750ml wax dipped bottle care of younger35. Split with the wife and poured into wine glasses. This brew appears a pretty clear ruby red color with less than a finger of white fizzy head that dissolves fast leaving just a thin layer of bubbles sitting atop. Constantly rising bubbles provides a lasting ring around the inside perimeter of the glass and a bit of patchy lace clings to the glassware.

The aroma of this brew immediately reminds me of luden's cherry cough drops. Medicinal cherry nose has a little bit of spice added in the backend smelling like cinnamon. It also has a bit of an earthy quality that brings it all together with a pleasant aroma overall that is a mix of fresh cherries meets cherry medicine.

The taste is a cherry mixture of sweet and sour upfront. Just like in the aroma, the cherry flavor is a mixture of medicinal cherry along with a fresh, natural cherry pit flavor. Through the medium light body there is a bit of a spiced flavor that is somewhat reminescent of cinnamon with a touch of oak. The tartness of this brew along with the spiced character makes this one finish quite dry with an aftertaste of cherry pits and spices left lingering in the mouth.

Quite drinkable with a lively level of carbonation. Overall a fine example of the style. My only gripe is that I find myself half way through the experience drinking it faster just because it starts to get a bit too acidic and agitate the back of my throat.

Cellared for one year.

A: Brownish-red with a slightly pink head; very little retention; slight leg.

S: Tart cherries, jube-jube candy fruitiness, brown sugar.

T: Light tartness, sour cherries, pleasant fruity esters, woody, slightly bready with a hint of brown sugar.

M: Well-attenuated, moderate body has a slight acidity and a dry finish.

D: Very drinkable.

Thanks to BuckeyeNation for including this beer in a very generous trade and giving me the chance to have this again and finally review it. This beer is even better than I remember it- extremely rich and spicy with laser-like cherry flavors. Almost tastes like a slightly less spicy version of a Gluhkriek there is so much spicy goodness in the beer. Pours a hazy red leaning toward brown a bit. Smells of sour cherries, cream, spicebox notes, and a slight cheesy funk, probably from the aged hops. The taste is downright magnificent. Glorious sweet and sour cherries with an almost vinous finish, a touch more of that cheesy funk, and lots of spice- clove, allspice, pepper, cinnamon. Complex, deeply flavored and long, and with a nice creamy mouthfeel that ends in a spicy snap. More proof that complex Belgian style brews can be masterfully done in the U.S. A wonderful beer.

Poured into Bruery Snifter

Poirus 1/2 finger of pink hued creamy white head. Fades t a ring and has good retention. Leaves some nice lace walls. Color is a hazed raspberry hued brown. Very nice looking.

Aroma: The cherries are amazing. Some yeast, but mainly fruity. It is mainly tart and filled with fruits. Very fresh. It is pretty solid. Wow. The cherries are so amazing.

Taste: Fresh cherries (along with some other fruit flavors). I get some yeast here, but not a lot. A nice malt backbone. This beer is fresh and the fruit is amazing. It doesn't have a lot of flavors, but this beer is drinking great.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and refreshing. Medium bodied with a nice amount of carbonation. Ends a little dry and fruity, somewhat clean.

Overall, this beer is fantastic. I have had it multiple times and it always delivers. It is just so amazing. This is a beer I love to have access to. Very drinkable and it packs a huge fresh flavor.

Sample courtesy of a travelling fellow beer lover. This brew pours a lustrous brownish, purplish red with a medium thick and fizzy beige head that dissipates steadily. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet cherries blended with other tart fruit, sweet spice, and wheat. Medium-bodied with a complex fruit character of fresh cherries and strawberries along with spices and malts. Light wheat and yeast undertones at times. The finish is richly fruity and tart and leaves a lingering cherry aftertaste. Quite simply the best Fruit beer I have had.

Oh what a joy this stuff is! Its been a while since the last time I had this stuff, all I remember is, "me want more". I take it all in stride as the bottle itself is awesome with the bottle dipped in red wax covering the cap and neck. Very cool. Then the color is very gem-like when put up to the light, glowing with reddish, pinky/orange thats slightly opaque with a very unique pinkish/orangy head of light bubbly froth, with some large bubbles, and poured out to be about two inches high and settled down to a small bubbly froth with some curtain-like lacing of tiny-tight bubbles.
Smells of nice fruity tart cherries and a bit sour, like a lemonade.
Taste is a heavenly nice sweetly sour and tart cherry thats easily smooth and a bit like a fruit juice or wine cooler but much nicer flavor. It's medium body and generously carbonated with a huge sweet feel in the front, then just lays down smooth and slightly drying to the finish leaving a great sour tart bite in the back of my mouth. Take a cherry lambic and lighten it up a bit and here ya go, a very interestingly, very drinkable treat of yumminess.

