Compared to the regular Maisel Weisse this is a bit of a letdown. The mouthfeel is fairly thin and the flavours are more subdued than I expected. Not a bad dunkel but this brewer is known to be top shelf in wheat beers so a bit of a drop in expectations.

500ml bottle poured into a 22.3oz weizen glass. My first dunkel.
A - Pours with great big light tan head of thick foam. Hazy maple brown body with some amber highlights in it. Not really fantastic head retention and basically no lacing at all. A little underwhelmed.
S - A nice aroma of dark malt and spice, with light fruit notes as well. Light, bready crystal malt, ginger and nutmeg, upfront with some notes of dried plum, flaked wheat, banana, and yeast.
T - Lots of bready malt and yeast, with notes of ripe banana, plums, and a hint of molasses. Brown sugar, caramel malt, and crisp fruitiness. Some spices are present as well, nutmeg and ginger, with some clove. A solid profile for sure, but nothing worth writing home about.
M - Crisp and well carbonated, with a medium body. Finishes a bit dry, and leaves some yeasty residue after a while. Overall, pretty smooth.
D - An all around solid beer, and something I hope to have again. Definitely a step behind Maisel's Weisse Original, but still a tasty and damn drinkable brew.

Appearance: Dark brown body, appears clouded, with a smallish, creamy-looking head with a very, very faint beige tint to it.
Smell: Barely perceived, little sniffs of wheat, darkened malts, fruit. Some aromas crank the dial up to 11, this turned it down below 1.
Taste: Bread crusts, some roast, some nuts but the flavor is incredibly mild. Slight wheat twanginess. Pinch of cocoa. Light banana, raisin. Near nil hop character, bitterness. Thinning (a bit watery, even) on the under-carbonated finish with little hints of dark malt and fruit.
Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium-light carbonation.
Overall: Weak offering. I'd rather have their standard weisse, as this just had sooo little going on that it was instantly forgettable.

Comes out of the tap a dark, nearly opaque chocolaty brown with a fine-bubbled light tan head. Tempting malty aroma has hints of chocolate and caramel. Flavor - such flavor! Malty mainly, plus caramel, horehound, earthy and yeasty notes. Texture is fairly smooth with a sharp yeasty undertone and hints of fruit, not a lot of fizz. Definitely worthy of at least a sample.

500ml bottle into weizen glass
A: Pours a murky brown with a 3 finger off white head. Decent lacing and good carbonation.
S: Typical Hefe smells (banana, citrus fruits), much more malt than a normal Hefe, grassy floral scents too. Maybe a slight hint of toffee or chocolate when swirled.
T: Once again typical hefe tastes but with much more malt, and a hint of toffee on the tongue. Sweet.
M: Quite think unfortunately, definitely light-bodied. Slightly fizzy on the tongue.
Overall: A fairly ok beer. My only REAL problem was the mouthfeel which was very weak. As for everything else, it was ok but nothing spectacular. It has whetted my appetite for more dunkels though.

A- I agree...this looks like a world class Dunkel! Pours with an absolutely amazingly thick tan colored head, that starts out about four inches thick and slowly settles into about a two finger thick puff of cloud! The color of the beer is reddish brown, is mainly clear and appears to have brilliantly fine carbonation rising up in fine looking columns. The only knock on this one is the lack of lacing....there really isn't any, and for that, I cannot give this area a perfect score....
S- A rich blend of malt and spice fills up my nostrils....primarily cloves, hints of nutmeg, milk chocolate, and some fruity esters consisting of ripe banana and a touch of various citrus. The malts give off some sweet & sour notes, but refreshing nonetheless.
T- The flavors really sweeten up here, as the malt profile takes over! There are notes of molasses, toffee, chocolate immediately upfront, with tangy hints of fruit from the wheat malt in the background. There is a slight bitterness on the finish but is very mild and doesn't really add much of anything.
M- The carbonation is, as I thought, finely tuned within the liquid, and along with the head, provides a smooth creamy feel on the palate. With this said, the body is actually quite thin but this doesn't hinder the overall feel I have to say. I guess for the style, this should be expected.
O- This is a fine beer, and this might be the one to get me really into Dunkels! It's definitely easy enough to drink, and the flavor, along with the mouthfeel, gives this enough character to make me want to have more than one of these in a sitting. This beer would go well with a roast beef dinner or perhaps with a chocolate cake for dessert. Thumbs up!

510ml bottle poured into pint glass 23/1/12
A murky brownish cola with a thumbs width of light tan head that leaves some random lace, not quite the booming foam I expect from the style but retention is pretty good
S some banana bread and clove, some fruit I can't place and just a little chocolate milk
T not quite as strong as the smell but the flavors are similar to the nose, cereal's are a little easier too notice then the smell
M nearly turns too foam but all the little bubbles give it a creamy feel, faint coffee aftertaste
O pretty straight forward but respectable brew nonetheless
not up there with the better examples of the style but still nothing too be ashamed of

Certainly looks like a world class Dunkwsisse. Dark cola brown, very murky, with and amazing off-white head and gobs of lacing.
Aroma isn't as robust as the looks are as All I wiffed was faint banana, some light roast malt, and a fairly noticeable iron water smell.
Taste is so-so. Again there's potential, but nothing jumps out and the mineral water AND an overall watery feel make this an average offering in the Dunkel Department

500ml bottle, best before Aug 2012, and a new arrival in the province of Alberta. Cracked to the tune of the WJHC bristling in the background.
This beer pours a hazy dark golden brown hue, with a teeming column of tight fizzy, quickly melding into creamy, ecru head. As it slowly slips away, a low sudsy wall of lace remains for a spell, before dissolving in a similar fate.
The aroma is coy at first pass, but with a bit of warming, opens up with some nice dark fruit esters, juicy caramel malt, edgy toasted wheatiness, and some mild mocha notes, with a dry earthiness holding up the hop flag. These aspects follow closely in the flavour, with the malt leaning a tad closer to the wheat than the caramel, and the fruity chocolate hanging tough. A wee bit of clove and yeastiness work their way in as well.
Bubbles are not a huge concern here, and manifest in but a slight tingle. From the first sip, the body is evidently smooth, clean, and a pleasant medium weight. It finishes off-dry, the wheat still toasty, and softly caramelized, some dry yeast and earthy hops rounding things off with aplomb.
A deftly easy to drink dark wheat beer, enjoyably straight forward, but hardly plain. The expected yeast and spice are notably understated, and that's ok, as everything else is quite agreeable. I could very much see ordering this a few times over in any rustic Germanic pub whose doorway I might darken.
