500ml Bottle: poured twice into my 'La Chouffe' stemmed tulip on 16 Mar 2013.
Looked special in the glass: rich deep ruby red when held up to the light, on top a full and lasting crown of tanned foam.
Alcohol soaked fruits (plums, raisins, dates) with malty molasses fill the nose when you take a sniff. It's like a drunken fruit cake sort of smell.
Those fruity and sweet malty esters carry on into the taste: the flavours are added too by dark chocolate and caramel notes, we are talking some seriously hefty notes here though.
The body is both rich and somewhat oily in nature: suits the flavours though, too sweet for some, but it really hit my sweet tooth in the right place. Couldn't drink this all night but I'd have managed another if I'd had one. Although the alcohol isn't hidden as much as I'd like, it is a very good example of this style.

50cl bottle poured into my Spaten Seidel. Best before Sept 2011.
A -Extremely dark mahogany ruby body, with 3 finger creamy head that has excellent retention and lacing considering the style. Excellent clarity.
S - Wholemeal breads, a little metallic, some milk chocolate.
T- Fresh wholemeal bread with a little toffee caramel note, some prune fruitiness, balanced nicely with a lingering bitterness, quick clean finish however. Flavours are definitely subdued.Alcohol well hidden.
M- Moderate carbonation and medium body.
D- A great looking, clean tasting dopplebock, but lacks any real depth of character, albeit still very drinkable.
