Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall New Glarus Signature Pilsner Glass.

Appearance: Pours a dark blackish brown with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid three fingers of tan head with decent retention. Leaves a good amount of creamy lacing around the glass.

Smell: A dark roasted and fairly sweet coffee infused aroma. Dark roasted malts with good hints of coffee, chocolate, burnt toast, caramel, toffee, cereal grains, biscuit, milk, and nuts. Some fairly sharp hints of smoke and wood as well. Sweet burnt sugars add some more sweetness with a little vanilla. Subtle hints of grassy hops in the background. A pretty solid sweet stout aroma.

Taste: Like the nose hints, a dark roasty stout that leans towards the sweet side. Sweet dark roasted malts with notes of coffee, chocolate, burnt caramel, toffee, toast, cereal grains, biscuit, lactose milk, and nuts. Mlats are rounded out by a nice taste of smoke and wood. Sweet burnt sugar and a little vanilla. Hop presence is pretty tame with a little earthy grass towards the finish. Definitely on the sweet dark malty side. Pretty solid.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Nicely creamy, slick, and smooth. Not overly syrupy.

Overall: A pretty solid coffee beer. Definitely not thick like an imperial stout. Its more like a sweet/milk stout, but a pretty good one.

Pours a thick, off-tan head that settles away with a bit of lacing. Huge coffee aroma; floral and acidic. Black. Starts tart, acidic, and floral; mainly coffee right up front. Moves into a nice roasted malt middle, just a touch of hops, and the finish moves back into coffee. As it lingers, the roasted malt subsides, and hop bitterness is the only thing left.

I like this one alot because it's a great mix of coffee and stout. The coffee is assertive, but paired masterfully with the roasted malt; the transition between the coffee and the malt is so seamless. Just a great, silken mouthfeel, too.
Honestly, I'll take this over Founder's Breakfast Stout; WAY more balanced.

12oz bottle poured into a Sprecher snifter glass

Appearance- Jet black in color with a finger of kahki heads that dissipates into a small ring that leaves minimal lacing.

Smell- Tons of black coffee with a hint a sweet malt.

Taste- All black coffee. It kind of makes me sad that there is no sweet or bitter sweetness to balance out the black coffee taste.

Mouthfeel- Kind of light, drinks more like a porter with a good amount of carbonation.

Overall- Definitly a 1 dimensional beer that lacks balance and complexity.

New Glarus Coffee Stout

Poured from 12 ounce bottle into accompanying NG glassware. Served slightly chilled...

A) Very dark brown to black in color. A finger of nice milkshake head. Excellent retention and ample lacing.

S) Roasted malt and a good amount of fresh ground coffee.

T) The taste is very similar to the aroma, but there's definitely a touch of hops in there as well. Light coffee aftertaste.

M) I personally didn't find it as full-bodied as advertised. Perhaps just a little bit too much carbonation, but that's a minor concern. Pretty smooth and easy drinking.

O) This is a fantastic coffee stout, and you certainly can't beat the price of a six pack. Glad to recommend this beer.

Pours an opaque brown with minimal amber and garnet highlights and a half inch foamy tan head that leaves minimal lacing.

Roast malt, nuts, coffee, and chocolate form the initial aroma. Dark cherries become evident as it warms.

The flavor follows suit, with roast malt, coffee, and chocolate ending fairly nutty and a touch dry and acrid. Cereal grain notes add intrigue.

Body is moderate, with carbonation a touch higher than expected, lifting the rich flavor from the palate. There's noticeable alcohol warmth.

Better than most coffee stouts. Not overly acrid, and good chocolatey flavor.

Dark brown with a tall head of rocky dark khaki foam. Nice retention.

Complex smell of caramel, chocolate, smoke and coffee.

The taste is wonderful, but does lack in the coffee department. Chocolatey, lightly roasty, smoke, light coffee, some vanilla and a hint of alcohol. Has to be the most complex and flavorful american stout I've had.

