Medium-bodied and black in color, this unique stout is brewed with thirty pounds of lactose, an unfermentable milk sugar that imparts a very smooth, roasty character in this “sweet” stout.

Per tradition, the family, naproxen, and I hit up Portsmouth the day after Thanksgiving. This was my favorite on tap that day, so I had to take a bottle home.
22 oz. bottle poured into a nonic.
Pours an absolute jet black with a quick one finger light brown head that falls to a thin layer of small bubbles. Some stick, but not a whole lot. Aroma consists of roasted malts, coffee beans, some sweet creamer...me likey. Taste is very similar. Lots of roasted malt and grains with some cane sugar and sweet lactose. Some cocoa powder with a bit of earthy hops towards the end. I wish the coffee smell was on the tongue as well, but unfortunately that's not the case. So silky smooth, just like Duke's victory against UConn that day. Light to medium body with a very subtle carbonation. Very solid milk stout for sure, probably one of the better ones I've had. Another successful post turkey day Portsmouth trip :)

Appearance: Pours a fudge brown color with ruby highlights; the modest cap leaves a few squiggles of lace
Smell: Milk chocolate and tart cherry
Taste: Milk chocolate, up front, with the tart cherry flavors taking over in the mid-palate; chocolate-covered tart cherries linger into the finish
Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation
Overall: This bottle has a few years of age and the lactose has become lactic; I understand that was not the original intent but I kind of like it
