Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #55 (August 2011):

Gose is a rather rare German style of beer, similar to other Weissbiers, which focus on a large portion of wheat; how- ever, a standout difference is the addition of spices and salt. Portsmouth’s starts with a cloudy yellow straw body and creamy lacing, and a wheaty nose with green banana, sweet herbal notes and a dusting of spice. Crisp up front, creamy mouthfeel beneath. Light bodied. Big smack of lemon bite, sweet malts, soft coriander and an underlying saltiness. Mild green apple, too. Fairly dry overall, but really dries up in the finish. Moreish. Delicious. Insanely drink- able. One of the best examples of the style we’ve had to date.

I had this beer poured from bomber into a tulip glass.

A: Orangish Hue, Passes Some Light, White Head Ring, Some Lacing

S: Pineapple, Pears, Apples, Yeast

T: Pineapple, Apples, Pears, Yeast

M: Decent Carbonation, Light to Medium Bodied, Lightly Sweet, Mild Yeasty

Overall, a really nice Gose...add some spice and it could be a saison. Worth Trying.

The beer pours a hazy golden yellow with a thin halo of white foam. The nose is yeasty, but sweet. The taste is similar to a saison, but different. There is a lot of yeast, but it's balanced by all the beer has going on. It's slightly tart, salty, and a slight B.O., but well balanced by the fruit from the yeast and sweetness from the malt. Very drinkable, summery ale and it completely hits the spot. There is NO bitterness, but it still balances out nicely. Great beer to grab a togo bottle of.

22 oz bomber into a couple of glasses.

Pours a clear copper, with a ½ finger of bright white foamy head. This maintains a light looking frothiness, which leaves back a gentle cascade of spotty lacing. The aroma smells of spice, fruit, crisp wheat, and some more herbal accents.

The taste opens up a bit more, with a crisp snap of wheat, fruity green apple, spices, and an underlying salt-like mineral feel, which picks up considerably as this warms. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and sharp on the tongue, with a smooth firm creaminess to it that rides along the back. This feels just right.

This was a pretty solid take on a Gose, with an interesting flavor profile that was much more quenching feeling and drinkable then you would think at first. I’ve had a couple of these now and I will continue to seek more out. It’s definitely a style that has my attention.

Thanks to Kegatron for sharing this bomber with me. Poured into a matching Portsmouth snifter, this brew appears a clear golden color with a white frothy head. There is some yellowish coloration around the sides and a light swirl revives a finger of head.

The smell is fruity with almost a bubblegum candy sweetness. There is a very light note of apple vinegar and some minerals (sea salt?) The taste gets progressively more salty with every sip but never gets overbearing. Some minor fruit accents are evident a bit like apple blended with the previously described candy bubblegum notes.

This is a light bodied brew with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is seemingly no alcohol inclusion throughout. This was fairly easy drinking with the salt addition really coming out as it warms. I have not had a ton of Gose offering but of the ones I've tried, this one had the best saltiness factor but lacked a little bit in overall depth.

First time trying this style. Poured 22oz into pint glass.

A- Pours straw yellow. Very slight haze. Lots of carbonating bubbles. Fluffy white head that leaves nice lacing on the glass.

S- Smells a little musky throughout. Sweetness starts to come through with some citrus and lemon notes. Maybe a bit of spice at the end.

T- Lemon, citrus flavors up front. Sweet with a wheat undertone to it. Seems to have a little bit of funk taste mixed in somewhere. Does have a bit of a salt taste at the very end but is pretty mild.

M- Light body. Lots of carbonation. Get a mild salty aftertaste.

O- Very interesting style. Lots of good flavors with a weird salt taste thrown in. Still everything blends nicely for a good drink. Very refreshing for sure.

Poured from the bottle into a Chimay goblet.

Appearance: Pours a slightly cloudy yellow/golden color with a finger of fluffy white head that fades to a ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell: Light and crisp, some fruity notes along with a mild herbal quality. Slightly sweet, the fruit dominates the smell.

Taste: Very light and crisp with some bready malt. The fruit from the smell doesn't really show up here. There is a very mild herbal taste with a slight bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with aggressive, tingly carbonation and a very dry finish.

Overall: This one could have used a little bit more flavor. The herbal notes weren't strong enough. Nice and refreshing, but I'm not sure I'd have it again.

A: Thick white head that recedes quickly without leaving lacing.

S: Wheat and maybe a touch of coriander.

T: Bready, wheaty malt with the faintest touch of coriander (or am I imagining the coriander?). A very delicate saltiness at first that builds to an less pleasant level as I drink more. It turns a bit bitter (from the salt) towards the end and leaves my lips feeling like I've been swimming in the ocean.

M: Light and dry.

O: This bottle is maybe two months old, and maybe that affects the taste. I find the salt a little overwhelming, although the beer would probably be quite good with food. Alone, I didn't much care for it after the first few sips, but that would probably be the case for me with any gose.

Poured from 22oz bomber picked up on a trip to NH, into a pint glass.

Pours a medium to dark bronze - just looks like a combination of light and dark together. Some white foam, settles down to just a ring around the outside. Citrus smell. Wheaty. Lemon scented. Light clean taste. Citrus overtones and throughout.

Nice style (new for me) easy drinking beer.
