it's oak-brown with some ruby tinge in the light; a small off-white clings around the rim and leaves some lacing. pungent ripe bananas dominate the nose. tastes like fresh baked banana bread with a very mild bitterness. finishes slick. it's refreshing.
great stuff. on-tap there's a little more crispness in the finish, but it's still very good bottled. i don't think i drink enough of this style.

22oz bomer thanks to Bendurgin. Poured into Goose pint glass.
A - Pours a light brown, a fingers worth of white head, a thick ring around the glass, and a thin film on top.
S - Burnt malts, slight dark fruit, bananas, slight tart, brown sugars.
T - Slight tart up front, dark brown sugars, malts, bananas, licorice. Not sure if I dig the tart notes, would rather have more malt and burnt sugars. FFF does this style right, so I'm comparing.
M - Light, crisp, medium carbonation, creamy finish.
D - Good, not great. I really like this style, however, FFF and their dark lagers are superior to this. Not really digging the tart notes at all.

22oz bomber
A) Pours with a very thin, nearly nonexistent head. Visible active carbonation. Hazy body. Mahogany in color.
S) Bananas. Apple. Bready. Toasty.
T) Subtle banana. Toasted grain. Spices - cloves and nutmeg. Mellow malt sweetness throughout. Finishes with a pleasant tree fruit sweetness.
M) medium body. Fizzy. Fairly smooth.
D) A great beer. Very drinkable. I'd have another.

Poured roughly into my Aventinus glass this dunkel raises two fingers of creamy nougat colored head atop a crystal clear caramel brown body. Spotty lacing. Surprised that there is no cloudy murky body.
Very fragrant - bananas, banana bread, cloves, spice notes reach me before I even raise the glass.
Flavor is warm banana bread with spices. Caramel flavor comes out and lingers along with a very slight bitterness. Nice but it seems to be missing the thicker tangy yeast flavors I appreciate in dunkels
Creamy but thin mouthfeel. Strikes me as a little watery.
High drinkability.
A pleasant ale but a bit thinner and lighter than I would prefer. I don't know if they were going for a lighter and more summery ale but it doesn't stand up to my cloudy yeasty dunkelweizen faves.

Received this brew from the ever generous BeerTruth. I'm not a huge fan of Dunkelweizens but he assured me it was good. Drank from my Surly nonic pint glass.
Appearance- Pours a hazy dark reddish brown with a beautiful one finger super creamy off-white head. A perfect half finger cap and collar remain the entire beer along with thick sheets of coated lacing.
Smell- Lightly spicy with those unmistakable yeasty Weizen notes of banana and clove. A nice toasted maltiness as well with a light bit of cocoa and nuttiness. As I really breath the beer in deep I definitely get a nice peat smokiness but its definitely subtle. Nothing too crazy here but a fairly nice smelling nose.
Taste- Hmmm, a bit different than what I was expecting but nice. The yeast and banana notes are VERY light compared to the nose. The smoke isn't really strong either as I think the slight fruitiness and slight smokiness really offset one another. Its nutty and toasty with a sort of lingering husk and black pepper spice. The finish is long and lingering as a somewhat charred, somewhat citric bitterness that coats my tongue.
Mouthfeel- Very creamy and rich with a nice full body and a sort of tingly aggressive carbonation that really cuts through the big body.
Drinkability- Very interesting beer that I enjoyed. I think the smoke and Weizen aspects aren't a match made in heaven but none-the-less fun to try. The body and look of the beer are top notch though, that's for sure. Thanks much Adam!

Pours a dark brown with a pretty thick creme head that falls quickly. Flavor comes off with malts on the first hit and then morphs into a smoked edge that really hits me more like a rauchbier than anything else. Smoked and meaty though it calms down a bit fairly soon. Or perhaps my palate gets used to it. Feel is slick and thicker. Carbonation is fairly full. This is a tasty beer, but i'm not feeling that it's giving other dunkels a run for its money. Still worth drinking though.

Extremely aggressively carbonated as a very soft pour nets me seven fingers of foamy, lightly browned head (including one above the rim of my glass) and some foam overflow on my desk. The beer is a dark plum color that shows a hazy, red amber color when held up to the light. The aroma has lots of clove, a touch of up front banana, a toasty malt character and a definite smokiness in the finish. The smokiness has overtones of burning plastic to it, though it never gets really out of hand and really reminds me of Peat smoked malt. Definitely interesting, certainly not bad, but I was not expecting the smoke.
The taste has a sweetness to it up front with some light clove notes, the smokiness then kicks in adding smoky flavors as well as phenolic notes that seem to be a little harsh at times. This has a rich maltiness to it up front that is quite nice (unfortunately this is quickly drowned out by the salty peat smoke). The peat smoke really lingers on in the palate too and interferes with subsequent sips; it is really hard to pull out any other flavors because of this.
A very interesting interpretation of a Dunkel Weizen. I think that beech-wood smoked malt would have been a better choice here as it would have melded better with the traditional Weizen flavors (indeed I have had good smoked Weizens in Bamberg before). Ultimately the Peat-smoked malt clashes with the rest of the beer, such that this really just doesn't work for me. I do like the attempt though as it is an interesting try.

