger than in the smell. Taste is weak too, but again, interesting.

M: Carbonation is a bit higher than what I'd expected (medium). General mouthfeel is mid to low (a bit watered). Nothing exceptional here.

D: Very high, I wouldn't have any problem to drink a six pack of those and asking for more.

I would call this a faux stout. It is missing some of the aroma and mouthfeel that I'd expect from a dry stout.

It does look beautiful with a nice beige head that leaves some spotty lace. Dark brown color.

The flavor makes up for the lack of aroma. Some coffee flavors with a touch of cocoa. The body is way too thin for the style. This is a flavorful stout but is not world class.

Best before date on bottle July 21st, 2008. Served around 55 degrees.

A: Poured a nice opaque black with some reddish tones around the stem of my Guinness pint. Very little head that is medium brown despite a fairly aggressive pour but it barely faded and stuck around during the whole time I drank it. No lacing whatsoever.

S: Nice mild aromas of roasted grain and chocolate.

T: Mild burnt toast, coffee, cocoa and a bit more assertive dark chocolate notes. Again, nothing too aggressive. Bit of bitterness at the end that fades away before a return of the slightly bitter dark chocolate that lingers on as an aftertaste.

M: Lighter body than I expect for the style with a fairly high amount of carbonation, nothing unpleasant here.

D: I could easily have more than one. Alcohol is totally hidden which makes it very easy to drink.

Overall, better than what I remembered. Actually, this is pretty darn good. I suspect that I never had it warm enough to really unleash the flavors. Beats Guinness and cheaper. Also, pretty good with food.

Had at Mondial de la Biere 2007.

Pours a clear brown/red, thick tan head, huge lace sheets on the glass, nitro style, great retention. Smell is sweet and malty, chocolate, bit of vanilla, roast, bready, pretty light but pleasant. Taste is nice, light chocolate milk, roast, sweet caramel, vanilla, dry finish. Mouthfeel is light bodied with low carbonation, very smooth. Not too bad.