750 green wine bottle received in a recent trade with brdc.. I have a couple others in the cellar from umustdrink.. tonight I am sharing a Belgian Red with a coworker... Mine out of my New Belgium snifter.

Cap it and immediatly .. I can smell it from 3 feet away. Fizzy pour produces an orange/burgandy color brew.. head is a light tan.. not pink as expected.

Aroma is McConnellsburg Johnnie's Diner Cherry pie.. overwhelming deep cherry with touches of dough and vanilla ... a little cherry wine as it warms. I don't know how else to describe this brew.

Flavor is thick cherry without ever feeling like a cough syrup.. tastes very natural albeit concentrated.. I honestly believe there are a pound of cherries in every bottle... Sweet for sure.. but it is a sweetness that ties it together. Almonds show with room temperature. High carbonation works to cut through the sweeness.. I am getting quite a bit of dough and vanilla.. touches of cinnamon. I could drink this for days before getting tired.. but I do see an end of the tunnel. 1/2 a bottle was fine for tonight.. just enough to make me want another.. but I will really need to be in the mood. Moreover, it makes me want to share it with friends again. I had 3 bottles of the WBR after my trip to Madison in '06 .. I drank them way too fast with people who didn't appreciate the brew. It will not happen again.

Saw this bad-boy on tap and HAD to have it as the bottle I had before was quite excellent. Served from tap into a Trappe Door tulip. poured red with a three finger very light pink head that subsided to one and a half very slowly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, cherry, and slight sour. The flavor was of sweet malt, cherry, sugar, slight tart, and slight sour. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this brew is nothing short of excellent. Really can't believe I got the opportunity to try this one on tap. It was really just as good as out of the bottle. Everything in this one just WORKS! Nothing at all missing for the style and is likely my favorite brew of the style only compeating with Raspberry Tart. If you haven't had this brew before regardless of the serving type, you need to do so as soon as you possibly can.

Served in a champagne flute, this renowned beer appears remarkably similar to cherry juice. The color is a beautiful, vibrant ruby hue. There is about an inch of head that fades over a few moments.

The smell, which is easily detectable from a few feet away, is reminiscent of cherry pie, with the cherries being predominantly of the sweet variety.

The taste is exactly what the aroma would indicate. Cherry pie, cherry juice, cherry cobbler, cherry soda - you name it. This beer is all about the cherries.

At a mere 4% abv, the alcohol is an afterthought. The feel is pretty good, though the beer is intensely sweet.

Like a great dessert, this is best enjoyed in small quantities. After about 4 ounces, I have had my fill and the beer begins to become cloying.

Appearance: Ruby red, clear but hazy. The off-white head has a slight pinkish hue to it. Very good retention for a fruit beer.

Smell: Cherries abound, sweet and ripe. A hint of brown sugar and spice.

Taste & mouthfeel: Sweet and juicy, the cherries really take over this beer; it's like liquid cherry pie. Low acidity and very mild sourness. The malt backbone is soft, barely noticeable to my palate. Full-bodied yet spritzy. A clean finish without much residual sweetness makes this a lot more drinkable than most sweet beers, but the sweetness does still become taxing after a while. One glass is plenty, but it's one highly enjoyable glass.

Pours a light pink to reddish color with a small white head. In the aroma small sour cherries. In the taste, cherry, very cherry with a small sourness lingering behind. A smooth medium body mouthfeel and a dry cherry aftertaste. Cherries feel a bit medicinal, kind of like cough drops. A small tartness, and big in cherry.

Bottle poured into a tulip.

A: Pours a deep hazy reddish brown with a small, dense pinkish head that dissipates fairly quickly, leaving little lacing.

S: Holy Moses, this stuff smells spectacular. Obviously, a lot of cherries in the nose, but not intensely tart. It's like someone dumped some ripe cherry juice into the beer with a heavy sweetness that balances the tartness out. There was a hint of the wheat, some molasses and cinnamon.

T: The taste is fantastic as well and a tad more tart than the smell. Again, a touch of grains in the finish along with a hint of oak, but not a lot is getting through the cherries in there. That's a compliment for this beer.

M: Mouthfeel is creamy, smooth and highly carbonated.

D: Drinkability isn't as high as it could be because of the heavy sweetness, but that's really nitpicking. I am not the biggest fan of fruit beers, but this is, without a doubt, the best one I have ever tasted.

No bubbles and hardly any no head. But the color is just a dark, cherry red. Reminds me of fruit punch and wine mixed together. The aroma is almost a buttery cherry aroma. Very unique, and still pretty funky. The taste is a medium tart cherry juice. A little odd creaminess somewhere upfront, but very quickly fades. Strong, funky cherry flavors hit the mddle hard along with a slow lasting sweetness.

