Medium-bodied and black in color, this unique stout is brewed with thirty pounds of lactose, an unfermentable milk sugar that imparts a very smooth, roasty character in this “sweet” stout.

Poured from a 22oz. bottle, which was purchased at the brewpub on 6/25/07 and consumed on 7/7/07, into a mug glass.
A: The beer is a deep dark brown color with almost no head and a very thin lace left on the glass.
S: The aroma is of creamy chocolate and dark roasted malts.
T: The taste is very malty and creamy as you would expect from the style, with strong flavors of chocolate and coffee. There’s very little hops presence but such is normal from a Milk Stout. The after-tasty has a dry dark chocolate bitter-sweet flavor.
M: Very smooth with a little crispness, medium-to-heavy body, very light carbonation, dry and sticky finish.
D: A little tasty, goes down easily, slightly filling, good kick, good representation of style, this one might appeal to Guinness fans and I’m going to hope that such was the target when this beer was brewed. Since I really enjoyed the other 5 beers I’ve had from Portsmouth Brewery, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. However, as much as I can appreciate the craftsmanship of the beer, I didn’t really like it very much.

Appearance: Pours a fudge brown color with ruby highlights; the modest cap leaves a few squiggles of lace
Smell: Milk chocolate and tart cherry
Taste: Milk chocolate, up front, with the tart cherry flavors taking over in the mid-palate; chocolate-covered tart cherries linger into the finish
Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation
Overall: This bottle has a few years of age and the lactose has become lactic; I understand that was not the original intent but I kind of like it
