Thanks, Ed. Poured side by side with the Ruination 10th anniversary, and it really highlighted how much variety can exist in a style.
Pours a clear reddish amber, about a finger of head that dissipates slowly.
Smell is nice, some citrus from the hops and a bit of a biscuity kind of malt backing. A bit sweeter than I expected.
This is definitely a more malt-heavy DIPA than I'm used to. Some bready, caramel kind of sweetness balances out the hops, which come through flavor, but don't really impart much of the bitterness I expect from the style, especially side by side with the ruination. Hop profile is a bit more earthy and piney than it is citrus, which is nice. Really well balanced, much more drinkable than the ruination, but not as complex or interesting.
Mouthfeel was pretty thick, a little too creamy for my taste, but certainly not bad. Good carbonation keeps it from getting too heavy.
Overall, a nice offering from schlafly. Not as good as the AIPA, but definitely respectable. I'll be wanting to get more of this soon.