This was our “brunch beer” before we embarked on our mini-BA San Diego Pub-Crawl last weekend.

Presentation: A 750ml green glass bottle with a colorful label. Xlperro had neatly removed the wax from around the upper neck of the bottle, though it was still possible to tell from the remnants that some had indeed been there, & that it was appropriately red in color. The picture of the cherries on the front label also hinted at what this often talked about beer had to offer the first-timer.

Appearance: Poured with a murky hue, the color is hard to accurately describe, say that it was a fusion of dark reds & medium browns, that continually altered depending on how it was viewed through the Chalice Glass. A light flamingo pink head sprung to life when poured but soon fizzled out to leave a few trace bubbles on the beers surface.

Nose: A deep fresh odor of real cherries that has a tart, almost acidic nose. Dry in character but very fruity, yet not too sweet. You can tell that this is made with real cherries – there are no sweet/sickly/syrup smells here at all. It has a gorgeous fresh fruit smell that I found I constantly had to reacquaint myself with.

Taste: The beginning reminded of how many traditional Krieks start; a tart, sharp pinching acidic cherry punch. This slowly subsides, & lets in the other flavors like spices, malt, & often wood/oak tinges, yet it had a sweetness in the still tart finish. Occasionally an acidic vinuous ‘spike’ would catch you out, just when you thought the tartness had disappeared for good – I enjoyed that.

Mouthfeel: Swirled in the glass it released dissolved carbon dioxide, when you did this in the mouth it danced on the palate. Smooth, nicely carbonated feel that at times felt like you had a mouth full of Dark Skin Cherries mixed with a Cantillon Kriek &and a Rodenbach Classic. However, it did exhibit a slight sweetness after it was swallowed.

Drinkability: The sweetness in the finish is the only distraction in the drinkability in this beer for me personally. At 5.1% ABV, I could easily drink several glasses without much problem, however, the sweetness in the end would eventually make it hard for me to do so I believe.

Overall: An excellent beer that is very difficult to fault. Highly Accomplished.

I drank from a 750ml bottle into a champagne flute.

This fruit beers pours a deep red, almost purple with a light pink head that has a dash of brown in it. The head rises about 2 inchecs and has decent retention, no significant lacing.

The aroma is big and bold with lots of sweetness. It smells totally of cherries, like a nice cherry slushy. There is a hint of cola and smidge of tartness.

The taste is very sweet, once again almost all cherries is what you get. The sweet is very nice, but lightly let down and not rewarded with any sour or tart bite to it. The sweetness is great but makes it hard to drink a lot of it without it being balanced between sweet and tart.

The mouthfeel is light and its very drinkable despite how sweet it is.

Served slightly chilled
A - Deep red like cherry syrup w/ good clarity and a small pink head

S - Lots of ripe cherry juice in the nose w/ subtle sweetness in the aroma

M - Very lively w/ sweetness and a nice tart fresh cherry acidity

T- An incredibly tasty cherry flavor w/ freshly crushed cherry intensity and gentle sweetness like Grandma's tart fresh picked cherry pie. The flavor is fresh w/ enough of a malt foundation to make it clear this is a fruit beer and not a cherry wine cooler. The carbonation is crisp enough to allow the taste to expand across the palate instead of becoming cloying. This is very complex w/ sweet tart and juicy flavors that aren't quit sour or sugary, but quenching and fulfilling all the way.

D - I wouldn't call this the ultimate fruit ale...yet, but it ranks very high. It has so many flavors and doesn't hold back. It tastes fresh, sweet yet is something that can be sipped and savored for hours. New Glarus has really made a fine Cherry beer - I will definitely seek this one out again

as with the raspberry tart, this thing blows away most any fruit beer you could find

appearance: dark pink, cherry read, thin foamy head

smell: very sweet cherries, sugar, cherry pie

taste: an explosion of sweet sugar covered cherry, quite sweet and tart. I think I like this guy a little better than its counterpart, raspberry tart

mouthfeel: carbonated, fizzes on the tongue

Had a bottle for the first time since a couple years ago. I had not been a fan back then (and I was just getting into beer), and I don't really dig fruit beers in general. Things done changed.