Medium bodied, soft and smooth carbonation.

Drinks very easily and chock full of flavor. I wish more of the coffee was here, but the overall product is still wonderful.

This is one of New Glarus’ darkest offerings that also have national fame as one of the tastiest stouts. Coffee Stout is an often asked about brew during the wintertime hitting shelves before equally tasty Snowshoe and Road Slush. So before Road Slush hits the shelf, let’s enjoy some Coffee Stout.

It pours a dark brown/black color with a thin beige head. The aroma is rather mild but contains coffee, sweet malts, and robust malts. The smell is very inviting much like a good sweet milk stout.

Certainly a unique tasting stout as the texture is lighter than a traditional stout but just as tasty. There is more of an overall sweetness rather that a robustness in the flavor. The coffee is very nicely blended with the rest of the ingredients that creates a slight coffee aftertaste.

A tasty coffee stout that is also light in texture without compromising the flavor is awesome! I’ve never been one for warm beer so I did drink this chilled, but I hear it’s highly recommended to try this brew at room temperature. If you’re not a coffee lover don’t worry, neither am I. I’ve never seen the appeal of hot coffee, but as an ingredient in beer, it’s delicious. Lots of local ingredients only add to the awesomeness. If you’ve never tried this, you don’t know what you are missing!

2012 vintage, served cellar temp in a Duvel tulip

A - pours a dark brown with a large amount of dark brown head, fades to leave a good amount of lacing

S - very nice amount of coffee and malt, not overpowering at all, a small amount of chocolate at the end.

T - coffee, chocolate, malt up front, great balance of these flavors with a little bit of hops to finish

M - incredibly smooth, a little bit of bitterness in the very end

O - I've been waiting for this one to come back, and I'm glad it's here. This is a great example of a coffee stout, incredible balance and feel. Will definitely stock up on this one, especially at this price point.

Beer pours a dark brown/nearly black with a medium tan head. Smell is a nice mix of coffee and chocolate, pretty nice. The flavor is a bit of a disappointment after the nice smell - it's pretty one dimensional with coffee and not much else backing it up. Beer isn't overly roasty or sweet and doesn't have much of the chocolate that I got in the nose. Mouthfeel is a little on the thin side for the style with nice carbonation. Overall, this is an okay coffee stout that is far from bad, but isn't really all that spectacular either. It's simple and very coffee-forward.

a: believe it or not, it's a dark brown almost coffee colored. a thin tan head settles into a ring.

s: sweet chocolate malts and coffee.

t: more chocolate than coffee, still tasty coffee though.

m: seems a little thin and lacks a coffee bitterness or even a dark chocolate bitterness would of helped this beer.

o: very drinkable, but no breakfast stout.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a mason jar mug.

A- Pours an extremely deep dark brown with a light tan head. No light penetration.

S- Somewhat of a light scent but what is there is very malty. This stout has a very chocolatey aroma. Some hints of caramel are also present along with a sweet scent of bread.

T- A nice and sweet tasting stout. Starts of chocolatey with some strong mokah flavors swirlled in with some tofee and caramel notes. Ends in a nice smooth light cofee finish. Not a very strong bite from the cofee's biterness like in some stouts of the same style. More rich then anything else.

M- Has a rich mouthfeel with medium carbonation and a lighter feel to it.

O- A very good coffee stout. Very drinkable and almost sessionable for a stout. The coffee flavor is very nice and mild compared to a lot of other cofee stouts and the mouthfeel isn't nearly as creamy and heavy. Very nice for an after dinner beer or a beer to go along with desert. I would definetly get this again if I can. Truely a perfect cofee stout.

Thanks to goryshkewych for this bottle.

A: Pours a nice opaque black with the thinnest of born translucence around the edges. There is about a half finger of tan head that wants to linger around for a bit. I'm getting some solid lacing as it drinks.