22oz bottle at 58 degrees.
Pours dark amber with a mahogany hue. Clear and dark when held to the light. A half inch head of tan settles slowly to a solid skimcoat on the surface. A few smeared ropes of foam sustain throughout the glass.
Aromatics lead off with caramel, cocoa, bannana, and clove.
Fresh, doughy malt and a hint of smoke follow through.
Medium bodied with a creamy mouthfeel. A bit slick and tacky.
Bready malt, cocoa-dusted banannas, caramel, and cloves start the palate. Hints of nougat, caramelized malt, and warming alcohol follow through.
Finishes with doughy malt, caramel drizzeled bannanas, and warming spice.
Yum. Tasting uber fresh, and the bananna/clove balance is right on.

A: Pours a deep reddish/brown/almost purple in color. A one finger head forms and carbonation is evident. Decent lacing.
S: Typical banana/clove smell, with a bit of emphasis on the clove. A hint of smokiness is also present.
T: The clove and smokiness is very prevalent in this one. The smokiness is subtle, but present enough that you taste it. The banana is relegated to the background, and I don't think that's a bad thing in this beer. It's pretty good.
M: Nice and crisp.
D: This is a solid example of the style, and another nice brew coming out of Portsmouth. This is tasty.

A: Pours a dark maroonish plum, almost purple color with not much head, but a nice film on top. Lots of bubbles hugging th edges of the glass. Pretty damn nice lacing.
S: Dark fruit malt with a distinct smokyness that overtakes the senses. Wheaty banana clove like notes come through but after a strong swirl.
T/M: Sharp smokyness interlaced with the normal dunkel banana clove flavors. More clove pervades here with the banana notes taking a back seat. Dry finish to this beer with a somewhat smokeyness in the aftertaste. Smooth on the palate with a body that's seeking to be bigger than it really is. Hop notes and bitterness are noticeable in the finish.
D: Drinkable, but for some reason I wasn't into it that much. Not that this is a bad beer, just not my favorite style. On tap would definitely do this beer wonders.

Review from notes.
A: This beer is a hazy brown color with one finger of beige head on top, moderate retention and minimal lacing
S: A good amount of banana on the nose with some brown sugar and spices, mostly cloves.
T: Similar to the aroma, very clean with bananas and cloves, lots of malty goodness here, some more brown sugar and a little bit of bread.
M: Medium bodied with medium to high carbonation.
O: Very tasty and easy drinking. Had no problem putting it down at all. Wish I could have stayed longer and sampled some more of what Portsmouth had on tap.

Poured on-tap and served in a tumbler pint, the beer is a dark brown color with ruby highlights and a beige head. Good cling of lacing along the glass as you drink. Light nose of nutty sweetness. The flavors are smooth and rich, with a deep layering. Date and raising fruity characters on a toffee sweet backbone. This brew is a malt bomb. Rich, sweet aftertaste leading into a smooth and creamy finish. Tasty beer.

A. Pours brown with amber with a thin creamy head that quickly dissipates to a ring of foam.
S. Tons of bananas with some brown sugar and caramel with some light acidity.
T. It's like beers best version of bananas foster - creamy banana with caramelized brown sugar with a touch of acidity/bitterness on the tail to finish an enjoyable sip.
M. Medium bodied with a fairly high level of carbonation.
D. I could put these back all night. This and the Blue Beery were my favorite beers that I was able to sample at Portsmouth. I took a growler and two bottles of this beer to go. The bottled version wasn't quite as good as the draft version - less banana flavor and a bit more acidity. That said, I enjoyed every last drop of this beer.

Presentation: Poured straight from the tap into a Portsmouth Brewery pint glass at the brewery. Served slighty chilled on the outdoor patio.
Appearance: Cloudy dark brown in color. Color is a bit dull and hazy. Slight lacing with very little retention.
Aroma: Pretty basic here. Bananna bread and clove with a bit of astrigency. Nicely balanced and not as sweet as I expected.
Taste: Much like the aroma, bananna bread and clove dominate. More astrigency than most dunkels I have had. Some nice balance.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and smooth. Nice crispness.
Drinkability: The moderate ABV and nice light flavors make this east to drink a couple of.
Overall, a nice, light dunkelweizen. Nothing too special but with a solid flavor profile. Nice option to enjoy with a meal in the warm weather.

A pretty good representation of the style, on tap at the Portsmouth Brewery today. Poured a dark copper, with a touch of haze, and a 1/4" fine, tan head. Head lasts fairly well, and laces the glass a bit. Nose gives off the typical clove/banana combo nicely! Good mouthfeel...nothing to detract from the drinking experience.... Upon tasting, more of the banana/clove combo comes though, along with some malty sweetness at the start. As it warms even some caramel comes through. Good lingering finish; an easy-drinking bier!