Pours a murky ruby-amber with a big, puffy, pink-tan head. It recedes fairly quickly, but never goes away.
Screaming tart cherry aroma. Underlying this is some oaky/woody notes and subtle cinnamon spicing.
Taste, as one would expect, is heavy on the cherries. Initally very sweet, then moves more toward the sour direction. Stays both sweet and tart throughout. Carmelized malt provide a backbone but not much else. Yeast adds a little more sourness and some doughy notes. Touches of cinnamon appear as it warms with some spicy wood accents.
At times, when the tartness and spicy notes hit the back of the throat just right, this can be eye-wateringly intense. A lot of flavor here.
Easily the best fruit beer I've had (along with it sister, Raspberry tart). This will now take the place of champagne. I am glad I revisited it.

This isn't my first sample of this brew. I bought a bottle of it and the Raspberry Tart years ago before I started reviewing and have had samples of both every time I've been to the GABF. Boy am I thrilled to have it again!

Pours from capped and mimimally waxed 750ml bottle a cloudy red with a nice solid, be it small, head of foam with some good lacing.

The smell is of cherrries, cherries, and...more cherries!~ A +lb of cherries in every bottle will do that for you. ;^)

The taste...is of wonderful, semi sweet and sweet cherry. In the background, I can just get some wheat, more pronounced when I swish the beer in my mouth, and a slight woody flavour. Boy, is this a joy to sip on and yeah, it's very low in the abv department but when you get a brew of this caliber, sipping is the *only* way to go. The mouthfeel is almost chewy, nah, I'm going to say that it *is* chewy and the carbonation is very lively.. just the right level for me to make my drinking experience stellar. There's also a small hop presence there to add just a touch of bitterness; not too much, mind you, as the cherry flavour is what Belgian Red is all about.

I just poured some more into my glass and I have a huge smile on my face. Wow. Is this ever a satisfying beer.

Bottom line: This is a world class brew that hits my palate on all cylinders. Like I said before I got this in a trade and it certainly won't be the last time I trade for it. Thank again, Joe!!

Poured into tulip. Poured a pretty red color with an inch of pinkish-tan head that had very good retention and lacing.

The aroma is strongly cherry and not much else. On the tongue the cherry flavor is backed up by a bit of a grain taste.The body was very effervescent and crisp, sweet without being sticky. Drinkability will depend on how you like sweet and fruity brews, I loved it and would lots more if it were available to me.

Had at my parents house in Chicago, they brought it back from Wisconsin. This has been on my must-try list based on a personal recommendation from beer god Boyd, and also it's currently number 30.

I won't detail the appearance, smell, and taste as they are detailed in full by previous reviews. The main thing about it is I hoped it was a Flanders red (sour ale). But it turned out to have a secret ingredient: cherries. It's a cherry lambic... huh.

It's good for it's style but not really my cup of tea.

Joe was kind enough to send me one of these long time wants in the LNBA BIF a while back. Thanks, Joe! I split this with 2 friends last night.

The pour is quite gorgeous, hazy and turbid ruby red with a large, dense off white head with excellent retention and lacing. The nose is pure cherry juice, fresh and refreshing with a delicious blend of tartness and sweetness. Mildly jammy, this is glorious! The palate is similar, with sweet cherries, rich and pure. Mild tartness is present and the acidity and funk are very restrained (almost non-existent) for a beer that's supposed to have wild yeast and bacteria. The finish is a touch disappointing, with the sweetness fizzling out rather rapidly. Medium in body with moderate carbonation, this beer is a treat, but my 8oz were sufficient. I would never turn this down, though.

A wonderful blegian style cherry beer from Wisconsin! This one pours out a bright red colour with a nice, fizzy pink head. The aromas are fresh cherries, and I mean CHERRIES! Pits, pulp, flesh, skin, the whole she-bang. The taste is wonderfully cherry-ish and fruity. It is a tad bit sweet, and it could finish a bit more dry, but it is exceptional the way it is. A true ale or beer base is lacking and this is very much a fruity beer for people who like fruit beers. The mouthfeel is good...a little heavier than most fruit beers or new-style lambics. The drinkability is excellent but the sweetness gets to you after a while so I recommend splitting a 750 with your girlfriend, fiance, wife, etc...like I did.

750 ml wine bottle poured into a Unibroue tulip (the New Glarus wine glasses aren't conducive to reviewing at all). OLD.

A - Pours a dark and clear ruby red color with a dirty light pink foamy head. Alright retention left a bit of lacing as it sank to a nice blanket covering.

S - Despite it's age, the aroma bursts with fresh, real cherries with a very mild barn-yard funk behind.

T - The age shows much more in the flavor as it developed a bit of a sour barn-yard funk with a bit of horse-blanket to the tart, still fresh cherries. A fantastic tasting beer young or old.

M - Crisp carbonation that doesn't demolish your throat which is followed by a funky and tart finish.

D - I think it's just a bit better fresh but the nuances it gains with age definitely are worth aging a bottle of this beauty. Approximate age is about two years based on the retailer's comments.