S: The nose is coffee, figs, toast, and roasted malt. There is also that very distinctive New Glarus earthiness in there. The coffee isn't overpowering which I appreciate. This is really solid.

T:This beer starts off with a blast of high carbonation and toast. As the carbonation fades, the coffee comes on strong. It mixes with hints of chocolate, fig, and roasted chestnuts. The finish is that distinctive earthiness mixed with coffee and mocha.

M: Medium bodied beer. The carbonation is spot on, the flavors coat nicely, and the finish is smooth.

O: This is a great coffee stout. It's under appreciated, and possibly one of the best coffee beers on the market. I'd drink this brew all the time if I could get a hold of it.

This one has been on my wants list forever big thanks to phisigben for the opportunity.
Pours a solid black with a creamy white head that slowly recedes to a cap and leaves spotty lace on the way down. Smells of coffee, chocolate, caramel, vanilla, and a hint of lactose. Taste is mildly roasty with a coffee edge. Chocolate caramel vanilla a hint of smoke all play supporting roles. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet sugary mouthfeel. Nice easy drinking stout that I'm glad I got to try. Maybe not work the three years I waited for it, but good just the same.

poured cold and aggressively from the bottle an opaque cola black to a dogfish head signature glass with a finger and a half, big bubbled, foamy, tan, relatively long lasting head

aroma of a mild, creamy espresso with a bit of cocoa in the wayback.

very subtle, sweet creamy espresso forward. hints of smoke, cocoa and vanilla(?)

medium to light bodied, creamy smooth, sweet, no bitter, medium carbonation. very nice.

overall - great coffee beer, subtle. less is more.

For whatever reason, this one wasn't on my radar even though it is a local beer. I had one the other night and like it enough to get some more soon although it wasn't my favorite coffee stout because I generally like my coffee stouts a little stronger.

The two things that I liked best about this beer were the smell and the taste. Although it had a nice strong coffee taste/smell, there was a little bit of sweetness to make it a little more interesting and to make it feel like you weren't just drinking a cup of coffee. I wish the abv was higher but it was still solid.

Bottled 9 November 2010. Hoping it's held up well. Enjoyed 3 December 2011, reviewed from notes.

Pours very dark brown, essentially black, with one finger of brownish tan head. Decent retention, not much lacing.

Smells really good. A lovely balance of slightly bitter coffee and dark roasted malts. Has a distinct hazelnut smell as well. Smooth and balanced.

Taste is a tad rougher than the smell, but still quite good. Coffee is a little weaker, bitterness from the dark roast is more present. I'd like a bit more oomph to the flavor.

Mouthfeel: kinda light for a stout, with medium-low carbonation. Feels watery and slick, not as full and rich as I want it to be.

This is a nice coffee stout. It's definitely on the thin side, both in feel and in flavor. But it's good all around, and definitely worth drinking.

Beer is dark brown almost black with a thin head of small bubbles, tan, no lacing, low retention low carbonation.

Aroma is sweet, mildly roasty, a mild coffee-ness to it, decent.

Beer is thin and light on the coffee, it is not very sweet, not very bitter, not very much of anything, this is a plain stout in my opinion. Nothing else. moving on.

Bottled January 2009

A- Head settles in at around an inch tall, light mocha in color. Beer itself is a dark opaque brown. Decent head retention and good lacing.

S- Smells of coffee with hints of cola.

T- Coffee and chocolate roastiness don't hit until the end of each sip but even then it's kind of faint. Slight oxidation, but not enough to take away from the experience.

M- Smooth, medium to medium-thin mouthfeel for the style. Low end of carbonation.

D/O- Honestly I don't know how I got this old of a bottle...I could have swore I got this specific one at the brewery a month ago. Either way, tasted pretty similar to a fresh one so I'm reviewing it as such. Pretty "sessionable" coffee stout if there ever was one. Could be used/seen as a good gateway beer.

Bottle from Reilly's in Madison, shared with Chris. Substantial coffee taste and aroma. Good think its very good coffee.Some cocoa to make it go down and impart sweetness. A bit light mouthfeel. Very lacey. Carbonation right there. Good drinkability. Good after dinner beer.

Pours a dark, dark brownish black, very thin looking, small one finger head that subsides quickly, lacing left behind around the edges.
A nice, healthy dose of coffee on the nose of this small hints of coco on the back end but mostly fresh brewed coffee. Smaller amount of roast than what was expected.
Coffee pretty much all the way through, small hints of chocolate in the finish but then even that is over taken by coffee
I did not like the mouth feel on this, it reminded me of an iced black coffee in which all the ice melted. Also, carbonation was a little bit overwhelming for lite/medium body that this beer had.

The smell and taste were on, the appearance and mouth feel brought it down. Not the best coffee beer I had but a solid offering.

Pours a very deep, chestnut brown - call it coffee with a touch of milk. A half-finger, frothy light-tan head with very nice retention tops it off. Solid lacing.

Lots of coffee notes in the nose. Not the overly aggressive, charred espresso aromas that accompany bigger stouts, but a smoother more restrained coffee scent. There's a little chocolate in there, too. Totally blind, I'd probably peg this for a milk stout.

Sweet, milky coffee in the front end, with coffee bitterness in the back. Chocolate malts compliment that coffee flavor nicely. Again, this is rather similar to a milk stout. Overall though, the coffee seems a little muted, almost faded There's also a slightly fruity, berry-like aftertaste that shouldn't jive with the other flavors at play, but is actually pretty nice.

Mouthfeel is on the thin side, though not terrible for the style. A little less carbonation would be good, though this is very easy to put down.

A totally fine, very drinkable, and unremarkable stout from New Glarus. A little more coffee would really push this to a new level for me.

12oz bottle into a DFH Snifter

A- Pours a pretty solid black with slight hues of red in the light. Tons of carbonation sticking to the sides of the glass and create a small 1 finger khaki head that dissipates fairly quickly.

S- Dark sweet roasted malts with a good amount of dark burnt coffee. Slight chocolate notes and hops but nothing crazy. A very basic but great smelling coffee stout.

T- Tastes just like the aroma. Up front creamy roasted malts create a nice body with a strong bitter black coffee flavor to compliment them. Also has a strong bitter hop presence that blends very nicely with the overall beer.

M- Medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a nice strong bitter almost dry chalky finish.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a mini pint (~13oz) glass.

Pours nice a black but with some brown coloring when held to the light. A small half finger of foam slowly fades away to a cream lace. Smells deliciously sweet and malty with a slight bit of fruit subtle in the end of the smell.

First sip is a notable flavor of sweet malt that gives way to some citrusy hops. The entire sip is underlined by pleasant coffee bitterness and that truly comes out, intertwined with a light hop bitterness at the end of the sip. Some slight creaminess near the beginning of the drink helps enforce the coffee characteristics. Would take a hint from the bottle and serve this one at a bit of a warmer temperature, as it showcases the coffee flavors more.

Great mouthfeel; nice, bright and airy instead of a sludgy stout consistency.

Great stout and it's way different than their Road Sludge. Different flavor profile makes this one interesting and not just another coffee stout.

Poured into a tulip from a 12 oz bottle. Appears a dark brown color with an impressive tan head. The head is about two fingers thick, has great staying power and leaves some nice lacing.

The nose is fairly muted, but obviously has notes of coffee, as well as some nice roasted malts. Slightly disappointed here, but what little smell there is here is inviting. The taste has roasted malts, some coffee and a slight balancing factor. There is just a little bit too much sweetness for me in a coffee stout, but I'll deal with it.

Mouthfeel is lighter than I expected, with a higher level of carbonation. There is a slight film left on the inside of your mouth, but it disappears quickly. Overall, an enjoyable beer, but by far not the best stout I've experienced. The coffee flavor adds a nice note for drinking in the morning, but just doesn't quite do it for me.
